EDWARDS NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Boise State's Elyse Edwards has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Month for September.
Edwards, a sophomore from Adelaide, South Australia, led the charge for Boise State at the Cougar Classic, Sept. 24-26, as she raced to the Crimson Bracket singles title with a 6-0 record on the weekend. Edwards was so dominant she took five of six matches in straight sets. The only time she was pushed to a third set match came against teammate Marlena Pietzuch, who fell to Edwards, 4-6, 6-2, 3-0 (retired), in the semifinals. Edwards wrapped up the singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Washington State's Ksenia Googe.
Other female nominees included: Fresno State's Melissa McQueen made it to the final round in the ITA Blue Singles, flight 2, and got to the quarterfinals in the consolation bracket in ITA Blue Doubles at the Cal Nike Invitational ... Idaho's Lauren Simpson went 2-1 in September and advanced to the round of 16 at the Cougar Classic ... Nevada's Aodhnait Lombard won the ITA White Singles Flight at the Cal Nike Invitational ... New Mexico State's Jodie Williams went 4-0 on her way to the Aggie Invite singles title, while also going 2-1 in doubles, Sept. 17-19 ... Utah State's Taylor Perry took first place at the BYU Fall Invitational B Draw and second place in the doubles draw with teammate Jaclyn West.
BOISE STATE'S MEGALE SHINES AT REGIONALS
The Broncos compiled a 16-3 singles record while capturing a singles title and a runner-up finish in doubles at the Cougar Classic, Sept 24-26. Sophomore Elyse Edwards led the charge for Boise State in singles as she raced to the Crimson Bracket title with a 6-0 record, winning five of six matches in straight sets. In doubles, sophomore Marlena Pietzuch and junior Sonia Klamczynska joined forces to earn a runner-up finish in the Crimson Bracket as the duo racked up a 3-1 record over the weekend.
FRESNO STATE'S FRESHMEN PERFORMING WELL
Melissa McQueen advanced to the consolation bracket in the Blue Singles Consolation where she defeated Nevada's Lais Ogata, 6-4, 6-4 to claim victory at the Cal Nike Invitational, Sept. 24-26. Also racking up a victory was the doubles team of Laura Pola and Marianne Jodoin, who defeated Arizona's Natasha Marks and Susan McRann, 8-6, competing in the Gold Doubles Consolation quarterfinals.
IDAHO'S DOUBLES TEAMS HAVE NICE MONTH
Yvette Ly advanced to the finals at the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash., as the Vandals put together a strong showing in their opening fall tournament. Ly won four straight matches over a three day span before falling in the finals to Washington State's Marina Nicolas, 6-3, 6-2 in the gray flight.
NEVADA PICKS UP TITLES AT NIKE INVITATIONAL
Two members of the Nevada women's tennis team came away from the Cal Nike Invitational with titles. Aodhnait Lombard won the ITA White Singles Flight after receiving a bye into the quarterfinals, and Florence De Vrye won the ITA White Doubles flight. De Vrye played with Ania Jeczmionka of Long Beach State on the way to the title.
NM STATE'S KULIAF SOLID FOR AGGIES
New Mexico State freshman Jodie Williams defeated Alexandra Glebova of UTEP in a tough three-set match to win the championship of the white singles main draw at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Sept. 17-19.
SAN JOSE STATE PRESCOTT, TRUONG PLAY UP
Sabastiani Leon Chao of San Jose State stood until the end of the final day after prevailing 10-6 in a tiebreaker vs. Fresno State's Melissa McQueen, leaving her at the top of the consolation bracket at the Cal Nike Invitational, Sept 24-26.
UTAH STATE'S SWENSEN HAS DOMINANT MONTH
Utah State senior Taylor Perry led the Aggies, taking first place in the Singles B Draw at the BYU Invite. Perry defeated BYU's Andie Young, 6-4, 6-2, in the final round. She also advanced to the final round of the doubles draw with partner, Jaclyn West. Perry and West fell to BYU's Callie Craig and Megan Price, 8-6.
WAC IN THE PRESEASON RANKINGS
In the 2010 preseason ITA rankings, the WAC has two doubles teams ranked. Leading the way at No. 48 is Boise State's Lauren Megale and Sonia Klamczynskz, followed by Laura Pola and Olga Kirpicheva of Fresno State at No. 52. There were no singles players from the WAC ranked by the ITA in the preseason.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE
The 2010 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 29-May 1 in Boise, Idaho. Top-seeded Boise State earned its first-ever WAC Women's Tennis Championship last season with a 4-3 win over No. 3-seed Fresno State in the title match. The Broncos' victory ended the Bulldogs streak of eight-straight titles.
