DENVER – Louisiana Tech’s Quanisha Sales and Boise State’s Eleni Kafourou have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 26-May 2.
Sales, a freshman from Nashville, Tenn. (Hillsboro HS), won both the 100 and 200 meters at the Northwestern State Invitational in Natchitoches, La. on Saturday with a pair of WAC-leading times. Sales won the 200m dash with a time of 23.12 seconds, a mark that ranks ninth in the nation this year and second all-time at Louisiana Tech. That mark also set a new facility and meet record at Northwestern State. Sales also won the 100m with a time of 11.51, a mark that ranks fourth all-time at Louisiana Tech.
Kafourou, a senior from Athens, Greece (Ninth Lykeium of Pireas HS), won both the triple jump and long jump at the Idaho-Utah Border Clash in Boise, Idaho over the weekend. Kafourou set a new season-best mark in the triple jump, leaping 43 feet, 2.50 inches (13.17 meters), a mark that leads the WAC, ranks fourth in the NCAA West First Round Championships performance list and is 10th in the nation. She also jumped 20-5.75 (6.24m) to win the long jump, just six inches shy of her WAC-leading jump of the season in the event.
Other track nominees included: Boise State’s Paige Olivetti, Fresno State’s Breeauna Thompson, Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter, Nevada’s Gina Deckard, New Mexico State’s Chelsa McDonnell and Utah State’s Kim Quinn.
Other field nominees included: Fresno State’s Jacqueline Vazquez, Louisiana Tech’s Chelsea Hayes, Nevada’s Alicia Echevarria and Utah State’s Shannon Prince.
