WAC NOTES

IDAHO CLAIMS WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TITLE IN MOSCOW

The Idaho women's cross country claimed its third WAC Championship title in six years in Moscow, Idaho, Saturday, Oct. 30.

The team finished with 46 points, which was 25 points ahead of second-place Utah State. The top runner for the Vandals was junior Lauren Schaffer, who finished in fourth place and covered the 5K course in a time of 17:48. Schaffer was one of three Idaho runners to finish in the top 10, as she was followed by freshman Hannah Kiser, sixth place, and senior Maggie Miller, 10th-place.

The Vandals won the WAC championship due to their amount of depth and consistency. All of Idaho's runners finished in the top 25 of the race, with five of the seven finishing in the top 15; no other team had more than three in the top 15.

Schaffer and Kiser (17:51) each earned All-WAC first team honors, while Miller (18:04) and senior Erica Digby (18:10) earned All-WAC second-team. Head Coach Wayne Phipps accepted some hardware of his own as he was named WAC Coach of the Year for his efforts with the Vandals.

After the championship, Phipps was pleased with where his team was at and was eager as he looked ahead to the regional championship, taking place on Nov. 13.

"We've just been getting better and better every weekend, and really, we didn't have a perfect race today," Phipps told Idaho athletic media relations. "I think if we put everything together, we have the ability to really surprise some people in Eugene."

BOISE STATE WINS MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Boise State men's cross country team won the Western Athletic Conference Championship for the first time in school history as they upset a favored Utah State team on Oct. 30, in Moscow, Idaho.

Boise State senior Sawyer Bosch earned the top spot for the Bronco men over the 8-kilometer course placing fourth (24:43.55), earning his second career All-WAC first team honor and fourth All-WAC honor overall.

All of Boise State's runners finished in the top 25 of the race, and were the only team to have three runners in the top 10. Freshman Allan Schroeder was second for the Broncos finishing ninth-place overall (25:17). Fellow freshman Drew O'donoghue-McDonald and sophomore Jeff Howard joined Schroeder on the All-WAC second team with O'donoghue-McDonald placing ninth (25:18) and Howard placing 14th (25:19).

The Broncos were able to capture the team title with 57 points on the day. New Mexico State placed second with 66 points just squeaking  by defending champion Utah State who placed third with 67 points.

Boise State's victory brought an end to the Utah State men's streak of five-straight titles, which was the longest streak of any current WAC member.
