PROVO, Utah - Senior Jared Becher and junior Scott Smith finished in first and second place to take the University of Nevada men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the PING Cougar Classic. BYU played host to the 18-team tournament as it was held at the par 72, 6,902-yard Riverside Country Club, Friday-Saturday, April 23-24.
Nevada carded nine-under 279 in Saturday's round to finish in fourth place and mark the team's lowest round of the 2010 season. The Wolf Pack ended with a three round total of five-under 859 (291-289-279). Colorado State took first place at 14-under 805 (285-284-281), a two-stroke advantage over BYU in second place at 12-under 852 (293-297-280). UNLV beat the Wolf Pack by one stroke to finish in third place at six-under 858 (293-287-278) and Augusta State rounded out the top five carding four-under 860 (295-283-282).
The Wolf Pack's Becher took the individual win after carding three rounds below par and finishing at ten-under 206 (71-66-69). Becher shot six-under 66 in Friday's second to match his season and career best low round. Junior Scott Smith finished tied for second place and carded a season best five-under 67 in the third round. Smith (69-72-67) tied with Augusta State's Patrick Reed (67-68-73) at eight-under 208. Senior Ryan Hallisey tied for 43rd at five-over 221 (75-75-71) while seniors Travis Esway (78-82-72=232) and Taylor Coffman (76-76-81=233) rounded out the Pack in 85th and 86th, respectively.
