NAMPA - The Louisiana Tech women and the Utah State men captured the 2010 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho on Saturday. It was Louisiana Tech’s third-consecutive and fifth crown in the last six years. For the men, it was Utah State’s second title in the last three seasons.

For the women, Louisiana Tech won the championship with 175 points, its highest-ever team point total, and the fifth highest in the history of the WAC’s women’s indoor track and field championships. Utah State finished second with 104.5 points, its highest finish and point total since joining the WAC. Idaho compiled 102 for third place, and New Mexico State earned a school-high 63 points to nab its highest finish of fourth place. Hawai‘i came in fifth with 61.50 points, followed by Nevada in sixth place with 55.50 points. Boise State had 51 points for seventh place, while Fresno State finished eighth with 49.50 points.

For the men, Utah State tallied 154 points to nab its second indoor track and field conference title. Boise State was not far behind, earning 144.50 points to come in second. Idaho put 121.50 points on the board for third place, and Louisiana Tech finished fourth with 101 points.

For the women’s individual awards (voted upon by the coaches), Utah State’s Kim Quinn earned Track Performer of the Year, as well as High Point Performer of the Year, tallying 20 points during the championship. Idaho’s Mykael Bothum garnered Field Performer of the Year, and Louisiana Tech’s Quanisha Sales took home Freshman of the Year honors. Louisiana Tech’s Gary Stanley received Coach of the Year accolades for the fifth time in six years.

For the men’s individual awards (voted upon by the coaches), Louisiana Tech’s Albert Fullwood garnered Track Performer of the Year, and Boise State’s Zacharias Arnos earned Field Performer of the Year. Boise State’s Kurt Felix compiled 24.50 points for High Point Performer of the Year, and Bronco teammate Jeff Howard received Freshman of the Year honors. Utah State’s Gregg Gensel earned Coach of the Year honors for the third time in four seasons.

The final day of competition started with the women’s high jump. Hawai‘i filled the two top spots, as senior Amber Kaufman won her second-consecutive WAC title, clearing 1.83m (6-00.00)and teammate Sarah Saddleton earned her second-consecutive silver medal, jumping 1.73m (5-08.00) for second. Nevada’s La Tijera Avery took third place with a leap of 1.70m (5-07.00).

In the women’s one mile race, Fresno State senior Roxanne Sellick captured the Bulldogs’ first gold of the championship, clocking in at 4:54.87 for the title, defeating defending champion Erin Stratton of Utah State who finished second with a time of 4:56.64. Utah State’s Jessie Chugg finished in 5:03.04 for third.

Louisiana Tech took the top two places in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, with senior Antoinette Cobb clocking a time of 8.28 seconds for the title, bettering her NCAA Provisional and WAC-leading time of 8.36 posted earlier in the season. Lady Techster teammate Tiana Davis posted a season-best time of 8.47 for second place, while Utah State senior Ashlee Cannon recorded a season-best time of 8.58 for third.

Louisiana tech swept the podium in the women’s 400-meter dash, as sophomore Monique Wright ran a season-best 54.46 for her second-consecutive WAC title. Teammate Kamelia Stroy clocked in at 54.70 to take her second-consecutive silver in the event. Fellow Lady Techster Lashannda Worthy placed  third with a season-best time of 56.05.

Louisiana Tech’s Chasidee Lewis-Baker matched her season-best time of 7.51 to nab her third-consecutive WAC title in the in the women’s 60-meter dash. Lady Techster teammates Antoinette Cobb and Quanisha Sales ran season best times of 7.52 and 7.56 for second and third places, respectively. The silver was Cobb’s second medal of the day.

In the women’s 20-pound weight throw, Boise State junior Mele Vaisima tossed a season-best and NCAA Provisional mark of 18.93m (62-01.25) for the title. Idaho sophomore Gabby Midles had a season-best mark of 17.83m (58-06.00) for second place, and Fresno State senior Nancy Vizcarra earned third with a season-best effort of 17.04m (55-11.00).

