RUSTON, La. - With the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon multi-events in the books, Idaho’s women and Fresno State’s and Boise State’s men are in the lead after day two of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. For the women, Idaho leads with 19 points, followed by host Louisiana Tech with eight points and Hawai`i with five points. Nevada is in fourth place with four points, New Mexico State is fifth with two points, and Utah State is in sixth place with one point. On the men’s side, Fresno State and Boise State are tied for the lead with 10 points each. Utah State is in third place with nine points, followed by Idaho in fourth with two points.

The day began with the conclusion of the women’s heptathlon and the men’s decathlon. After completing four of the seven heptathlon events on Wednesday, May 12, Idaho junior Ulrike Hartz was leading with 3,263 points. Hartz led two of the remaining three events to hold on to capture the heptathlon title with 5,601 points, which is currently ranked fifth in the nation. Along the way, Ulrike shattered the Idaho javelin record, posting a mark of 168 feet, nine inches (51.45 meters), which is currently ranked ninth in the nation. The Vandal junior also recorded the highest point total by a WAC heptathlon champion since 1997. Louisiana Tech sophomore Jesseka Jones finished second with a total of 4,969 points, also setting a school record in the event. Idaho senior Lindsay Goodman finished third with 4,924 points, moving up two postitions from yesterday’s fifth place after the first four events.

For the men, it was a trio of juniors with season-best marks as Boise State’s Kurt Felix held on to day one’s lead and won the decathlon with 7,412 points. Winning five of the ten events to grab the title, Felix’s point total currently ranks 14th in the nation, and is the most by a WAC decathlon champion since 1996. Utah State’s Philip Noble maintained his day one position to finish second with 6,828 points. Fresno State’s David Deal moved up one place from yesterday to take third place with 6,743 points.

Tomorrow’s field events begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT) with the women’s pole vault and the men’s hammer throw, while the track events start at 3 p.m. (CT) with the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
