WAC Wins Three of Four ESPN BracketBusters Television Games

Utah State 68, Wichita State 58

LOGAN, Utah (AP)-- Tai Wesley scored 13 points as Utah State defeated Wichita State 68-58 in a BracketBuster game Saturday night.

Nate Bendall added 12 points for the Aggies (22-6) and Brady Jardine had 11.

J.T. Durley led the Shockers (22-7) with 12 points and David Kyles added 11.

Wichita State hit consecutive 3-pointers to pull to within 56-49 with less than 4 minutes to play, but the Shockers were unable to get any closer.

Utah State pulled away in the first half with a 10-0 run for a 26-13 lead and went into halftime up 30-20.

The Aggies outscored the Shockers in the paint 32-18 and outshot them 51 percent-40 percent.



Louisiana Tech 70, Northeastern 67

BOSTON -- DeAndre Brown banked in a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left and Louisiana Tech scored the last seven points to beat Northeastern 70-67 on Saturday.

Northeastern had three looks from 3-point range to tie the score, but Chaisson Allen's final shot fell short to preserve the victory for the Bulldogs (21-6).

Brown scored 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the floor and 4 of 5 from beyond the arc for Louisiana Tech. Jamel Guyton had 18 points and Magnum Rolle added 17 points.

The Huskies (18-10) led by eight points on Allen's layup with 8:46 left in the second half. Louisiana Tech cut Northeastern's lead to 67-63 with 3:36 to play, then ran off seven straight on Kyle Gibson's 3-pointer, Rolle's free throw and Brown's go-ahead shot.

Matt Janning led Northeastern with 19 points and seven assists. Nkem Ojougboh had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.



New Mexico State 84, Pacific 78

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP)--Jahmar Young scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead New Mexico State to an 84-78 victory over Pacific in a BracketBusters game Saturday night.

The Aggies scored 55 points in the second half on 63.0 percent shooting from the floor to recover from a four-point halftime deficit.

Trailing 43-37 early in the second half, New Mexico State moved ahead with a 10-2 run and soon followed that with a 14-3 spurt to take command.

Jonathan Gibson and Hernst Laroche made back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Aggies a 65-53 lead with 5:23 to play, and New Mexico State's lead never fell below four points the rest of the way.

Gibson scored 20 points for New Mexico State (17-9, 9-3 Western Athletic) and Troy Gillenwater had 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench for the Aggies.

Demetrece Young scored a career-high 27 points to lead Pacific (17-9, 9-3 Big West), including seven 3-pointers.



San Jose State 77, Montana State 66

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP)-- Chris Oakes had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead San Jose State to a 77-66 win over Montana State in a nonconference BracketBuster series game Saturday night.

The Spartans (13-12) gained their first road win in 2010, breaking a streak of six straight losses away from home dating back to a 74-68 win at Santa Clara on Dec. 23.

Adrian Oliver had 18 points for SJSU. Robert Owens added 15 and Mac Peterson had 14 points and nine rebounds. The Spartans outrebounded the Bobcats 46-33.

Danny Piepoli led Montana State (14-13) with 17 points. Bobby Howard added 15 and Marquis Navarre 13.

The Bobcats led 30-25 before SJSU closed out the first half with a 15-1 run. Oakes keyed the streak with six points to give the Spartans a 40-31 halftime lead.

SJSU enjoyed a big edge at the free-throw line, making 22 of 30 compared to 10 of 16 for the Bobcats.



Missouri State 62, Nevada 60

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP)-- Nafis Ricks hit a pair of free throws with 3 seconds left Saturday, helping Missouri State overcome a 10-point second-half deficit and beat Nevada 62-60 in a nonconference BracketBusters series game.

The Bears (18-10) trailed 55-45 when Nevada's Armon Johnson scored on a dunk with 6:32 remaining. Missouri State tied the game at 57 with a 12-2 run that was capped by Will Creekmore's jump shot with 3:03 remaining. Creekmore had six points during the run.

Ricks scored the game-winner when he was fouled while rebounding a miss from teammate Adam Leonard as the Bears worked for the last shot.

Kyle Weems led Missouri State with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Creekmore and Leonard had 11 points each.

Luke Babbitt led Nevada (16-10) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson added 15 points.



UC Santa Barbara 64, Fresno State 60

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)-- Orlando Johnson scored 23 points, including the clinching free throws, as UC Santa Barbara held off Fresno State 64-60 on Saturday night in a BracketBuster game.

Fresno State had a chance to take the lead on its second-to-last possession, but Paul George's 3-point attempt slammed off the backboard. Johnson grabbed the rebound, got fouled and sank two free throws with 0.4 seconds left.

Mike Ladd led the Bulldogs with 16 points, and George added 13 despite playing with four fouls for most of the second half.

James Powell added 10 points for the Gauchos (16-8), who lead the Big West Conference by a half-game over Pacific. Fresno State (13-15) is fifth in the Western Athletic Conference.



UC Davis 82, Boise State 74

BOISE, Idaho (AP)-- Dominic Calegari scored 26 points and Joe Harden added 24 to lead UC Davis to an 82-74 victory over Boise State in a BracketBuster game Saturday night.

The Aggies (11-15) shot 57.1 percent (8 of 14) from 3-point range while winning on the road for just the third time all season.

Daequon Montreal led Boise State (12-15) with 15 points, and Paul Noonan added 14.

UC Davis led by 16 after a 3-pointer by Adam Malik made it 50-34 with 15:25 remaining. Boise State trimmed its deficit to 74-67 with 1:38 left on a 3 by Robert Arnold but got no closer.

Calegari hit back-to-back 3-pointers during an 11-0 run that gave UC Davis a 28-19 lead with 3:32 left in the first half. The Aggies made six 3-pointers in the first half and led 36-27 at halftime.

UC Davis played without leading scorer Mark Payne, who missed his fourth consecutive game because of illness.




Long Beach State 77, Idaho 66

MOSCOW, Idaho -- T.J. Robinson got his 16th double-double of the season as he scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to carry Long Beach State past Idaho 77-66 on Saturday.

The 49ers (13-14) got ahead early, going into the break up 35-21 and then leading by as many as 17 points early in the second half.

They were also helped out by Casper Ware, who scored 20 points, including shooting 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Greg Plater added 12 points and Larry Anderson had 10.

The Vandals (13-13) cut their deficit to eight points, 58-50, with about 5 1/2 minutes to go when Steffan Johnson hit a pair of 3-pointers. But they didn't get closer after that.

Johnson finished with 11 points, while Mac Hopson led the team with 15 points, including 11-for-11 shooting from the free-throw line.

Marvin Jefferson added 13 points for the Vandals.

 

Cal Poly 102, Hawaii 89

HONOLULU -- Lorenzo Keeler scored 31 points and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo hit 11 3-pointers in a 102-89 victory over Hawaii in a BracketBuster game Saturday night.

David Hanson added 18 points and Shawn Lewis had 17 for the Mustangs (10-16.

Roderick Flemings scored a career-high 39 points for the Warriors (9-17), and Petras Balocka added 23 points and 16 rebounds.

Cal Poly scored its most points since beating Long Beach State 103-88 on Feb. 8, 2001 and reached triple digits for the first time since a 100-79 victory over Portland State on Nov. 27, 2001.

The Mustangs built a 23-point lead in the first half before Hawaii rallied to within 64-56 with less than 14 minutes to play. The Warriors, who lost their eighth straight, never got any closer.