More season-best efforts were made in the women’s 800 meter run, as Idaho’s Lauren Schaffer posted a season-best 2:11.30 for the title. New Mexico State’s Melanie Clay (2:15.54) narrowly captured second place over Utah State’s Elaine Connolly (2:15.55), who finished third.

Idaho’s K.C. Dahlgren defended her title in the women’s pole vault, clearing an NCAA Provisional mark of 4.00m (13-01.50) for the gold. Second and third places were decided on number of attempts, as Boise State’s Heidi Dorling and teammate BreAnna Craig vaulted 3.85m (12-07.50) for second and third places, respectively.

Freshman Quanisha Sales nabbed her second medal and first gold of the day, running the women’s 200-meter dash in 24.33 for the title. Idaho’s Kella Jacka earned second with a season-best time of 24.59, and defending WAC champion Stacia Hanneman, of Louisiana Tech, finished in a season-best 24.62 for third place.

Louisiana Tech landed two of the three top spots in the women’s triple jump, with Quatisha Williams leaping a season-best 12.30m (40-04.25) for the gold. Hawai‘i’s Madera Apine captured silver with a 12.17m (39-11.25) effort, and Lady Techster Brittany Guy jumped 12.12m (39-09.25) for third.

It was Utah State’s turn to place two in the top three in the women’s 3,000 meters, with sophomore Kim Quinn adding to her point total, capturing the title in 10:16.71. Fresno State’s Roxanne Sellick earned her second medal of the day, taking second with a time of 10:18.11. Defending WAC Champion Erin Stratton, of Utah State, ran 10:24.08 to nab third place and her second medal of the day.

In the last women’s event of the championship, the Louisana Tech team of Monique Wright, Shante Benion, Quanisha Sales and Lashannda Worthy grabbed gold in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:46.58. Idaho and Utah State turned in season-best times of 3:47.93 and 3:49.44 for second and third places, respectively.

For the men, it was a close finish in the one mile race as senior Steve Strickland clocked in at 4:14.37, edging out teammate Eric Larson (4:14.91) for the title. Idaho senior Steve Potratz earned third with a time of 4:17.26.

Boise State went 1-2-3 in the men’s triple jump, as senior Zacharias Arnos captured the title with a season-best jump of 16.05m (52-08.00), bettering his NCAA Provisional mark of 16.01m from earlier in the season. Bronco teammate Rolando Trammel earned second with a season-best mark of 14.54 (47-08.50), as sophomore Kurt Felix picked up his third medal of the championship, posting a leap of 14.16m (46-05.50) for third place.

Another close finish of the day took place in the men’s 60 meter hurdles, Louisiana Tech junior Billy Ray Walker took home gold, posting a season-best time of 7.92 seconds to defeat Idaho’s Paul Dittmer (7.94) by two-hundredths of a second. Last year’s WAC defending champion Dylan Nielson (8.09), of Utah State, won bronze.

Louisiana Tech captured the top two places in the men’s 400-meter dash, with senior Albert Fullwood running a season-best 47.63 to earn the gold and improve his WAC-leading time of 47.90 posted earlier in the season. Bulldog teammate Demonte Willis finished in 48.23 for second, and Boise State freshman Jeff Daw clocked a 48.74 for third place.

Utah State’s Mike Pyrtle stood atop the medal podium in the men’s 60-meter dash, running a 6.80 for the title. Louisiana Tech’s Kevin Stewart took second with a time of 6.90, and Idaho’s Princeton McCarty finished in 6.93 for third, beating the fourth-place finisher, Louisiana Tech’s Terry Carter, by one thousandth of a second.

Utah State’s Joe Canavan captured the men’s shot put title, tossing a season-best mark of 17.64m (57-10.50). Idaho’s Eugenio Mannucci took second with a throw of 16.66m (54-08.00), and Boise State’s Chase Sexton posted a mark of 16.32m (53-06.50) for third place.

