Idaho 3, Arkansas Pine-Bluff 0
BOISE - Senior team captain Sari Morrison headed in the game-winner and freshman Chelsea Small scored a pair of unassisted goals as Idaho rebounded on Sunday with a solid team effort in a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Holiday Inn Classic on Sunday at Boise, Idaho.
The Vandals held a distinct advantage on offense, as Idaho (4-3) pelted the UAPB (2-3-2) keepers all afternoon to the tune of 29 shots, including 14 on goal, while allowing just a single shot on a breakaway midway through the second half.
Idaho head coach Pete Showler said that the team brought "good energy" to Sunday's game after its 1-0 loss on Friday to Northern Colorado.
"We won 3-0 and kept a clean sheet, which is fantastic, but I think we could have had a couple extra goals," Showler said. "I'm very happy with a win, but I've got to keep demanding more of these girls, because that's the only way they're going to continue getting better."
Idaho's early aggressive play payed dividends. Layton's corner kick at the 16:52 mark perfectly found Morrison's head and gave UAPB keeper Chelsea Klein no chance. Small added some insurance just 7 minutes later when she dribbled into the Pine Bluff zone, juked her defender, and fired a shot to the far post from 17 yards out. Minutes later, she made it a trifecta for the Vandal women, as she again juked a defender and beat the keeper to put Idaho up 3-0 at the 39:18 mark.
Idaho's defense was top-notch on Sunday, as the back line limited the Lions to just one shot and neutralized most UAPB possessions before they even began. Idaho, on the other hand, moved the ball effectively and took the ball deep into the Pine Bluff zone repeatedly.
"We worked together really well today and did a good job of getting numbers in the box," Small, who tallied her first career multi-goal game on 11 shots, said.
Showler was also happy with his team's work on the offense, but at the same time, he said he wanted to see a little more consistency in connecting on the crossing passes.
"I think we did a good job of getting in behind them, getting numbers in the box and getting some width," Showler said. "We got good numbers in the box sometimes today, and now the challenge is for us to get the numbers there all the time."
For the game, Idaho outshot UAPB by a 29-1 margin, including 14-1 on shots on goal. The Vandals earned nine corner kicks, including six in the first half, while Pine Bluff had just two. Idaho committed 10 fouls, while UAPB had nine, including one yellow card.
Idaho will return to the Palouse next weekend after playing back-to-back tournaments in Boise. The Vandals will host Eastern Washington on Friday at Guy Wicks Field before making a quick trip up to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga on Sunday.
Utah State 5, Houston Baptist 1
HOUSTON - With an offensive explosion of five goals, the Utah State soccer team won the program's 100th win with a 5-1 triumph over Houston Baptist Sunday in Houston. The Aggies captured the 100th win in their 14th season.
"It is very exciting to get the 100th win," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "I am excited for Utah State soccer alumni and our current players. Everyone who has ever put on an Aggie soccer jersey has contributed to us earning this milestone."
With the win, Utah State also broke a three-match winless streak and scored the most goals since a 10-1 win against Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech on Nov. 3, 2007. Sunday was the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and the Huskies. USU improves to 4-2-1 with the win, while HBU falls to 1-3-1.
"It was a good win because we had a bit of a shaky performance on Friday," Cairns said. "It was great to bounce back and get this one on the road. When you are on the road, it is a tough environment. So, I am really proud of the girls."
The Aggies took the early lead in the sixth minute off a penalty kick off the foot of sophomore Shantel Flanary. Junior Heather Pond was taken down in the box by a Husky to lead to the penalty kick. The goal was Flanary's third of the season.
Flanary was also involved in the second goal which was scored in the 10th minute. Flanary crossed the ball to freshman midfielder Ellen Larsen who knocked in her first collegiate goal. The assist was the second of the season for Flanary.
The half would end with Utah State holding a 2-0 advantage over the Huskies. The two goals were more than the Aggies had scored in their prior three matches combined.
USU came out strong in the second half, scoring less than two minutes into the period. Once again, Flanary was in on the action, scoring her fourth goal of the season. Her second goal of the match was scored unassisted from 30 yards out, shot across the box into top corner of the net to give Utah State the 3-0 lead.
In the 69th minute, the Huskies trimmed the lead to 3-1 off of a goal from Isla Cameron, as like Flanary, she also scored a deep goal from 25-yards unassisted, getting the ball passed USU junior goalkeeper Aleena Shelton. The Aggie goalkeepers split time as sophomore Molli Merrill started the first half and Shelton played the second period.
Utah State re-claimed the three-goal lead in the 84th minute when sophomore forward Danielle Shorts scored her first collegiate goal of her career. Utah State tallied its final goal in the 86th minute. Junior midfielder Stefani Shiozaki scored her second goal in three matches. Shiozaki knocked in an unassisted goal to take the 5-1 lead.
Next week, the Aggies head to the home state of junior forward Lauren Hansen. USU takes on Washington on Friday, Sept. 18 before facing Seattle University on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Boise State placed four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes with Shannon Saxton (17th), Chelsea Robinson (20th) and Cheyenne Jones (29th) all being denied. Boise State opened the second half with freshman Erica Parks taking a shot 20 seconds into the period only to see a defender block it.
In the 50th minute Jones fired from 15 yards out only to have her second on target shot denied by Salminen. However, the rebound fell back to Jones who volleyed it back at goal when it hit the right post and deflected out of trouble.
Kaylea Perenon nearly gave the Broncos the lead in the 76ht minute when she cranked a shot from distance on the left flank only to see Salminen stretch for the save touching the strike off the cross bar on out of bounds.

