TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES


Boise State Broncos (4-3-3, 0-0-0 WAC)
Last weekend Boise State hosted the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational going 0-0-2 recording two 1-1 home draws against the North Dakota State Bison and Wyoming Cowgirl ... the Broncos concluded a six-match homestand against Wyoming and are now 4-3-3 on the season ... BSU currently owns a five-game unbeaten streak including three consecutive draws entering this week ... next up for the Broncos is a road trip to Laramie, Wyo., for the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic where they will play UC Riverside on Friday and Gonzaga on Sunday ... last weekend Cheyenne Jones scored a goal versus NDSU while Shannon Saxton scored the game-tying goal against Wyoming.

Fresno State Bulldogs (2-6-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

The Bulldogs went 1-1 on the road over the weekend ... Fresno State improved to 2-6 after beating UC Davis, 1-0, and losing to Pacific, 3-2 ... Claudia Cardenas scored three goals in the last three games ... Cardenas leads the team in goals (3) and points(6) ... freshman Callie Hancock leads the team in assists with three ... goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel earned her second shutout of the season ... she has 22 career shutouts and needs one more to tie the all-time Fresno State shutout record ... the Bulldogs hit the field again on Sunday, Sept. 27 against Sacramento State.

Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (2-6-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 1-2-0 last week, dropping matches against Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge before picking up a victory over Cal State Bakersfield ... in the win over Cal State Bakersfield, Britta Bourne and Kristyn Shapka scored the goals to help defeate the Roadrunners 2-1 ... on the week, Bourne led the Rainbow Wahine with 16 shots while Mari Punzal was also in double digits with 10 ... Bourne scored the game-winning goal against Cal State Bakersfield ... this week, the Rainbow Wahine return home to host the Ohana Hotels and Resorts Shootout in a two-match set with Detroit-Mercy.

Idaho Vandals (5-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

Idaho’s 5-4 record marks the best start in school history … the four goals Idaho scored against EWU are the most in a single-game during Pete Showler’s tenure … the win over EWU broke a five-game losing streak against the Eagles in which every loss had been by a single goal … Sari Morrison’s PK goal against EWU was her team-leading fifth of the year … Chelsea Small’s goal and assist on Friday gave her 10 points on the year, which rank second on the team … Through nine games this season, Idaho has scored 13 goals. In 19 games last season, the Vandals scored nine times.

LA Tech Lady Techsters (10-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

Louisiana Tech is off to its best start in the program’s history at a record of 10-0-0 … the Lady Techsters are outscoring opponents 47-5 … Tech is one of a few programs with an unblemished record this season …  last week, Kat McCullough received WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after tallying seven points with three goals and an assist ... Rachel King scored two goals, while Mo Rockwell and Mal Feece each put one in the back of the net to help LA Tech outscore its opponents 7-1 last week ... the Lady Techsters will play at Sam Houston State on Friday before returning home to face Houston Baptist on Sunday this week.

Nevada Wolf Pack (3-6-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevada took a season high 23 shots against North Dakota including 13 on goal last week … Kesia Broome and Natalie Ratnavira each recorded a career-high six shots in the match … Jill Erickson tied the program record for consecutive matches with a goal (3) as she scored against Fordham, Sacramento State and against Minnesota … Sarah Voss and Annabelle Allen each recorded their first career goals for Nevada against North Dakota … keeper Dana Moreno made a career-high nine saves against Minnesota ... this week, Nevada travels to play Saint Mary’s on Thursday before playing at UC Davis on Sunday.

New Mexico State Aggies (3-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
New Mexico State won its first home match in program history with a 3-0 decision over Texas-Permian Basin, Sept. 16 at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, N.M. ... despite the windy conditions, the Aggies recorded their first shutout and tied a season high with three goals ... freshman midfielder Veronica Subu scored her first career goal ... freshman midfielder Jazmin Cardoso and freshman forward Crystal Burns provided goals in the Aggie victory ... Burns now leads the team with three goals this season ... this week, NM State dropped a 2-0 decision to West Texas A&M on Monday ... the team will now travel to play Lamar on Friday.

