Verizon WAC Women' Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER – Utah State’s Erin Stratton and Boise State’s Eleni Kafourou have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 19-25.

Stratton, a senior from Aurora, Colo. (Smoky Hill HS), finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:24.08 at the Cal Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. last weekend. Stratton’s time is the second-best in the WAC, ranks 10th in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is 17th in the NCAA this season.

Kafourou, a senior from Athens, Greece (Ninth Lykeium of Pireas HS), set season-best and WAC-leading marks in both the long jump and the triple jump at the BYU Robinson Invitational on Friday and Saturday, winning both events. Kafourou’s mark of 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11.75 inches) in the long jump is sixth in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and ranks eighth in the nation. The senior’s leap of 13.04m (42-9.50) in the triple jump is tied for fifth in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is tied for 14th in the nation. Kafourou also competed in the high jump for the first time this season, placing seventh with a mark of 1.63m (5-4.25).

Other track nominees included: Boise State’s Racquel Jones, Idaho’s Lauren Schaffer, Louisiana Tech’s Jesseka Jones and Nevada’s Samantha Diaz.

Other field nominees included: Fresno State’s J’Quyra Moncor-Blue, Idaho’s Mykael Bothum, Louisiana Tech’s Phelecia Reynolds, Nevada’s La Tijera Avery and Utah State’s Sonia Grabowska.
