RUSTON, La. - On a day that included a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay, Boise State’s men and Idaho's women are in the lead entering the final day of the WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex on the campus of Louisiana Tech. For the men, with seven events complete, Boise State is leading with 75 points, followed by Utah State in second place with 60 points. Idaho is in third with 34 points, followed closely by Fresno State in fourth place with 30 points. Host Louisiana Tech is in fifth place with 18 points. On the women’s side, Idaho is in first place with 83 points. Louisiana Tech and Utah State are tied for second with 38 points. Boise State is in fourth place with 30 points, New Mexico State is in fifth with 26 points, and Nevada is in sixth place with 25 points. Hawai`i (18) and Fresno State (15) follow in seventh and eighth places, respectively.


For the men, Utah State senior Steve Strickland won his third consecutive 3,000-meter steeplechase WAC championship title, finishing in 9:08.13. Boise State junior Kevin Higgs ran a season-best 9:12.81 to take second, and Utah State sophomore Daniel Howell nabbed third place with a time of 9:13.35.

In the men’s hammer throw, Idaho senior James Rogan posted a mark of 66.24 meters (217 feet, four inches), to take home the gold. Fresno State senior Tim Green grabbed silver for the second year in a row, with a season-best toss of 61.00 meters (200-01). Boise State sophomore Alex Nelson picked up the bronze with a throw of 58.77m (192-10).

Boise State swept the top three places in the men’s long jump, with senior Zacharias Arnos taking the title with a mark of 7.68m (25-02.50). Fellow Broncos Eetu Viitala and Kurt Felix took second and third places, posting season-best marks of 7.53m (24-08.50) and 7.17m (23-06.25), respectively.

In the men’s discus, Louisiana Tech junior Larry Jones won his second consecutive WAC title in the event, with a mark of 55.45m (181-11). Boise State sophomore Chase Sexton placed second with a season-best toss of 51.36m (168-06), and Louisiana Tech senior Shaun Haughton came in third with a mark of 51.06m (167-06).

In the men’s high jump, Utah State junior Clint Silcock cleared 2.15m (7-00.50) to take home the title. Boise State junior Kurt Felix added to his medal tally, posting a season-best mark of 2.12m (6-11.50) for silver. Utah State senior Parker Casey earned bronze, clearing season-best 2.06m (6-09.00).

During the last men’s event of the evening, the 10,000 meters, lightning in the area prompted the race to be called at the completion of lap 17. Idaho sophomore Markus Geiger placed first (21:38.66), followed by Fresno State junior Paul Zwama (21:43.97) and Utah State junior Brian McKenna (21:50.26) in second and third places, respectively.

In the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter won the WAC championship title, crossing the line in 10:26.18, less than three seconds shy of the meet record set in 2004 by Fresno State’s Kara June (10:23.61). Utah State’s Erin Stratton took second with a time of 10:51.93. New Mexico State freshman Chelsa McDonnell placed third with a time of 11:05.69.

The women’s pole vault was decided on number of attampts, as Idaho senior K.C. Dahlgren claimed the title over Utah State junior Sonia Grabowska after both cleared 3.95m (12-11.50). Grabowska’s mark was a season-best. Boise State junior BreAnna Craig posted a height of 3.80m (12-05.50) to take third place.

Idaho junior Ulrike Hartz picked up her second gold of the meet in the women’s javelin, posting a mark of 49.19m (161-05) for the title. Hartz earned her first title of the meet yesterday, in the heptathlon. Nevada junior Marissa Hammond finished second with a season-best throw of 46.28m (151-10), edging out New Mexico State senior Randi Grimes, who placed third with a toss of 46.26m (151-09).

In the women’s shot put, Idaho senior Mykael Bothum earned the title with a season-best and school-record heave of 16.06m (52-08.25). Fresno State junior Rosario Sanchez posted a season-best mark of 15.87m (52-04.75) for silver, and Louisiana Tech freshman Micarra Vassell claimed bronze with a mark of 14.99 (49-02.25).

In the women’s long jump, Boise State senior Eleni Kafourou recorded a leap of 6.22m (20-05.00) to claim the title. The Louisiana Lady Techsters posted a pair of season-bests to round out the podium. Techster Chelsea Hayes earned second place with a season-best mark of 6.17m (20-03.00), followed closely by fellow junior Quatisha Williams in third with a season-best jump of 6.15m (20-02.25).
     
The final event of the evening, the women’s 10,000 meters, came after a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay. Idaho senior Allix Lee-Painter crossed the finish line first with a time of 36:16.67. New Mexico State senior Ingrid Flores came in second in 36:52.44, and Utah State sophomore Kim Quinn nabbed third place with a time of 37:07.00.

Tomorrow’s field events begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the women’s hammer throw and the men’s pole vault, while the running event finals starting at 5 p.m. (CT) with the men’s 4x100-meter relay.