Utah State picked up another gold medal in the 800-meter run, as junior James Allred crossed the line in 1:52.84 for the title. Idaho junior Josh Dalton finished in 1:53.74 for second place, and Lousiana Tech’s Alwayne Green nabbed third with a time of 1:54.42.

Louisiana Tech finished 1-2 in the men’s 200-meter dash, with senior Albert Fullwood earning his second gold of the day, clocking in at a season-best 21.25 for the title. Bulldog teammate Kevin Stewart and Utah State junior Mike Pyrtle also had season-best results, finishing 21. 56 and 21.64 for second and third places, respectively. The medals were Stewart’s and Pyrtle’s second of the day.

In a thrilling photo finish of the men’s 3,000 meters, Boise State freshman Jeff Howard leaned ahead of Utah State’s Daniel Howell, crossing the finish line at 8:23.40 for the title. Defending WAC Champion Brian McKenna, of Utah State, finished with a season-best time of 8:24.05 for third place.

In the last event of the day, the Louisiana Tech men’s team of Demonte Willis, Wade MaGaha, Marcelles Atkinson and Albert Fullwood finished in 3:15.62 to take home the title. Boise State crossed the line with a season-best time of 3:17.03 for second, and Idaho was finished third with a season-best time of 3:18.40.


FRIDAY RESULTS

Boise State’s men and Idaho’s women are in the lead after day two of the three-day WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. For the men, Boise State is out in front with 75.50 points, followed by Idaho in second with 66.50 points. Utah State is in third with 59 points and Louisiana Tech has 13 points for fourth place. For the women, Idaho is in the lead with 44 points, and Utah State is in second with 34 points. Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State are tied for third with 30 points, while Hawai‘i and Nevada are tied for fifth with 19 points. Fresno State is in seventh with 10 points and Boise State is in eighth with 9 points.

Day two of championship competition began with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon. After completing four of the seven events on Thursday, Boise State’s Kurt Felix was leading with 3,142 points. The Bronco sophomore went on to capture the heptahlon title, posting 5,348 points, two better than his NCAA Provisional regular-season WAC-leading mark. Idaho’s Mike Carpenter took silver for the second year in a row with 5141 points, while Utah State’s Philip Noble compiled 5,016 points to win bronze.

In the men’s high jump, Utah State senior Clint Silcock won his second-consecutive WAC title in the event, clearing 2.15m (7-0.50) to better his NCAA Provisional mark of 2.14m during the regular season. Idaho’s Andrew Blaser took second with a season-best leap of 2.00m (6-06.75m) and no misses, while Utah State’s Casey Parker also posted a season-best height of 2.00m to earn third place with one miss overall.

Boise State’s Trevor Kraychir took home the men’s weight throw title with an NCAA Provisional heave of 19.60m (64-03.75) to give the Broncos the second top medal of the night. Idaho senior Beau Whitney finished second with a toss of 18.59m (61-00.00), while Bronco thrower Alex Nelson recorded a season-best 18.41m (60-05.00) for third.

Idaho took the two top spots in the men’s pole vault, as sophomore Jeremy Klas edged out teammate Lucas Pope at an NCAA Procisional height of 5.23m (17-01.75) for the Vandals’ first gold of the evening. Utah State sophomore John Johnson and Idaho senior Mike Carpenter both vaulted 4.93m (16-02.00) to tie for third place. It was Carpenter’s second medal of the day, while Johnson’s mark was a season best.

A trio of Boise State Broncos stood atop the medal podium in the men’s long jump. Senior Zacharias Arnos jumped a season-best 7.56m (24-09.75) to take the title, improving on his NCAA Provisional 7.55m result from earlier in the season. Sophomore teammates Kurt Felix and Eutu Viitala posted marks of 7.26m (23-10.00) and 7.20m (23-07.50) for second and third places, respectively.

