Louisiana Tech 1, UALR 0
Ruston, La. - Freshman Mal Feece's header broke a scoreless game in the 77th minute to push Louisiana Tech past UALR 1-0 on Sunday at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
Feece's third goal of the season was assisted by Kat McCullough on a corner kick as the Lady Techsters remain one of the few teams undefeated on the season. Their 10-0 record extends the school record.
"We've been working on getting the ball in the right areas for our girls to attack it," said LA Tech head coach Kevin Sherry. "Kat McCullough hit it perfectly to where we wanted it and Mal did what she is good at which is heading. She is a freshman that has heading power. To get her on the team this season gives us something that we've never had before."
LA Tech took just four shots in the first period, but had 14 in the second. Sophomore goal keeper Cat Buchanan withstood the Trojan's 13 shots - 5 on goal - for her sixth shutout of the season.
Buchanan made a couple of one-on-one saves in the contest that preserved the 0-0 tie, allowing her team to come away with the victory on Fleece's header.
"That was a really tough game," said Sherry. "It was like a game of chess. They (UALR) played to their strengths, hid their weaknesses and defended in numbers. It was a cat-and-mouse game. I think that game will be very similar to what we will play in conference. We could have conceded a goal in the first five minutes and one goal is going to make the difference. Today was our day, but it can go either way."
Tech outshot UALR 18-13, including an 8-5 advantage on shots on goal.
The Lady Techsters take their unblemished record on the road as they face Sam Houston State on Friday at 7 p.m.
Fresno State 1, UC Davis 0
FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Claudia Cardenas scored her third goal in three games as the Fresno State women's soccer team defeated UC Davis, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs earned their second shutout of the year and improved to an overall record of 2-6.
"We played very well this afternoon," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We remained organized and the effort was tremendous. I specifically requested that they work their tails off and they did. We had a good game plan, they stuck to it and the result came along with it. I am very proud of the whole team effort and excited for Claudia to continue her goal scoring streak. She has the finishing touch on team effort."
Both teams entered the half time break scoreless. The Aggies had nine shots and Kaitlyn Revel had five saves in the first half. The Bulldogs recorded three shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
Five minutes into the second half the Bulldogs scored taking a 1-0 lead. Cardenas scored the go ahead goal. She found the back of the net after Callie Hancock took a shot off the goal post. Hancock recorded third assist of the season.

Boise State 1, Wyoming 1 (2OT)
BOISE, Idaho (9/20/09) - Junior Shannon Saxton scored the match-tying goal in the 69th minute as Boise State University battled the University of Wyoming to a 1-1 draw in the final game of the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational in Boise on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos rallied from a 49th minute Wyoming goal to get their third consecutive draw. The tie with the Cowgirls closed a six-match homestand for Boise State who hosted three consecutive home tournaments. The Broncos placed three players, Shannon Saxton, Cheyenne Jones and Adrienne Lommasson, on this weekend’s all-tournament team.
The first half was tight with neither team able to get the ball across the goal line. Boise State’s Jennifer Burns started in goal for the Broncos and made three big saves in the opening 45 minutes denying the Cowgirls Carmen Blume three times in the 25th, 30th and 42nd minutes. Meanwhile, Wyoming’s Courtney Merkle stopped all of Boise State’s shots on goal in the 11th, 16th, 24th and 39th minutes.
Boise State’s Maureen Fitzgerlad placed the first shot on goal in the game in the 11th minute which was denied by Merkle. Kaylea Perenon followed with two hard shots in the 16th and 24th minutes that were also denied. Then in the 39th minute the Broncos Taylor Thompson launched a rocket from distance down the middle that Merkle saved by stretching to touch the ball off the cross bar and over the goal.
In the second half the Wyoming Cowgirls took the lead in the 49th minute when Emily Layton drove into the box and released a shot at goal that was blocked by a defender. The deflection landed directly into Layton’s path who sent a second shot through the defense and inside the far right post for the 1-0 Wyoming advantage. That proved to be the last shot on goal in the match for the Cowgirls who had several chances that either missed just wide or high from that point on.
Boise State out shot Wyoming in the second half, including overtime, 15-to-four overall and nine-to-one in shots on goal. Unfortunately for the home side the Broncos could get only one shot past the Cowgirl defense. The match-tying strike came in the 69th minute from Boise State’s top scorer Shannon Saxton who recorded her fifth goal of the season.
The Broncos pushed the tempo once they found themselves down one. The scoring play began when Boise State’s Maureen Fitzgerald took a shot at goal that was denied with a kick save by Merkle. The attempted clearance went to Saxton who volleyed the scoring strike back at goal from 13 yards out to tying the score at one apiece with a little over 21 minutes remaining in regulation.
After recording the game-tying goal the Broncos picked up their intensity even more. Junior Cheyenne Jones nearly gave the blue and orange the lead in the 71st minute when she fired from distance only to see her shot hit the crossbar and deflect out of danger.
Neither team managed to break the tie in the final minutes of regulation forcing the Broncos into their third consecutive match with overtime.
Wyoming had a chance to end the contest in the first overtime but a shot by Chelsea Coddington sailed just wide left of the goal. Boise State’s Saxton took two shots in the first OT, the first was denied by Merkle while the other rolled just right of the post and over the end line. Perenon also took a chance and sent a shot high of the mark during the period.
The second overtime saw only one shot in the 10 minutes which was a close range header by Boise State’s Chelsea Robinson that sailed directly to the Cowgirl keeper to preserve the draw.
The draw gives Boise State a 4-3-3 overall record and a five-match unbeaten streak, while Wyoming moved to 4-3-2 on the season. Next up for Boise State is a trip to Laramie, Wyo., where the Broncos will participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic this coming weekend where they will play UC Riverside on Friday and Gonzaga on Sunday.
Gonzaga 1, Idaho 0
SPOKANE - Idaho's women's soccer team possessed the ball well at times and played a good defensive game, but one lapse was the difference in a 1-0 loss at Gonzaga on Sunday.
The Idaho (5-4) offense got into the Gonzaga (5-3) zone on many occasions, but the connections just weren't there for the Vandals.
"We can't put performances out there like that," Idaho coach Pete Showler said. "It was two steps forward and one step back.
"We put a good performance in (Friday against Eastern Washington), and then there's a performance after where it's just not good enough."
Idaho was outshot by a 15-11 overall margin, while shots on goal were 7-4 in favor of the Bulldogs. GU managed eight corner kicks to just one from Idaho, but the Vandals did a good job of clearing the corners.
For the Vandal offense, the difference was finishing. In Friday's 4-1 win over Eastern Washington, Idaho connected well in front of the goal, but on Sunday, the passes seemed to go just off or were just a bit far, and the Vandals weren't able to take advantage of its chances in the zone.
"Our touch was off, our passes were short, our clearances weren't on line - we were just off today," Showler said. "We are a better team, but we've got to show it, consistently."
Freshman forward Chelsea Small led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal, while Sari Morrison and Amber Pimley attempted two each. Pimley had a rocket of a shot deflected away by GU's keeper as time expired to end Idaho's comeback hopes.
Idaho will have its first full home stand of the season next weekend, as the Vandals host South Dakota on Friday at 4 p.m., then plays Weber State at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will be at Guy Wicks Field.
"We are 2-0 at home and lets' get it to 4-0, but we've got to step up and be sharp all of the time, and that's the challenge," Showler said.
