TUCSON, Ariz. - The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper (CBN) released its weekly NCAA Division I Top-30
Baseball Poll and New Mexico State came in at No. 25, Monday, May 3.
NM State has won 10 straight games and has won 24 of its last 27
with a tie coming against Nevada, April 11. The Aggies are sitting in
first place in the Western Athletic Conference at 13-2-1, while they
are 35-12-1 overall this season.
"It's good to be back in the national polls. It keeps us in the
headlines and will help us when regional selection time comes," head
coach Rocky Ward said.
At No. 25 in the CBN poll, the Aggies are ranked ahead of teams such
as Arizona (29-13), Kansas State (30-12), Rice (26-16), Texas State
(28-14) and U.C. Irvine (27-14). NM State was ranked in the CBN Poll
during the week of April 5, when they were ranked 20th
nationwide. The hard-hitting Aggies are also receiving votes in the
USA Today/Coaches Poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association Poll, although the CBN Poll is the oldest college baseball
poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
The Aggies also continue to get national recognition for the numbers
they are putting up this season. According to Boydsworld.com, a
website dedicated to tracking stats nationwide, NM State leads the
nation in 10 offensive categories as of May 3. The Aggies are national
leaders in on-base percentage (.464), slugging percentage (.610), OPS
(1.074), at-bats (1,783), runs (536), hits (646), home runs (96), RBI
(500), total bases (1,088) and walks (326).
NM State needs just four more HR to get to 100 on the year, while
there is a possibility of the team breaking the school record of 119
homers in a season, which was set in 2009. The Aggies continue to play
well as they are on a 10-game win streak after hitting .438 as a team
in the series sweep against LA Tech.
The Aggies host Fresno State at Presley Askew Field starting Friday,
May 7 at 6:05 p.m. (MT). Tickets can be purchased by calling the NM
State box office at 575-646-1420.
