SIMON NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Idaho’s Adrian Simon has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for March 1-7. This is the first honor of the season for him.
Simon, a senior from Sibiu, Romania, went undefeated in both singles and doubles last week as the Vandals picked up road wins over Montana and Montana State. In singles, he posted straight-sets victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. In doubles, he and partner Lachlan Reed won twice at the No. 1 spot, winning 8-2 over the top team from Montana and 8-6 against Montana State. Idaho is currently ranked No. 66 nationally, the highest ranking in program history. The Vandals have won eight straight matches.
Other nominees included: Fresno State’s Remi Boutillier defeated Andre Feliz of San Diego State to clinch the team victory… Leo Rosenberg of Hawai`i went 3-0 in singles last week ... Utah State’s Nikita Ryashxchenko went undefeated on the week in a pair of wins over College of Idaho.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the March 9 ITA team rankings, the WAC has five teams ranked in the top 75. Fresno State leads the way at No. 22, followed by Hawai’i at No. 41, New Mexico State at No. 58, Boise State at No. 64 and Idaho at No. 66.
Individually, the WAC has two singles players ranked in the March 2 ITA individual rankings. Leading the way at No. 36 is Boise State’s James Meredith, followed by of Tejesvi Veerepalli of Fresno State at No. 110.
In doubles, Fresno State’s Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier are ranked No. 23, while teammates Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby are No. 44.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO
The 2010 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif., where Hawai‘i will look for its third-straight crown. Last year, the Rainbow Warriors knocked off top-seeded Boise State, 4-2.
