Verizon Wireless WAC Men' Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER – Louisiana Tech’s Demonte Willis and Utah State’s Joe Canavan have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 15-21.

Willis, a sophomore from Homer, La. (Homer HS), won the 400 meters with a time of 48.07 seconds at the Jim Mize Invitational on Saturday. The mark is first in the WAC this season. Willis also ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay team that won that race with a time of 3:15.05, also the fastest time among WAC schools this season. The redshirt sophomore’s performance helped the Bulldogs defeat Southeastern Louisiana and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a double dual meet scored in Ruston, La.

Canavan, a sophomore from Palm Desert, Calif. (Palm Desert HS), won the shot put with a throw of 18.00 meters (59 feet, 00.75 inches) at the Willie Williams Invitational over the weekend. Canavan’s mark is first in the WAC by over three feet and sixth in the nation this season.

Other track nominees included: Fresno State’s Kendrick Young and Utah State’s Nick Karren.

Other field nominees included: Fresno State’s Tim Greene and Louisiana Tech’s Larry Jones.