San Jose State Spartans (3-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

With its 1-0 double-overtime home triumph over UC Davis in its only match last week, San Jose State is on its first three-match win streak since 2005 … the game was the Spartans’ first overtime result of 2009, and second straight shutout … Emmy Belding tallied her fourth goal in her last two matches, including both game-winners … Nina Butera’s scoreless streak in the Spartan goal is now at 210:47 … San Jose State concludes a season-long three-match homestand against Notre Dame de Namur and Air Force next week, heading into the start of the league slate on October 2.

Utah State State Aggies (4-4-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State went 0-2-0 last week on the road, dropping a 2-0 decision at Washington before falling 3-1 at Seattle ... Lauren Hansen recorded Utah State’s lone score of the week ... Stefani Shiozaki was credited with the assist on the goal ... Hansen also led the Aggies with four shots on the week ... the Aggies look to get back on track this week against in-state rivals Utah and Brigham Young ... Utah State will face Utah on a neutral field at Real Salt Lake’s Rio Tinto Stadium.


WAC NOTES


LOUISIANA TECH’s MCCULLOUGH NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Louisiana Tech’s Kat McCullough has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 14-20.

McCullough, a graduate midfielder from Coppell, Texas (Coppell HS), scored two goals in a 4-1 win at Mississippi Valley State and recorded the game-winning assist in a 1-0 win against UALR. McCullough had two shots on goal, two goals scored, and one assist for five points over the two matches. With its two wins, Louisiana Tech is off to its best start in program history at 10-0-0.

Other offensive nominees included: Boise State junior forward Shannon Saxton; Fresno State junior forward Claudia Cardenas; Hawai‘i senior forward Britta Bourne; Idaho freshman midfielder/forward Erica Hart; Nevada sophomore midfielder Natalie Ratnavira; New Mexico State freshman forward Crystal Burns; and San Jose State senior forward Emmy Belding.

SAN JOSE STATE’S BUTERA NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Jose State’s Nina Butera has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 14-20.

Butera, a junior goalkeeper from San Jose, Calif. (Presentation HS), earned her third straight victory and first individual shutout of the season in goal last week in helping the Spartans to a 1-0 double-overtime win at home over UC Davis. Butera played all 100:34 and equaled her single-game season high with seven saves. Butera faced 18 shots without giving up a goal and now has a scoreless streak of 210:47. Friday’s shutout was the sixth of Butera’s career, the third-most in the SJSU record book. 

Other defensive nominees included: Boise State senior goalkeeper Jen Burns; Fresno State sophomore defender Kendall VanDine; Hawai‘i senior defender Kristyn Shapka; Idaho senior defender Sari Morrison; Louisiana Tech sophomore goalkeeper Cat Buchanan; Nevada freshman goalkeeper Dana Moreno; and New Mexico State freshman defender Elise Nordin.

WEEK FOUR HIGHLIGHTS
The WAC registered nine wins this past week. Louisiana Tech set a new school record for best record to start the season. The Lady Techsters are now 10-0-0 after defeating Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State and UALR last week. Louisiana Tech continues to lead the nation in goals at 47 (4.70 per match). Boise State continues to play overtime games at it tied both its matches last week against North Dakota State and Wyoming. The Broncos have now tied their last three matches. New Mexico State defeated Texas-Permian Basin. San Jose State defeated UC Davis in double-overtime last week. Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawai‘i all split matches last week. Idaho’s 5-4 record to start the season is the best start in the program’s history

SOCCER FORMAT
The WAC will continue its regular-season play as a single round-robin format for a total of eight conference matches. The points system is as follows:  each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The six teams with the most points at the end of the regular season will advance to the WAC Tournament which is being held Nov. 5-6 and 8 in Boise, Idaho.

2009 NCAA COLLEGE CUP
The 28th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held December 4 and 6, 2009 in College Station, Texas at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Fresno State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2009 NCAA Tournament:
