Boise State Broncos (15-17, 5-11 WAC)
Boise State ended its season with an 84-60 loss to Utah State in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament ... Daequon Montreal had 16 points and Robert Arnold 14 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos, who shot 38 percent from the field compared to Utah State’s 53 percent ... Greg Graham, the head men’s basketball coach at Boise State the past eight seasons, has been relieved of his duties and put on administrative leave ... Boise State Director of Athletics Gene Bleymaier made the announcement today (March 12) ... Boise State has started a national search to replace Graham.
Fresno State Bulldogs (15-18, 7-9 WAC)
As the Bulldogs’ ended their 87th season by dropping a WAC quarterfinal 74-66 to Louisiana Tech, sophomore small forward Paul George set a school record with a 91 percent season clip at the free throw line (120-132) and ended the year by draining 25 consecutive free throws ... George scored a team-high 22 points to move to 974 career points over two collegiate seasons ... ge also matched his career-high with 11 rebounds for his 15th career double-double and ninth this year ... he added three steals to record the eighth-most steals (64) by any Bulldog in a season ... Fresno State concluded its season with a four-place improvement in the WAC standings, the best since 2002-03 by any conference school.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors (10-20, 3-13 WAC)
Hawai‘i concluded its season with a pair of road losses at Boise State (63-82) and Idaho (69-78) ... against Boise State, Leroy Lutu led UH with a career-high 12 points, while Adhar Mayen added 10 ... Paul Campbell chipped in nine points and nine rebounds for the ’Bows ... at Idaho, Hawai`i lost despite an inspired effort by Roderick Flemings, making his final appearance as a Rainbow Warrior scored a game-high 29 points ... Hawai‘i Athletics Director Jim Donovan announced on March 8 that Bob Nash will not be retained as head basketball coach ... UH has begun a national search for a new head coach.
Idaho Vandals (15-16, 6-10 WAC)
Idaho senior Luciano de Souza scored a career-high 20 points, but the Vandal men couldn’t slow down a red-hot Nevada team in the quarterfinal round of the WAC Tournament and Idaho’s season ended with a 87-71 loss to the Wolf Pack ... with the loss, Idaho finishes the season with a 15-16 overall record, a 6-10 WAC record and sixth-place tie in the conference ... Mac Hopson scored 15 points with six assists, five rebounds, and two steals in his final game as a Vandal ... Shawn Henderson added eight points and a career-high eight rebounds, while freshman Kyle Barone put in seven points with seven boards ... with the loss, Idaho slips to 1-5 all-time at the WAC Tournament, with the one victory being a 50-49 win over San Jose State in 2008.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (23-10, 9-7 WAC)
Louisiana Tech suffered its worst loss of the season in an 85-55 defeat to top-seeded Utah State in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament ... the Bulldogs faced adversity early as three minutes into the contest, senior Magnum Rolle jumped and blocked a layup attempt and when coming down, rolled his left ankle and never returned to the game ... Olu Ashaolu, Gibson and David Jackson each had 10 points to lead the way for Tech ... for the first time since 2006, Louisiana Tech will play in the postseason when they host Southern Miss in the first round of the CIT on Thursday at 7 p.m. ... the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament is in its second season of existence and features 16 teams.
Nevada Wolf Pack (20-12, 11-5 WAC)
Luke Babbitt scored a career-high 33 points for the Wolf Pack, including a pair of free throws that put Nevada ahead 79-78 with 45 seconds left but a shot with 3.8 seconds remaining by NM State gave the Aggies an 80-79 victory over Nevada in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament ... Nevada’s Armon Johnson, who finished with 13 points and 10 assists, missed about a 30-foot desperation shot as time expired ... Nevada will travel to Wichita State on Wednesday to participate in the National Invitation Tournament ... this season marks Nevada’s school-record eighth consecutive postseason invitation and its first appearance in the postseason NIT since 2003 ... the Wolf Pack earned a No. 6 seed in the NIT, while Wichita State is a No. 3 seed.
New Mexico State Aggies (22-11, 11-5 WAC)
New Mexico State won the 2010 WAC Tournament Championship after a 69-63 victory over Utah State ... the Aggies earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament and are making their 18th appearance in school history ... junior guard Jahmar Young was named WAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after a team-high 19 points ... sophomore forward Troy Gillenwater also earned all-tournament team honors following a 15-point showing ... senior guard Jonathan Gibson was also in double-figures with 14 points ... NM State meets No. 11 Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, March 19 in Spokane, Wash. ...the Aggies are a No. 12 seed in the Midwest Regional while the Spartans are a No. 5 seed.
San Jose Spartans (14-17, 6-10 WAC)
With just under 14 minutes remaining in the game, San Jose State University trailed New Mexico State, 50-44 ... then, the Aggies went on their second double-digit rally of the game, a 10-0 run, and went on to a 90-69 win to end the Spartans’ season in the quarterfinal round of the WAC Tournament ... Adrian Oliver led all players with 23 points ... in the process, the San Jose State guard set single season records for most free throws with 188 and most field goal attempts at 526 ... his 699 points for the season were three shy of matching Ricky Berry’s mark of 702 in 1988 ... despite losing their last three games, San Jose State entered the WAC Tournament with their highest seed in nine years.
Utah State Aggies (27-7, 14-2 WAC)
Utah State dropped a 69-63 decision to New Mexico State in the WAC Tournament championship game ... Utah State, who had won 17-straight games, falls to 27-7 on the season with the loss ... Utah State was playing in its fourth WAC Tournament championship game in its five years in the league, but is now just 1-3 in those title contests ... senior guard Jared Quayle led Utah State with a game-high 25 points, while junior forward Tai Wesley recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds despite breaking his nose in the first minute of the game ... USU did receive an at-large bid to play in this year’s NCAA Tournament and will face No. 5 Texas A&M on Friday.
WAC NOTES
WAC NCAA TOURNAMENT RECORD
Current WAC teams are a combined 35-68 in the NCAA Tournament, and Utah State’s 19 NCAA appearances are the most by any current member of the league. With New Mexico State and Utah State both making the tournament this season, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament 20 times in the last 23 years and a WAC team has advanced to at least the second round 10 times in the last 13 years.
FOUR WAC TEAMS HEAD TO NATIONAL POSTSEASON PLAY
Four WAC men’s basketball teams have advanced to national postseason play. New Mexico State and Utah State will travel to Spokane, Wash. to play in the NCAA Tournament’s first round on Friday. Nevada has been invited to the National Invitational Tournament, where it will travel to play Wichita State on Wednesday. Louisiana Tech has been invited to participate in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, where it will host Southern Miss on Thursday.
NEW MEXICO STATE AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
After winning its second WAC Tournament Championship, the New Mexico State men’s basketball team meets No. 11 Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, March 19 in Spokane, Wash. The Aggies are a No. 12 seed (22-11, 11-5 WAC) in the Midwest Regional while the Spartans are a No. 5 seed (24-8, 14-4 Big Ten). NM State is making its 18th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history after winning the 2010 WAC Tournament with a 69-63 victory over Utah State, March 13. Michigan State enters the tournament after a 72-67 overtime loss to Minnesota, March 12. This is the first meeting between the Aggies and Spartans.
UTAH STATE AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Utah State is 6-20 (.231) all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which includes a 4-14 (.222) record in the first round. USU has lost six straight games in the NCAA Tournament and its last win was in the first round of the 2001 tournament when it defeated fifth-seeded Ohio State, 77-68, in overtime. In its last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, USU lost to sixth-seeded Marquette, 58-57, in the first round.
WAC AND THE 12th SEED
Members of the WAC have received the No. 12 seed six times. In those six games, the WAC is 1-6. The lone upset came in 1987 when No. 12 Wyoming upset No. 5 Virginia, 64-60. The current WAC membership is 0-2 as a No. 12 seed. Hawaii had the No. 12 seed in 2001 and lost to No. 5 Syracuse, 79-69, while Utah State had the No. 12 in 2006 and lost to No. 5 Washington, 75-61.
THE WAC AT THE TOURNAMENT
Friday’s game marks the third time that Utah State has represented the WAC at the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies also represented the WAC at the tournament in 2006, where the team earned the 12th seed and dropped a 75-61 decision to Washington and again in 2009 when as the No. 11 seed, lost to No. 6 Marquette 58-57. For New Mexico State, it marks the second time that the Aggies have represented the WAC at the tournament. NM State was the No. 13 seed in 2007 and dropped a 79-67 decision to No. 4 Texas.
RECENT WAC SUCCESS AT NCAA TOURNAMENT
The last WAC team to advance past the first round at the NCAA Tournament is Nevada, who won its first round game in 2007, defeating No. 10 Creighton 77-71 in overtime. Nevada also advanced past the first round as the No. 9 seed in 2005, defeating No. 8 Texas 61-57. Nevada advanced to the “sweet 16” in 2004 as the 10th seed.
