Boise State Broncos (5-3-4, 0-0-0 WAC)
Last weekend Boise State won the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic with a 1-0-1 record ... the Broncos tied UC Riverside 0-0 on Friday then defeated Gonzaga 1-0 Sunday to conclude their non-conference schedule with a 5-3-4 overall record ... the victory over Gonzaga ended a streak of four-straight draws ... Boise State currently owns a seven-match unbeaten streak consisting of three victories sandwiched around the four draws ... next up for the Broncos is the conference opener on the road this weekend at New Mexico State Friday followed by a Sunday afternoon encounter at undefeated Louisiana Tech. Last weekend Cat Leewaye scored the game-winner versus Gonzaga.
Fresno State Bulldogs (2-7-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs went 0-1 this weekend losing a tough battle against Sacramento State, 2-0 ... Kaitlyn Revel recorded three saves in the loss ... the ‘Dogs outshot the Hornets, 8-6 in the match ... Krissy Looney led the team with four shots ... the Bulldog offense kept the pressure on continuing to attack the goal, but came up unlucky ... Fresno State will conclude their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at St. Mary’s.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (4-6-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 2-0-0 last week with a pair of wins over Detroit-Metch, 1-0 and 2-0 ... Kanani Taaca recorded the two shutouts in goal for the Rainbow Wahine ... Britta Bourne led the team with two goals and one assist for five points ... Bourne scored the game-winning goal in the two team first match ... she then assisted the game-winning goal in the second match ... Bourne also led the team with 20 shots over the two matches ... Ambree Ako scored the game-winning goal in the second match ... this week, Hawai‘i opens WAC play at home against San Jose State and Fresno State.
Idaho Vandals (7-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Idaho went 2-0-0 last week with wins over South Dakota and Weber State ... at 7-4, Idaho is off to the best start in school history … Idaho’s 4-0 record in non-conference games is the best in school history … Idaho has allowed one goal or less in 10 straight games, including three shutouts … Idaho’s seven wins are the most since 2001 ... the team needs four more to tie the school record for single-season wins ... this week, Idaho opens conference play with road matches at Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (11-0-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech broke their school record of 10 wins set last year with their 11th in a 2-1 win over Houston Baptist on Sunday … they are leading the nation in offensive output outscoring opponents 49-6 … Tech is one of a few programs with no losses this season … the Lady Techsters will open conference play at home against Idaho on Friday before hosting Boise State on Sunday.
Nevada Wolf Pack (3-8-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Junior transfer Kesia Broome scored her first career goal at UC Davis Sunday … Nevada ended its non-conference season with a 3-8 record … freshman Dana Moreno made career-high 10 saves in the Pack’s loss at St. Mary’s … Nevada has gone 2-for-2 in the last three games on penalty kicks … sophomore Annabelle Allen has converted both attempts for the Pack … Nevada will host Utah State on Sunday in Nevada’s conference opener.
New Mexico State Aggies (5-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
NM State won its first tournament title with 2-1 wins over Northwestern State and Lamar in the Lamar Soccer Classic in Beaumont, Texas ... against Northwestern State, freshman midfielder Jazmin Cardoso scored her third goal this season to tie the match and then freshman defender Courtney Irwin made her first career goal to give the Aggies the win ... with only two minutes remaining in regulation, freshman defender Yolanda McMillion lifted the Aggies to victory over tournament host Lamar with her second goal of the season ... freshman midfielder Vanessa Novella recorded her first assist on the play. Additionally, sophomore midfielder Marisa Moya collected her first career score.
San Jose State Spartans (5-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
SJSU heads into its 2009 WAC opener at Hawai’i on Friday, on a school-record five-match win streak … Nina Butera’s scoreless streak in the Spartan goal is now at 345:47 … SJSU’s team scoreless stretch is at 390:47, having matched another program record with four consecutive shutouts … at 5-4, the Spartans are above the .500 mark at the nine-game point for just the fourth time in their 15-year history … seniors Emmy Belding and Roxy Kamal share the top spot on the team chart with four goals apiece, with Kamal having provided a team-best 12 points to date … following the match at UH, the Spartans return briefly to non-conference play at Sacramento State on Sunday, October 4.
Utah State State Aggies (5-5-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Sophomore forward Shantel Flanary scored the game-winning goal in the Aggies 2-1 overtime win over instate rival Utah on Sept. 24 ... the win was Utah State’s first win against the Utes since 1997 and only its second ever ... with less than two minutes left in the first overtime, Flanary scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to give USU the win. She now has five goals and two assists for 12 points this season ... Utah State also dropped a 3-0 decision at BYU ... this week, Utah State hosts Idaho State before traveling to Nevada to open its WAC schedule.
WAC NOTES
HAWAI‘I’S BOURNE NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hawai‘i’s Britta Bourne has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27.
Bourne, a senior forward from Honolulu, O’ahu (Montana), scored two goals and registered an assist for five points to help Hawai‘i to a pair of wins over Detroit-Mercy. Bourne recorded the game-winning goal in the 68th minute to give the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 victory in the team’s first match. Bourne then assisted the game-winning goal and recorded the insurance score in UH’s 2-0 win on Saturday.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State freshman midfielder Catherine Leewaye; Fresno State junior midfielder Krissy Looney; Idaho freshman midfielder Jill Flockhart; Louisiana Tech sophomore midfielder Scott Culton; San Jose State sophomore midfielder Shanelle Furner; and Utah State sophomore forward Shantel Flanary.
BOISE STATE’S HICKOK NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Boise State’s Lauren Hickok has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27.
Hickok, a freshman defender from Bozeman, Mont. (Bozeman HS), earned tournament MVP honors at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic last week after anchoring the Boise State defense to a pair of shutouts. Hickok helped BSU to the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic title with a 1-0-1 record. Hickok repeatedly turned away opponent’s attacks into the BSU defensive third as she helped BSU to back-to-back shutouts. In addition to playing all 200 minutes over the weekend, she also took four shots placing three on goal.
Other defensive nominees included: Fresno State freshman defender Bianca Lopez; Hawai‘i freshman goalkeeper Kanani Taaca; Idaho sophomore goalkeeper Liz Boyden; Louisiana Tech sophomore goalkeeper Cat Buchanan; New Mexico State senior goalkeeper Katie Graul; San Jose State junior goalkeeper Nina Butera.
WEEK SIX HIGHLIGHTS
The WAC registered 11 wins this past week. Louisiana Tech has a record 11 wins to start the season after tying Sam Houston State and defeating Houston Baptist. Idaho is also off to its best start in program history after picking up a pair of wins over South Dakota and Weber State. The Vandals are now 7-4-0. Boise State, which had registered four straight ties, defeated Gonzaga last week to win the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Laramie. New Mexico State also won a tournament title this past week, winning the Lamar Classic after defeating Lamar and Northwestern State. Hawai‘i won a pair of matches over Detroit-Mercy, while San Jose State won two matches against Notre Dame de Namur and Air Force. Utah State won a thrilling overtime match against in-state rival Utah.
SOCCER FORMAT
The WAC will continue its regular-season play as a single round-robin format for a total of eight conference matches. The points system is as follows: each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The six teams with the most points at the end of the regular season will advance to the WAC Tournament which is being held Nov. 5-6 and 8 in Boise, Idaho.
