Four WAC men's basketball student-athletes have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 8 university men's basketball first team, CoSIDA announced today. Boise State's Kurt Cunningham, Fresno State's Nedeljko Golubovic, Nevada's Luke Babbitt and Utah State's Tyler Newbold each earned the honor.
Cunningham, from Sharpsville, Ind., graduated in the spring of 2009 with a cumulative 3.42 grade point average with a degree in marketing. After graduating from Boise State, he began working on his master's degree in athletic administration and currently holds a 3.73 GPA after his first semester.
Golubovic (of Pjevlja, Serbia) is majoring in Psychology and has earned a cumulative 3.86 grade point average, the highest of honorees along the West Coast, through his five semesters at Fresno State, including three distinctions on the President's List during a trio of perfect 4.0 GPA semesters and five selections to the Dean's List. He is also a two-time Academic All-WAC award winner.
Babbitt holds a 3.51 grade-point average and is majoring in pre-business administration. He leads the Wolf Pack and ranks in the top 25 in the country in both scoring and rebounding this season with 21.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. The preseason pick for Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year this season, Babbitt also ranks fourth in the nation with 14 double-doubles.
Newbold, a junior from Payson, Utah, is majoring in journalism. The two-time Academic All-WAC honoree holds a 3.46 grad point average. Newbold has scored in double-figures 10 times this year and 30 times in his career, including two 20-point games. He has started 83 straight games for USU which is the longest active streak on the team. He currently ranks 12th in the WAC in three-point shooting.
