TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Boise State Broncos (5-8-1, 2-1-0 WAC)
Boise State enters the week at 5-8-1 overall and 2-1 in WAC play ... the Broncos split a pair of home games last weekend defeating New Mexico State 6-0 before dropping a close 1-0 decision to Louisiana Tech ... four different players scored against NMSU led by Cheyenne Jones and Shannon Saxton with two goals and one assist apiece ... these two contests were only the second and third home matches of the year for the Broncos to date ... this week Boise State hits the road for Utah State on Friday and Nevada on Sunday ... Shannon Saxton leads Boise State in goals, assists and points at five, four and 14 respectively.
Fresno State Bulldogs (4-7-2, 0-2-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs started the weekend with a double overtime time tie against CSU Bakersfield ... Chrissy Smith recorded the shutout in her first start of the year and she had four saves ... the ‘Dogs concluded the weekend with a 1- 0 loss to Hawai’i ... Kaitlyn Revel had five saves, while Kendall VanDine and Nicole Duff led the offensive attack with two shots each .... Fresno State hits the road this week taking on New Mexico State on Oct. 15 and Louisiana Tech on Oct. 17.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (3-10-2, 1-2-1 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 1-0-1 last week ... the Rainbow Wahine finished its first game of the week at San Jose State in a 1-1 draw in double overtime ... the team followed up that performance with a 1-0 victory at Fresno State ... after UH fell behind 1-0 in the first half at SJSU, Brittani Lum evened up the score with her first career goal in the 64th minute on a 20-yard shot that proved to be the game-tying score ... UH picked up its first win in more than a month with a 1-0 decision over Fresno State at Bulldog Stadium ... Skye Shimabukuro’s goal in the 51st minute off an assist from Karli Look proved to be the game-winner as UH snapped a nine-match winless streak.
Idaho Vandals (12-3-0, 3-0-0 WAC)
Idaho tied, then broke the school record for single-season wins during the week … Idaho’s 3-0 WAC record is its best conference start in school history, while its 12 total wins are a school record … four different Vandals scored a goal and three different players assisted one during the week … Idaho has allowed just nine on-target shots in three WAC contests, and just two after halftime … Idaho’s 32 shots against New Mexico State are the most in a single WAC game so far this season ... this week, Idaho travels to play Nevada on Friday before heading to Logan to face Utah State on Sunday.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (12-4-0, 2-2-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 1-1 on the week with a 2-0 loss at Idaho and a 1-0 win at Boise State ... Tech’s win over Boise State was its second WAC win of the season and its first-ever road win in conference play ... the Lady Techster’s 2-2 start to conference play is their best all-time as they had never had two conference wins in a season before ... Tech’s goal scored by Rachel King was her 12th of the season, matching her own single-season record ... this weekend, the Lady Techsters host San Jose State and Fresno State.
Nevada Wolf Pack (6-6-2, 1-2-0 WAC)
Nevada went 0-1-0 last week ... the team took a 3-1 setback at Utah State ... the Pack was down 2-0 at the half, surrendering two goals to Lauren Hanson, her sixth and seventh of the year ... Nevada pulled to within one goal when Annabelle Allen scored off of a free kick early in the second half ... one goal is as close as the Pack would get, as Shantel Flannery scored in the 86th minute to put the contest away for Utah State ... the Pack took eight shots on goal, forcing Aggie keeper Molli Merrill to make three saves. Nevada earned two corner kicks and committed eight fouls ... Nevada will host Idaho on Friday before welcoming Boise State on Sunday.
New Mexico State Aggies (6-6-2, 0-4-0 WAC)
New Mexico State fell at Boise State, 6-0, Oct. 8, and at Idaho, 4-1, Oct. 10 ... against the Vandals, sophomore midfielder/forward Lauren Cope put back a rebound to give the Aggies a 1-0 advantage in the first two minutes of the match ... the goal was Cope’s second of the season, while freshman forward/defender Kristen Powers recorded her first career assist on the play.