NEVADA INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN NIT
Nevada will travel to Wichita State University on Wednesday, March 17 in the National Invitation Tournament. Wednesday’s game will tip off at 7:05 p.m. Central Time (5:05 p.m. Pacific Time) at the 10,506-seat Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. This season marks Nevada’s school-record eighth consecutive postseason invitation and its first appearance in the postseason NIT since 2003. The Wolf Pack earned a No. 6 seed in the NIT, while Wichita State is a No. 3 seed. The winner of Wednesday’s game will take on the winner of a March 17 contest between second-seeded Rhode Island and seventh-seeded Northwestern.
LOUISIANA TECH TO HOST CollegeInsider.Com TOURNAMENT GAME
For the first time since 2006, the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team will play in the postseason when they host Southern Miss in the first round of the CIT on Thursday at 7 p.m. Southern Miss is 20-13 overall and finished sixth in Conference USA with an 8-8 record. The Golden Eagles feature Second-Team all-Conference USA performer Gary Flowers. The junior forward leads the team with 15.0 points 8.3 rebounds. Southern Miss is coached by Larry Eustachy who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Golden Eagle program.
Tech is 23-10 and coming off a semifinals loss to Utah State in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed. This is their first postseason bid since the 2006 NIT. Playing at home should benefit the Bulldogs as they are 11-2 in the Thomas Assembly Center this season. The Golden Eagles are 6-7 on the road this season.
It will be the 63rd meeting between the schools and the first since 2008 when Southern Miss beat LA Tech 80-56 in the Gulf Coast Classic in Biloxi, Miss. Southern Miss leads the overall series 38-24, but Tech has won the last five meetings in the Thomas Assembly Center.
NEW MEXICO STATE WINS WAC TOURNAMENT
New Mexico State defeated Utah State 69-63 to claim the 2010 WAC Tournament title. It marks NM State’s second title and first since 2007. Jahmar Young was named tournament MVP after scoring 19 points in the championship game. Jared Quayle led Utah State with 25 points, while Tai Wesley posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 boards.

The first team is led by Nevada sophomore forward Luke Babbitt who was also voted the WAC’s Player of the Year. Fresno State center Greg Smith becomes the second Bulldog player in team history to earn the WAC’s Freshman of the Year award. Utah State head coach Stew Morrill earned his second Don Haskins Coach of the Year honor by leading the Aggies to a third-straight regular season WAC title. In his 12th year with Utah State, Morrill led the Aggies to a 14-2 conference record.

UTAH STATE WINS THIRD-STRAIGHT WAC REGULAR SEASON TITLE
Utah State’s men’s basketball team claimed its second straight outright Western Athletic Conference regular season championship. Overall, it is the third straight regular season WAC Championship for USU as it shared the league title in 2008 with a 12-4 mark, won the conference outright in 2009 with a 14-2 record, and is currently 13-2 in league play this year with one game remaining. It is also the sixth regular season championship under head coach Stew Morrill as the Aggies won Big West Conference titles in 2000, 2002 and 2004, and the 15th all-time in school history. Utah State’s current run of three straight regular season conference championships is the longest streak in school history as the only other time USU won back-to-back league titles was in 1997 and 1998 when those teams went 12-4 and 13-3 in the Big West Conference.

STEW MORRILL NAMED NABC DISTRICT 6 Co-COACH OF THE YEAR
Utah State men’s basketball coach Stew Morrill continued to receive national attention Friday and was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 6 co-Coach of the Year along with Northern Colorado’s Tad Boyle. Also on Friday, Morrill was named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award for the second straight season. Morrill was also named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association District VIII Coach of the Year in 2009. Morrill has led Utah State to a 27-6 record during the 2009-10 season including its third-straight regular season WAC Championship as USU finished the year with a 14-2 league mark. USU is currently riding a 17-game winning streak, which ranks tied for third in school history, and is the second-longest active winning streak in the nation behind Butler who has won 20 straight.
NEVADA’S BABBITT NAMED ONE OF 30 NAISMITH TROPHY CANDIDATES
Nevada sophomore Luke Babbitt has been named one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith Trophy, honoring the nation’s top player. The top 30 midseason men’s list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists from around the country. The board based its criteria on player performances this season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is the most prestigious national basketball award and is given annually to the men’s college basketball player of the year. This year, the award will be presented at the NCAA Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis.
UTAH STATE WIN STREAK ENDS AT 17
Utah State had its 17-game winning streak snapped on March 13, which was tied with the 2003-04 USU team for the third-longest winning streak in school history.
WAC TEAMS AMONG NATIONAL STATISTICAL LEADERS
As of March 15, teams from the WAC rank in the top-25 in 11 team statistical categories. Individual players rank in the top-25 in eight individual categories. Utah State holds the highest team mark as it leads the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.65. The Aggies also rank second nationally in three-point percentage (41.9) and seventh in free throw percentage (76.3). Individually, Fresno State’s Paul George and Nevada’s Luke Babbitt are tied for fifth nationally in free throw percentage at 90.9 percent. San Jose State’s Adrian Oliver ranks fifth nationally in scoring at 22.5 points per game.