Utah State’s Brian McKenna captured his second-consecutive gold medal in the men’s 5,000 meters, clocking a time of 14:30.13. Boise State freshman Jeff Howard finished second in 14:44.77 and Utah State sophomore Daniel Howell took third with a time of 14:55.38.

For the fourth year in a row, Utah State won the men’s distance medley relay. The Aggie team of Eric Larson, James Allred, Andrew Niccoli and Steve Strickland took home the title with a time of 9:59.09. Louisiana Tech edged Boise State for second, as the Bulldogs crossed the finish line in 10:02.85, fractionally ahead of the Broncos’ 10:02.91.

For the women, Louisiana Tech earned the first two places in the women’s long jump. Lady Techsters Tiana Davis and Quatisha Williams both posted season-best marks, jumping 5.99m (19-08.00) and 5.78m (18-11.75) for first and second places, respectively. Boise State sophomore Racquel Jones nabbed third with a leap of 5.75m (18-10.50) to put her team on the board.

Utah State captured its first gold of the evening as sophomore Kim Quinn ran 17:32.23 in the women’s 5,000 for the title. New Mexico State freshmen Camille Schultz and Chelsa McDonnell earned silver and bronze, posting times of 17:48.92 and 17:52.77, respectively.

In the women’s shot put, Mykael Bothum unleashed an NCAA Automatic Qualifying and season-best throw of 17.20m (56-05.25) to grab her second-consecutive conference title. Fresno State junior Rosario Sanchez earned the Bulldogs’ first medal of the evening, with a toss of 14.62m (47-11.75) for second place. Utah State junior Lindsey Spencer took third with a throw of 12.81m (42-00.50).

In the distance medley relay, the Utah State women mirrored the Aggie men, capturing the gold for the fourth year in a row. The Aggie team of Alex Litzsinger, Jen Day, Erin Stratton and Jessie Chugg took the title posting a time of 11:53.10. New Mexico State ran 11:58.15 for second, while Nevada finished third with a time of 12:27.04.

Tomorrow’s action begins at 11 a.m. with the remaining field events, while the running event finals start at 1 p.m.

                  
THURSDAY
RESULTS

NAMPA - Idaho’s women are in the lead after day one of the three-day Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho. After one women’s event, the pentathlon, Idaho leads with 22 points, followed by Hawai‘i with 7 points and Nevada in third place with 6 points. Louisiana Tech (3 points) and Utah State (1 point) round out the day’s point totals.

The day began with the women’s pentathlon and the men’s heptathlon. For the women, Idaho earned the top two spots in the pentathlon. Vandal junior Ulrike Hartz earned the first gold of the meet, posting 3,784 points for the individual title. Her teammate, senior Lindsay Goodman, took second for the second year in a row, with 3545 points. Nevada sophomore April Pate came in third with 3,494 points.

With four of the seven men’s heptathlon events complete, Boise State sophomore Kurt Felix is in the lead with 3,142 points. Idaho senior Mike Carpenter (2,925) and junior Andrew Blaser (2,798) follow in second and third places, respectively. The heptathlon’s three remaining events will take place tomorrow, Feb. 26, starting at 11:45 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles. Tomorrow’s events continue as the field events begin at 2 p.m. and the running events start at 4 p.m.


PREVIEW


The 2010 edition of the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship returns to Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho, Feb. 25-27, for the eighth-straight year. Four men’s teams and eight women’s teams will compete for the 2010 championship crown. On the men’s side, Boise State looks to defend its 2009 title, hoping for a second-consecutive and fifth-overall WAC championship. For the women, Louisiana Tech hopes to extend its championship dominance, as a 2010 crown would be the fifth in the last six years.

The championship gets underway on Thursday with the women’s pentathlon and men’s heptathlon, with field event finals and running events taking place on Friday and Saturday.
