NEVADA’S MIZYUK NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for April 5-11. This is her first honor of the season and second of her career.
A senior from Volgodonsk, Russia, Mizyuk helped the Wolf Pack to a 3-0 record in WAC matches last week by going a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles. She picked victories at No. 1 singles over Idaho’s Gabriela Niculescu, Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova and Utah State’s Hailey Swenson. At No. 1 doubles, she teamed with Sophie Stevens to pick up wins over Kucerkova and Laura Pola of Fresno State and Swenson and Jaclyn West of Utah State.
Other nominees included: Boise State’s Bianca Jochimsen went 3-0 at No. 3 singles and 2-0 at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles last week … Melissa McQueen of Fresno State went 3-0 at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and 2-1 at No. 2 doubles on the week … Idaho’s Alexandra Ulesanu went 2-0 at No. 4 singles and 1-1 at No. 3 doubles last week ... Vivian ten Dolle of Louisiana Tech went 2-1 at No. 1 singles and 1-2 at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles as the Techsters picked up their first-ever WAC win … New Mexico State’s Sophia Marks went 1-2 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 2 doubles last week … Jaclyn West of Utah State went 3-1 at No. 2 singles and 1-3 at No. 1 doubles on the week.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the April 13 ITA team rankings, Boise State is ranked at No. 44, while Nevada is No. 68.
Fresno State’s Anastasia Petukhova came in at No. 14 in the April 13 ITA individual rankings, while Boise State’s Pichittra Thongdach is No. 46, Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk is No. 94 and Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova is No. 117.
In doubles, Boise State’s Lauren Megale and Thongdach are ranked No. 55.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO
The 2010 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs, winners of eight-straight WAC Tournament titles, defeated No. 2-seed Boise State, 4-3, in a match that came down to the last point to claim last year’s title.
