Boise State Broncos (4-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Boise State hosted the Holiday Inn Classic going 1-0-1 and tying for the tournament title with a 4-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and a 0-0 draw with Northern Colorado ... BSU enters this week with a 4-3-1 overall mark and will host its third consecutive regular season tournament, the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational ... BSU will host North Dakota State on Friday and Wyoming on Sunday ... last weekend Jayne Murray led Boise State with two goals against UAPB on her way to tournament MVP honors ... on the year, junior Shannon Saxton Leads the Broncos in scoring with four goals and one assist, freshman Erica Parks is second with three goals and two assists.
Fresno State Bulldogs (1-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs won the second annual Valley Cup after beating CSU Bakersfield, 2-0 last week ... Claudia Cardenas scored the first goal of the season for the ‘Dogs. Not even 10 minutes later freshman Callie Hancock found the back of the net for the second time in the game ... the Bulldogs outshot CSUB, 17-6 with 10 shots on goal ... Kaitlyn Revel and the defense recorded their first shutout in the 2009 season ... the Bulldogs hit the road next weekend to face Pacific on Friday and UC Davis on Sunday.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (1-4-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 0-1-0 last week, falling 2-0 at Pepperdeine ... the Rainbow Wahine gave up both goals to Pepperdine in the first period of play ... Vanessa Bailey led Hawai‘i with two shots in the match, while Chelsey Goo and Chelsea Deptula each had one ... this week, Hawai‘i continues road play at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Cal State Northridge on Friday and Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
Idaho Vandals (4-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Vandals went 1-1-0 last week, dropping a 1-0 decision to Northern Colorado before defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 at the Holiday Inn Classic in Boise, Idaho ... Clelsea Small had a great week, as she notched her first career multi-goal game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and fired off 14 shots over the weekend, six of which were on the mark ... defensively, Sari Morrison was at the top of her game for the second straight weekend, as the team captain center back led a Vandal defense that allowed just one goal over the weekend ... this week, Idaho hosts Eastern Washington on Friday before traveling to play Gonzaga on Sunday.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (7-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech kept its perfect record alive with a pair of wins last week over Centenary (7-1) and Delta State (12-0) ... the Lady Techsters scored 19 goals and now front the nation with 40 goals ... Britt Coffinbargar led the team this past week with three scored goals ... Coffinbargar also had a a pair of assists ... Rachel King, Heather Fitzgerald, Olivia Lukasewich and Mo Rockwell each scored two goals over the two matches ... this week, LA Tech hosts Grambling on Tuesday and then travels to Mississippi Valley State on Friday before the team hosts UALR on Sunday.
Nevada Wolf Pack (2-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevada recorded its first back-to-back wins since Sept. 28 and 30 of 2007… junior Jill Erickson leads the team with two goals this season … Nevada recorded a season-high 10 shots in the team’s win over Fordham … junior transfer Kesia Broome recorded two assists on the weekend, including one game-winning assist ... this week, Nevada will travel to play in the Minnesota Gold Classic where it will take on Minnesota and North Dakota.
New Mexico State Aggies (2-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The New Mexico State soccer team concluded its four-match road stint with a tough 3-1 loss at Northern Arizona, Sept. 12, in Flagstaff, Ariz. ... freshman midfielder Kelly Heiman scored her first career goal for the Aggies ... she tied the match at 1-1 with a header on a pass from junior midfielder Baili Foutz ... the assist was a career first for Foutz at NM State ... freshman forward Vanessa Thomas paced the Aggies with a career-high three shots while junior defender Nina Yanes provided two ... defensively, senior goalkeeper Katie Graul posted a match-high seven saves.
San Jose State Spartans (2-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
After scoring one goal over its first four matches, all losses, San Jose State found the back of the net 12 times in a pair of wins on the East Coast over the weekend … the Spartans’ 8-0 triumph at Howard matched program records for goals in a game, and margin of victory … in that game, Emmy Belding produced the eighth hat trick in program history, while fellow senior forward Roxy Kamal assisted on the first three goals, before scoring once herself … having concluded a season-long four-game road stretch at an even 2-2, the Spartans, now 2-4 on the year, return home to face a final one-game week for 2009 … SJSU hosts UC Davis on Friday night, September 18.
Utah State State Aggies (4-2-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State won its 100th match as a program in a demonstrative 5-1 win over Houston Baptist in Houston on Sept. 13 ... the win also stopped a three-match winless streak for the Aggies ... next week, the Aggies head to the home state of junior forward Lauren Hansen ... USU takes on Washington on Friday, Sept. 18 before facing Seattle University on Sunday, Sept. 20 ... sophomore Shantel Flanary leads the Aggies in points scored with 10 ... she is just two points shy of her total point total of 2008 ... junior Stefani Shiozaki now has two goals this season after registering only one point on an assist in her first two seasons.
WAC NOTES
SAN JOSE STATE’S KAMAL NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Jose State’s Roxy Kamal has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 7-13.
Kamal, a senior forward from San Jose, Calif. (Presentation HS), recorded two goals and three assists for seven points in a pair of San Jose State road wins over Lafayette and Howard last week. Kamal opened the scoring in a 4-1 victory over Lafayette, tallying her first goal of the season and third of her career. Kamal assisted on each of the first three goals and scored in the 69th minute to help the Spartans to an 8-0 win over Howard. It was the first three-assist performance by a Spartan this decade, and the first multiple-assist effort by a SJSU player since 2006.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State sophomore midfielder Jayne Murray; Fresno State junior Claudia Cardenas; Idaho freshman forward Chelsea Small; Louisiana Tech sophomore forward Rachel King; Nevada junior midfielder Jill Erickson; and Utah State sophomore forward Shantel Flanary.
NEVADA’S MORENO NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nevada’s Dana Moreno have been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 7-13.
Moreno, a freshman goalkeeper from Chatsworth, Calif. (Chatsworth HS), registered two shutouts in a pair of Nevada wins over Fordham and Sacramento State. Moreno made her first career start against Fordham and recorded her first career shutout in the Pack’s 1-0 win. With the shutout, Moreno became the second goalie in program history to record a shutout victory in her first career start. Moreno then recorded her second career shutout in Nevada’s 2-0 victory over Sacramento State, helping the Wolf Pack to its first back-to-back wins since Sept. 30, 2007. Moreno also collected seven saves over the two matches.
Other defensive nominees included: Boise State senior goalkeeper Jen Burns; Fresno State sophomore midfielder Molly Nizzoli; Idaho senior defender Sari Morrison; Louisiana Tech sophomore defender Chelsea White; San Jose State junior goalkeeper Nina Butera; and Utah State senior midfielder/defender Lindsey Smart.
WEEK FOUR HIGHLIGHTS
The WAC registered 10 wins this past week, the most victories in a single week this season for the conference. Louisiana Tech kept its perfect record in tact by defeating both Centenary (7-1) and Delta State (12-0). The Lady Techsters lead the nation in goals with 40 (5.71 per match). San Jose State also picked up a pair of wins last week with a 4-1 win over Lafayette and a 8-0 victory over Howard, both on the road. SJSU’s Roxy Kamal registered seven points over the two matches. Nevada also won both of its matches last week, defeating Fordham (1-0) and Sacramento State (2-0). Nevada’s Dana Moreno registered both shutouts in goal for the Pack. Fresno State won its only game of the week, taking down Cal State Bakersfield 2-0 to claim the annual “Valley Cup.” Utah State won its 100th match as a program with a 5-1 victory on the road over Houston Baptist.
SOCCER FORMAT
The WAC will continue its regular-season play as a single round-robin format for a total of eight conference matches. The points system is as follows: each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The six teams with the most points at the end of the regular season will advance to the WAC Tournament which is being held Nov. 5-6 and 8 in Boise, Idaho.
