DENVER – Utah State’s Brian McKenna and Idaho’s James Rogan have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 26-May 2.
McKenna, a sophomore from Farmington, Utah (Viewmont HS), broke the Utah State record in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. over the weekend. McKenna posted a time of 29:00.76, which leads the WAC by over 45 seconds in the event this season. The sophomore broke the school record of 29:06.11 previously held by Mike Nielson from 2005. Finishing seventh among collegiate competitors on Saturday, McKenna’s mark ranks 18th in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is 25th in the nation.
Rogan, a senior from Eagle, Idaho (Eagle HS), shattered the Idaho hammer throw record on Saturday at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore. The senior won the event with a personal-best toss of 221 feet, seven inches (67.55 meters) to beat out the second-place finisher by a six-foot margin. The throw leads the WAC by 16.5 feet, ranks third in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is eighth in the nation so far this season.
Other track nominees included: Boise State’s Sawyer Bosch, Fresno State’s Cameron Parker, Idaho’s Josh Dalton and Louisiana Tech’s Kevin Stewart.
