TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Boise State Broncos
The Boise State men repeat as team champions this season in the second annual Roger Curran Invitational ... the men’s team scored a near-perfect team score of 18 points finishing in places 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 ... the next closest team score was the College of Idaho with 51 points ... on the women’s side, he Broncos finished in second place by only six points, scoring 52 team points ... the College of Idaho won the women’s race with 46 team points ... BSU’s women scoring runners finished in first through 17th place ... BSU’s Kevin Higgs and Shannon Porter swept this week’s WAC Athlete of the Week honors.
Fresno State Bulldogs
For the second week in a row, the Bulldog newcomers came through for the men’s team ... the team’s three freshman and one transfer finished among the team’s top six, as freshman Danny Vartanian stepped up to fill in the No. 2 spot for Fresno State ... Vartanian timed a 25:48.60 in his first-ever 8K race, taking 21st overall and 15th among collegiate competitors ... the upperclassmen leadership of Garcia and Frank Sanders turned in good races as well, finishing in first and third for the team ... all five Bulldog scorers finished among the Top 50 overall competitors, staying easily within the top quarter of the 214 competitors.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine
Hawai‘i did not compete this past week ... the team is now preparing for its meet on Saturday at the Big Wave Invitational in Kane’ohe, O’ahu.
Idaho Vandals
Idaho had last week off ... the team is gearing up for this week’s meet at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Tech went 3-0 in the Mook Four Triple Dual Meet at Lincoln Parish Park ... Tech would top all three dual teams and were led by sophomore Josh Slocum who finished seventh overall with a time of 21:52 ... finishing right behind Slocum in eighth was Jack Ramstad with a time of 21:53 ... on the women’s side the Techsters would finish the triple dual 0-3 ... leading the Techsters on the two mile course was Chelseas Dressle who finished 28th out of 57 with a time of 13:44 ... LA Tech will retun to action Sept. 19 when they travel to Starkville, Miss. for the Mississippi State Invitational while the Techsters will travel Natchitoches, La. for the Northwestern State Invite.
Nevada Wolf Pack
Nevada did not compete last week ... the team continues to prepare for the Stanford Invitational, which will be held on Sept. 26 in Palo Alto, Calif.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggie men finished just behind Utep in second place on Thursday at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational ... freshman Ryan Fenton finished in front for the Aggie men for the second week in a row with a time of 21:12.2, good for fifth place overall ... Robert Selph, also a freshman, finished just behind Fenton in seventh ... a group of Aggies rounded out the top-15 by filling in 11th through 15th place. Nine Aggies clocked a better time than the top Aggie finisher at last year’s race.
San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State took last week off ... the team will next participate in the UC Riverside Invitational this Saturday in Riverside, Calif.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State’s men and women did not compete last week ... the Aggies will next compete in the Montana State Open in Bozeman, Montana on Saturday.
WAC NOTES
BOISE STATE’S HIGGS AND PORTER NAMED CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boise State’s Kevin Higgs and Shannon Porter have been named the Western Athletic Conference men and women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 7-13.
Higgs, a junior from Nampa, Idaho (Nampa HS), crossed the line in first place to help the Broncos to the team title at the Roger Curran Invitational in Nampa, Idaho last week. Higgs took the top spot in a field of 71 runners in the 6-kilometer with a time of 18 minutes, 41.23 seconds. The first-place finish was the first title of Higgs’ career at Boise State.
Porter, a freshman from Hockinson, Wash. (Hockinson HS), won the women’s individual title at the Roger Curran Invitational last week. Porter broke the tape with a 4-kilometer time of 14:19.20, finishing ahead of 48 other runners.
Other Men’s Nominees: Erick Garcia, Fresno State; Ryan Fenton, New Mexico State.
Other Women’s Nominees: Roxanne Sellick, Fresno State; Courtney Schultz, New Mexico State.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2009 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Reno, Nevada. This year’s championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Rancho San Rafael Park. Utah State swept both the men’s and women’s championships last year.
NCAA REGIONALS
The 2009 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Saturday, Nov. 14. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Eugene, Ore. (University of Oregon). The Mountain Region will be held in Albuquerque, N.M. (University of New Mexico), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.
