BOISE STATE’S MEGALE NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Boise State’s Lauren Megale has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for March 22-28. This is her first honor of the season and the third of her career.
A junior from Boise, Idaho, Megale finished the weekend with a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles and a 3-0 mark at No. 1 doubles as the Broncos went 2-1 last week, defeating Oregon and UC Irvine and dropping a 4-3 match at UNLV. The highlight of the week for Megale was an upset over No. 103 Jana Albers of UNLV on Sunday, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. In doubles, she teamed with Pichittra Thongdach to defeat all three opponents.
Other nominees included: Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova went 1-1 at No. 1 singles, including an upset of No. 29 Marta Lesniak of SMU, and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles on the week … Alyssa Nafarrete of Hawai’i picked up a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles and won at No. 2 doubles vs. Chaminade … Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 0-2 at No. 1 doubles last week.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the March 30 ITA team rankings, Boise State is ranked at No. 45, while Nevada entered the rankings at No. 65.
Fresno State’s Anastasia Petukhova came in at No. 12 in the March 30 ITA individual rankings, while Boise State’s Pichittra Thongdach is No. 38, Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk is No. 96 and Idaho’s Gabriela Niculescu is No. 99.
In doubles, Boise State’s Lauren Megale and Thongdach are ranked No. 38.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO
The 2010 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs, winners of eight-straight WAC Tournament titles, defeated No. 2-seed Boise State, 4-3, in a match that came down to the last point to claim last year’s title.