San Jose State Spartans (7-5-1, 1-0-1 WAC)
The Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches this past weekend with a 1-1 tie at home against Hawai’i and a 2-1 win at UC Davis ... on Friday, San Jose State staked a season-high 25 shots in its WAC home-opener against Hawai’i ... on Sunday, the Spartans netted two goals in the final 11 minutes to steal the win from UC Davis ... the Spartans finished the weekend 1-0-1, 0-0-1.
Utah State State Aggies (5-4-4, 2-0-0 WAC)
Utah State went 2-0-0 last week with a 3-1 win at Nevada and a 3-0 victory at home against Houston Baptist ... against Nevada, senior forward Lauren Hansen tied Brigid Turner for second-place in career goals at USU as she scored her two goals to help the Aggies to the win over the Pack ... Hansen tied Jayme Gordy for the most points scored in Utah State soccer history in the Aggies’ 3-0 non-conference win over Houston Baptist ... with tje two goals, Hansen now stands alone in second place in career goals scored at USU with 34 ... she is one goal away from tying Jayme Gordy (1997-2000) for first place in career goals.
WAC NOTES
IDAHO’S SMALL NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Idaho’s Chelsea Small has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 4-10
Small, a sophomore forward from Solana Beach, Calif. (Torrey Pines), was responsible for five goals in leading Idaho to a 2-0 record against Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State. Small scored both goals and tallied six shots on goal in Idaho’s 2-0 win against LA Tech. She then assisted Idaho’s first and fourth goals, and scored the team’s game-winning second goal in a 4-1 come-from-behind win over NM State. Small’s score against New Mexico State broke Idaho’s single-season school record (12), while her four points in the match put her at 28 for the year, which is also a school record. Small scored the game-winning goals in each match, extending her streak to four consecutive contests with a winning goal. Small now has school-record seven game-winning goals this season which leads the WAC. Small’s game-winner against NM State also gave Idaho its school-record 12th win of the season.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State senior forward Shannon Saxton … Louisiana Tech junior forward Rachel King … San Jose State senior forward Katie Knopp … Utah State senior forward Lauren Hansen.
HAWAI‘I’S TAACA NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hawai‘i’s Kanani Taaca has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 4-10
Taaca, a sophomore goalkeeper from Wai`anae, O`ahu (Kamehameha Schools- Kapalama), posted her third shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory at Fresno State. The win over the Bulldogs snapped a nine-match winless streak for Hawai‘i and gave UH its first WAC win of the season. Taaca also helped preserve a 1-1 tie at San Jose State with seven saves while playing all 110 minutes. On the week, Taaca posted one shutout, nine saves and one win.
Other defensive nominees included: Boise State junior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz … Fresno State senior goalkeeper Chrissy Smith … Idaho sophomore defender Lauren Layton … San Jose State junior goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald … Utah State sophomore defender Natalie Norris.
WEEK EIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
Idaho’s Chelsea Small was responsible for five goals in pair of Idaho victories this past week. Idaho defeated both Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State. The two wins put Idaho in a tie with Utah State for the top spot in the league’s standings. Utah State also went 2-0 this past week with a win over Nevada and a non-conference victory over Houston Baptist. USU’s Lauren Hansen helped the Aggies to the wins with four goals and one assist over the two matches. Hawai‘i picked up its first WAC win of the season, defeating Fresno State 1-0. Brittani Lum and Skye Shimabukuro registered goals for the Rainbow Wahine as UH went 1-0-1 last week.
2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS
Excluding last year’s WAC representitive Boise State, WAC teams played in 11 matches against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Six of the matches were played at WAC home sites. WAC teams combined for a 2-6-3 record in thos matches.

2010 WAC TOURNAMENT
The 2010 Western Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament will be held at Lady Techster Soccer Field on the campus of Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Louisiana Tech Ticket Office at (318) 257-3631 or 3632 .
COLLEGE CUP
The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