The draw gives Boise State a 4-3-1 overall mark on the season. Next up for the Broncos is the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational this coming weekend in Boise when they play North Dakota State University on Friday and the University of Wyoming Sunday. Northern Colorado moves to 3-2-1 on the year with the draw.

Washington, D.C. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team (2-4) completed a perfect weekend on the East Coast by pummeling Howard University, 8-0, at Greene Stadium on Sunday afternoon, September 13.
The result matched program records both for goals in a single game, and margin of victory. San Jose State, now 2-4, out-scored Lafayette and Howard, 12-1, over its first two victories of 2009 on Friday afternoon, September 11, and today. Howard remains winless at 0-5-1.

Louisiana Tech 12, Delta State 0
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech continued its impressive early season play Sunday when the Lady Techsters scored a school record 12 goals in a 12-0 victory over an injury-plagued Delta State team at Joe Aillet Stadium.
The previous school record was eight goals in a game, accomplished on five separate occasions in Lady Techster soccer history.
Tech (7-0), which is one of only 16 undefeated teams in the country, also extended its program record winning streak to seven games and has now outscored its opponents 40-4 on the year.
"Delta state had a lot of injuries coming into the game," said Tech head coach Kevin Sherry. "Give them credit to keep on going to their end. We still had to take advantage of it, and we did. The team played well. They worked hard together. What impressed me the most is they are working hard on what we have been working on in practice. They say to practice like you play, and play like you practice. We did that today."
On the afternoon, Tech recorded a school record 52 shots, including 32 shots on goal, while Delta State managed only two shots in the contest.
In wet and raining conditions, the Lady Techsters took an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on an unassisted goal by Abigail Edwards, her first of the season, on a play that saw the wet ball go right through the hands of Delta State goalkeeper Samantha LeJeune. Just two minutes later, Mo Rockwell scored her third goal of the assistant off a nice assist by Kat McCullough, giving Tech a 2-0 lead only seven minutes into the game.
Rockwell returned the favor in the 21st minute of the first half as she assisted McCullough on her first goal of the season as the lead increased to 3-0. Rockwell then recorded her second assist of the game on a goal by Rachel King in the 32nd minute.
Heather Fitzgerald scored her third goal of the year in the 35th minute before King added her second goal of the game - and school record tying ninth goal of the season - in the 40th minute to give the Lady Techsters a 6-0 halftime lead.
Sherry pulled the majority of his starters in the second half as the LA Tech bench came on just as strong, matching the first half with six second half goals.
"Out of respect for Delta State, we took our starting 11 off and put everyone else in the game," Sherry said. "There is no difference between our starters and our bench. When your opportunity comes, you need to take it. We share the load. Everyone did their part today. The ones who didn't do as much today will be expected to carry the load Tuesday."
Scotti Culton started the second half scoring for the Lady Techsters as she scored from 10 yards out on the left side on a nice cross from Taylor Meyers in the 55th minute of the game. Brittany Coffinbargar then scored the first of her three second-half goals in the 63rd minute as she was the recipient of a nice give-and-go play with teammate Sarah Klenke and the Lady Techsters led 8-0.
Coffinbargar would add goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes, her first three goals of the season.
"I was really happy for Brittany," Sherry said. "She has been working hard in practice and it was nice to see her get the three goals today. It's good for her development."
Kiva Gresham added a goal in the 71st minute and Fitzgerald added her second goal of the day in the 86th minute.
The Lady Techsters will be in action Tuesday as they host Grambling State in a makeup game at 2 p.m. at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
Fresno State 2, Cal State Bakersfield 0
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team found the back of the net not once, but twice against CSU Bakersfield. The Bulldogs scored two unanswered goals to beat the Roadrunners, 2-0, on Sunday night. The `Dogs brought home the second annual Valley Cup with their first win of the season. Fresno State improves to 1-5 on the season.
"It is an absolute relief to not only score, but have the team play quite well in all facets," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We remained organized and didn't give anything away. This was a long time coming. It could have and should have happened a few games ago. The team recognized that if they stick to the game plan we can get the result we want."
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the 28th minute of the first half. Junior Claudia Cardenas scored the Bulldogs first goal of the season. Cardenas took a shot on the goalkeeper from about 18-yards out. Molly Nizzoli set Cardenas up with a deflected shot and earned the assist.
"It feels great to finally put the ball in the back of the net and get a goal," said Cardenas. "Scoring two goals was huge for our team and I hope the momentum carries over to the next weekend and the rest of the season."
Not even 10 minutes later the `Dogs struck again with another goal extending their lead, 2-0.
Rachel Pickett sent a through ball to Callie Hancock who had only the goalkeeper to beat and resulted in Fresno State's second goal of the season. Pickett earned the assist on the play.
Hancock continues to lead the team in shots this season with 12.
The Bulldogs outshot the Roadrunners, 17-6, with 10 shots on goal. Hancock led the team with four shots in the match.
Junior Kaitlyn Revel recorded her first shutout of the season and has 21 career shutouts. She needs one more to tie for second place in Fresno State history. She also had three saves against the `Runners and has 38 saves on the year.
The Valley Cup will stay in Fresno until the two teams meet again in 2010.
"It is a really neat tradition," said Zwaschka. "The fact that last year in the inaugural year it went to CSU Bakersfield and in my first year we brought it back to Fresno is exciting. We will do our best next year to defend it."
The Bulldogs hit the road next weekend to play Pacific on Friday and UC Davis on Sunday.
