WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Boise State Broncos (7-8-2, 4-1-1 WAC)
Boise State enters the week at 7-8-2 overall and 4-1-1 in WAC play ... the Broncos played one match last week when they defeated the University of Idaho 1-0 in overtime at Boise ... Ebbie Harris scored the match-winner 43 seconds into overtime to keep Boise State’s title hopes alive ... the Broncos will close out the regular season this coming weekend when they host Fresno State for Senior Day on Friday before traveling to San Jose State for the final on Sunday ... Shannon Saxton continues to lead Boise State on the year with team-highs for goals and assists with five and four respectively ... she is also the career record holder at Boise State for goals with 34, assists with 20 and points with 88.
Fresno State Bulldogs (6-8-3, 2-3-1 WAC)
The Bulldogs went unbeaten in their last games of the 2010 season in Bulldog Stadium ... Fresno State beat first place Utah State 1-0 on Friday night and tied Nevada 1-1 in double overtime ... Vanessa Gonzalez led the team in shots with seven in two games ... Kaitlyn Revel earned her fourth shutout of the year and recorded seven saves ... seniors Nicole Duff and Claudia Cardenas scored goals as the Bulldogs celebrated senior weekend ... the ‘Dogs conclude the 2010 season on the road against Boise State on Oct. 29 and Idaho on Oct. 31.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (3-12-3, 1-3-2 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 0-1-1 last week ... the team dropped a 3-0 decision to Louisiana Tech before settling with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against New Mexico State ... against LA Tech, the Lady Techsters scored a goal in the first half, then tacked on two goals in a two-minute span late in the second half to secure the victory and hand UH its seventh straight home loss ... UH played New Mexico State to a 2-2 tie in double overtime on Senior Night ... The Rainbow Wahine twice held the lead in the match, but were unable to bag the win. The tie, however, snapped a school-record seven-match home losing streak ... UH plays at Nevada and at Utah State to wrap up regular season play.
Idaho Vandals (13-5-0, 4-2-0 WAC)
Idaho took a tough overtime loss in cold, rainy conditions at Boise State on Sunday by a 1-0 margin … despite the setback, the Vandal women retained the Governor’s Cup for the second year in a row, based on their three points from the 2-1 regulation win over Idaho State on Sept. 3 … sophomore Chelsea Small’s four shot attempts on Sunday give her 102 for the season, which breaks her own school record of 101 from her freshman season last year ... she needs just 23 more shot attempts to break Idaho’s career record.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (14-5-0, 4-3-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 1-0 on the week with a 3-0 win at Hawai’i on Friday ... forward Rachel King is always a scoring threat, but in this game the senior recorded two assists to give her three for the season ... freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke recorded her sixth shutout of the season which tied the school record ... it was Tech’s first-ever win over Hawai’i as it continues it’s best season ever with an overall record of 14-5 and WAC record of 4-3 ... the Lady Techsters wrap up the regular season on Friday at New Mexico State.
Nevada Wolf Pack (6-9-3, 1-5-1 WAC)
Nevada went 0-1-1 this past week ... the Wolf Pack dropped a 4-0 decision at San Jose State before taking Fresno State to a 1-1 tie in double overtime ... Nevada held the lead against SJSU in shots after the first frame, outshooting the Spartans 10-7 but could never catch up ofensively to the Spartans ... fighting for a spot in the WAC Championship, Nevada played the Bulldogs tight to the finish, going 110 minutes to get the point ... Kori Disarufino tallied her second goal of the season five minutes into the contest, putting the ball in from 18 yards out ... Marie Cove made five saves on six shots on goal ... the game stayed scoreless through the second overtime period to end as a draw.
New Mexico State Aggies (7-7-3, 1-5-1 WAC)
In the final road WAC match of the regular season, the New Mexico State soccer team recorded a 2-2 tie in double overtime at Hawai’i, Oct. 24 ... the draw was the first for the Aggies in conference play this season ... the Aggies tied the match 1-1 when sophomore forward Crystal Burns found sophomore forward Yolanda McMillion on a cross in the 9th minute ... McMillion now has a team-high seven goals this season. In the 57th minute, NM State then tied the match, 2-2, with its first own goal of the season.
San Jose State Spartans (10-6-1, 4-1-1 WAC)
San Jose State won two WAC home games by a score of 8-1, hosting Nevada on Friday and Utah State on Sunday ... goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald captured the shutout on Friday in the 4-0 win, her third of the season ... on Sunday, freshman Kayla Santacruz tallied the Spartans first hat trick of the season, powering the Spartans past first-place Utah State, 4-1.
Utah State State Aggies (8-6-5, 4-2-1 WAC)
Utah State went 0-2-0 last week, dropping a 1-0 decision at Fresno State and a 4-1 setback to San Jose State ... agasinst Fresno State, the second half remained scoreless until Fresno State scored in the 83rd minute ... against San Jose State, Utah State cut into the SJSU 4-0 lead in the 80th minute when freshman Mari Miyashiro scored her second goal of the season ... Utah State returns home for its final regular-season match on Sunday, Oct. 31 against Hawai`i on 1 p.m. ... the Aggies will honor their three seniors in Stefani Shiozaki, Lauren Hansen and Heather Pond.
WAC NOTES
SAN JOSE STATE’S SANTACRUZ NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
San Jose State’s Kayla Santacruz has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 18-24.
Santacruz, a freshman midfielder from San Ramon, Calif. (California HS), led San Jose State to a pair of wins over Nevada and Utah State last week. Santacruz tallied her first collegiate hat trick with three goals and an assist to lead the Spartans to a 4-1 victory against Utah State on Sunday. She also scored a goal on Friday to help SJSU to a 4-0 win over Nevada. Overall on the week, Santacruz tallied five shots on goal, four goals, one assist and nine points.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State sophomore forward Ebbie Harris … Idaho sophomore midfielder Megan Lopez.
BOISE STATE’S RUIZ NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Boise State’s Liz Ruiz has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 18-24.
Ruiz, a junior goalkeeper from Boise, Idaho (Capital HS), anchored the Boise State defense in the Broncos’ 1-0 overtime victory over in-state rival Idaho on Sunday. Ruiz stopped all six Vandal shots on goal, including a shot from distance. Idaho sent a high-arching shot over the defense that dipped towards the goal. Ruiz was forced to stretch high to touch the ball off the crossbar and over the net to preserve the scoreless draw with 18 minutes left in regulation. The save gave Boise State the opportunity to win their lone match of the week in overtime.
Other defensive nominees included: Fresno State senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel … Idaho junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden … San Jose State junior goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald.
WEEK TEN HIGHLIGHTS
San Jose State went 2-0 last week to position itself into a tie for the top spot in the WAC standings. Kayla Santacruz recorded four goals, including a hat trick and an assist to lead the Spartans. Louisiana Tech kept itself in contention for a WAC title, defeating Hawai‘i 3-0 in its only game of the week. Boise State went 1-0 with an overtime victory over in-state rival Idaho, putting itself into a three-way tie for the top spot in the WAC. Fresno State kept its tournament hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Utah State and a tie against Nevada.

COLLEGE CUP
The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
