Fresno State 3, Cal State Bakersfield 2
The Bulldog volleyball team took care of business by completing the season sweep of CSU Bakersfield with a 3-2 victory (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-27 and 15-11) over the Roadrunners in the Icardo Center on Wednesday night.
The performance marked the Bulldogs' eighth win of the season and moved Fresno State to 3-0 in five-set matches this year. The Dogs are the only unbeaten WAC team in five-set contests in 2010.
Marissa Brand's offensive explosiveness took center stage as the sophomore outside hitter from Cypress, Calif., recorded her seventh double-double of the season to move into the top ten among WAC student-athletes. Brand powered a match-high 22 kills, the most since she delivered 23 kills on Oct. 2 at Nevada and second best clip of her career, and dug 12 balls.
Senior Kelly Mason led the Dogs with 15 digs. Senior Lauren Berger, junior Brianna Clarke and sophomore Cecilia Agraz each added nine kills apiece. Senior Kasey Van Grouw dished out 26 assists and freshman Erin Stock tossed up 21 assists.
Utah Valley 3, Boise State 1
The Boise State volleyball team suffered a tough loss in their final non-conference match of the 2010 season, falling to Utah Valley University Wednesday (Oct. 20) night. The Broncos (17-7) dropped a 3-2 (25-14, 26-24, 16-25, 25-22) match to the Wolverines (15-9), a team they defeated 3-0 in Boise on Sept. 7. With the loss, the Broncos fall back to a 2-7 all-time series trailing UVU.
Utah Valley was able to come quickly out of the start, hitting a .400 first set (12-2-25), while also leading the set from start to finish. In the second set, Boise State put on the pressure, forcing 11 ties and five lead changes before UVU came out with the win. Boise State hit their best in set three with a .389 hitting percentage (10-3-18), overcoming eight ties and two lead changes to win the set. Utah Valley responded quickly in set four, however, pushing past only two ties and one lead change before earning the final set win.
The Wolverines were able to shut down the Broncos' attack tallying 26 individual blocks, as well as 13.0 team blocks. UVU's Dani Robison led the efforts with seven block assists on the night, while Sarah Clement added six. Boise State's top blocker was Alisha Young, tallying three assists on the night.
Boise State's Cailin Fellows led the Broncos' offense with 10 kills (.154), while Breann Nesselhuf led the match in hitting percentage (.714, 5-0-7), 35 assists, four service aces and added six digs and two block assists as well. Boise State's Amanda Remy led the match with 13 digs on the night.
