DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference today announced the winner of its annual Commissioner's Cup with this year's honor going to Boise State with 92.25 points. The Broncos ended the year with five WAC championships including regular season titles in football and women's tennis and postseason victories in women's soccer, swimming and diving and women's tennis. Fresno State was second with 83.75 points, while New Mexico State garnered a third place finish.
"Congratulations to Boise State and its entire athletic department for winning the 2009-10 Commissioner's Cup," said WAC Commissioner Karl Benson. "All of the Broncos' teams performed at their best during the season. That hard work and effort by the student-athletes and coaches paid off in winning this award."
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport, and are averaged between a team's regular-season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Teams that do not qualify for a postseason tournament due to a smaller field receive points equal to their regular-season finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams. Affiliate members are not eligible for the Commissioner's Cup, but their standings are still used for determining points.
It is Boise State's second Commissioner's Cup after also winning it following the 2005-06 season. The Broncos were third last year and second the previous two seasons.
"The Commissioner's Cup is a testament to all of our sports, our coaches and our student athletes," said Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier. "It's a great honor that speaks to the breadth of the athletic dept and it couldn't happen without the support of the community, the university, the Bronco Athletic Association and the great job that our coaches and student athletes have done."
On its way to second place, Fresno State won three regular season titles in women's basketball, men's tennis and baseball. New Mexico State finished third with 80.75 points, winning postseason titles in men's basketball and men's golf.
Nevada finished in fourth place with 76.5 points and Utah State was a close fifth with 74 points following a regular season championship in men's basketball and postseason titles in men's cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Hawai'i was sixth with 68.5 points earning both regular and postseason championships in volleyball, men's tennis and softball while adding a postseason title in baseball.
