Wilmington, N.C.-On the final day of the NCAA Women's Division I Golf Championships, the San Jose State women's golf team recorded their best score of the four rounds with a 297 at the Country Club of Landfall Pete Dye Course Friday.
After a rough third round on Thursday, Madeleine Ziegert recovered nicely on Friday and shot the team's best score of the day with a 73. Her only birdie of the day came on the par-4 seventh hole as she hit her second shot just above the hole and sank a 10-foot putt for the birdie. Ziegert had her only two bogeys of the round on the par-4 first hole and par-3 13th. Otherwise, she recorded 15 pars on her round.
Katrina Delen-Briones saved her best for last as well, shooting a two-over 74 Friday. She started her round one under after nine holes that included a birdie on the par-3 16th in which her putt curved on the green and slowly dropped in the hole. Delen-Briones added birdies on holes two and six, but had a double bogey on hole four and added three bogeys in three of her final five holes.
Seniors Cristina Corpus and Shraddhanjali Singh finished their Spartan careers Friday afternoon as both shot a 75 in their final round. Corpus' day did not start great as she was five-over par after the first nine holes. However, playing the front nine, Corpus recovered nicely by shooting two-under par including birdies on the par-4 first hole, par-5 fourth hole and par-five sixth hole. She did have a bogey on the par-four fifth, but finished with pars on her final three holes as a Spartan.
"I didn't start today very well, but I am glad I was able to recover in my final nine holes," said Corpus. "I had a wonderful four years at San Jose State in this amazing, long journey. I am grateful for this experience. John and Dana (Dormann) helped me improve my game so much, and I really appreciate all they have done for me. I have grown as a person during these four years."
Singh's round started with three straight pars and a birdie. But a double bogey on hole 14 and a bogey on 17 made her two over after nine holes. One her final nine holes of the tournament, Singh made seven consecutive pars before a bogey on eight and a par on nine to finish her Spartan career.
"I am really proud of my two seniors," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "They were the best two players all week and stepped it up at this tournament and this season. Cristina played solid for us for four years, playing in every tournament. Both of them will be hard to replace and will be sorely missed in this program."
Jody Ho rounded out the Spartan scoring with an 83. Her only birdie of the day came on the par-5 sixth hole.
"We played a lot better day," said Dormann. "The course was playing the easiest today of the four days. The greens were playing softer than the last two days, so there should be a lot of low scores. We redeemed ourselves after the big numbers we put on the scoreboard the past two days.
"We have enjoyed our experience here at the championships and playing with 23 great college teams. Our kids have seen the best in college golf, and I am glad San Jose State was able to return to the championships even though we did not finish where we wanted. I hope we can use this to inspire next year's Spartans and Spartan teams in the future."