WAC BOASTS THREE OF THE TOP SCORERS IN THE NATION
As of March 15, three players in the WAC rank in the top-22 nationally in scoring. San Jose State’s Adrian Oliver holds the top scoring mark in the league at 22.5 points per game, ranking him fifth nationally. Nevada’s Luke Babbitt averages 22.1 points per contest and ranks eighth nationally while New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young averages 20.5 points per game and ranks 22nd nationally.

The WAC’s RPI stays steady at 10 this week as a conference. The WAC has four teams in the top-78, including Utah State (30), New Mexico State (51), Nevada (73) and Louisiana Tech (78).
WAC WINS THREE OF FOUR BRACKETBUSTERS TELEVISION GAMES
For an eighth-straight year, the WAC is participated in BracketBusters -- a two-day men’s college basketball event pitting NCAA Tournament hopefuls. WAC teams secured four of the 11 televised games and was victourious in three of them. The WAC won three of its four television matches as Louisiana Tech defeated Northeastern 70-67, New Mexico State downed Pacific 84-78 and Utah State defeated Wichita State 68-58.
UTAH STATE’S STEW MORRILL REACHES 500 WINS
Utah State’s Stew Morrill achieved a coaching milestone on Jan. 23 as the Aggies defeated Idaho 60-48 to give Morrill his 500th career victory and become one of just 19 active coaches and just the 73rd coach in Division I history to record 500 career wins. Among his now 512 wins, Morrill has posted a 293-97 mark in 12 seasons at Utah State as he is the school’s all-time winningest coach. He recently tied E. Lowell Romney (1920-41) for the most games coached in school history at 384.

NEVADA’S BABBITT NAMED ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Wolf Pack sophomore forward Luke Babbitt has been named an ESPN the Magazine second-team Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced tonight. Babbitt holds a 3.51 grade-point average and is majoring in pre-business administration. He leads the Wolf Pack and ranks in the top 30 in the country in scoring and rebounding this season. The preseason pick for Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, the Reno native and graduate of Galena High School earned Academic All-WAC honors last year.
SJSU’S OLIVER NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR JAN. 18-24
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected San Jose State guard Adrian Oliver as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 24. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 23 this season.
As the WAC Player of the Week, Oliver was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. Oliver had a career-high 39 points in an 87-76 win over Louisiana Tech that ended the Bulldogs’ 10-game winning streak. He followed that up with 22 points in a 93-84 win against New Mexico State. In both games, he played 38 minutes and had five assists. For the week, Oliver shot 54.3 percent from the field (19-for-35) and was 19-for-20 from the free-throw line. He also averaged three rebounds and two steals in the two San Jose State wins. Oliver now has four straight 20-plus point efforts and the Spartans boast their best conference record (4-3) since 1999.
NEVADA’S JOHNSON AND IDAHO’S HOPSON CANDIDATES FOR COUSY AWARD
Idaho senior guard Mac Hopson and Nevada junior guard Armon Johnson ire among the candidates for the 2010 Bob Cousy Award presented by The Hartford Financial Services, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts announced. The annual award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes college basketball’s top point guard. 73 candidates have been nominated for the 2010 award. Nominations were solicited from all Division I, II and III schools across the country. A 2009 first-team All-WAC selection, Johnson is averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 assists per game this season. Hopson, also a first team all-WAC selection in 2009, is averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 assists per game this year. Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included: Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph’s), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), DJ Augustin (Texas) and Ty Lawson (North Carolina). IDAHO, UTAH STATE AND FRESNO STATE PICK UP WINS AGAINST TEAMS FROM LAST YEAR’S NCAA TOURNAMENT
Idaho opened its season with two of its first three games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. Idaho beat both Utah and North Dakota State on their home floors and started the season 2-1. Utah State downed Brigham Young 71-61 on Dec. 2, while Fresno State defeated North Dakota State 68-54 on Dec. 19.
UTAH STATE’S JARED QUAYLE CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Utah State’s Jared Quayle has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2009-10 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year. It is the third year in a row that a Utah State player has been named one of 30 national candidates for this award as Jaycee Carroll was selected as one of 10 finalists in 2008 and Gary Wilkinson was one of 30 candidates in 2009. Quayle, a 6-1 senior guard from Perry, Utah is the only player from the state of Utah and the only player from the Western Athletic Conference to be selected for this award.
