Verizon WAC Tennis Players of the Week Announced

DENVER – Boise State’s James Meredith and Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for April 5-11. This is the second honor of the season and third of his career for Meredith and the first honor of the season and second of her career for Mizyuk.

Meredith, a sophomore from Christchurch, New Zealand, went a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Boise State picked up a pair of WAC wins last weekend. He picked up straight-sets victories over New Mexico State's Jim Brouleau and Nevada's Laurent Garcin. In doubles, Meredith teamed with Jeff Mullen to defeat Brouleau and Orlando Superlano of NM State and Garcin and Augy Myard of Nevada. Meredith is now 4-0 in singles against WAC opponents and is 8-1 in his last 10 matches, with one match unfinished.

Mizyuk, a senior from Volgodonsk, Russia, helped the Wolf Pack to a 3-0 record in WAC matches last week by going a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles. She picked victories at No. 1 singles over Idaho’s Gabriela Niculescu, Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova and Utah State’s Hailey Swenson. At No. 1 doubles, she teamed with Sophie Stevens to pick up wins over Kucerkova and Laura Pola of Fresno State and Swenson and Jaclyn West of Utah State.

Other male nominees included: Fresno State’s Tejesvi Veerepalli went 2-0 at No. 4 singles and 1-0 at No. 3 doubles last week … Stanislav Glukhov of Idaho went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles on the week ... Nevada’s Wessim Derbel went a combined 3-1 on the week … Amit Maharaj of Utah State won the sole Aggie point at No. 4 singles in a loss at Weber State last week.

Other female nominees included: Boise State’s Bianca Jochimsen went 3-0 at No. 3 singles and 2-0 at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles last week … Melissa McQueen of Fresno State went 3-0 at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and 2-1 at No. 2 doubles on the week … Idaho’s Alexandra Ulesanu went 2-0 at No. 4 singles and 1-1 at No. 3 doubles last week ... Vivian ten Dolle of Louisiana Tech went 2-1 at No. 1 singles and 1-2 at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles as the Techsters picked up their first-ever WAC win … New Mexico State’s Sophia Marks went 1-2 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 2 doubles last week … Jaclyn West of Utah State went 3-1 at No. 2 singles and 1-3 at No. 1 doubles on the week.
