Boise State Broncos (1-1, 0-0 WAC)
Boise State opened the 2010 campaign with a road split dropping a 2-0 decision to Oregon before rebounding to take a 2-1 victory at Portland State ... at Oregon junior keeper Liz Ruiz made 10 saves on 12 shots on goal ... in the Portland State match Kati Lucas scored the first goal in the ninth minute followed by Erica Parks’ game-winner in the 37th ... senior Shannon Saxton had a hand in both scores dishing out the assists to extended her school records for points from 74 to 76 and for assists from 16 to 18 ... next up for Boise State is the Air Force Invitational at Colorado Springs, Colo., where they will play the Air Force Falcons and Colorado College.
Fresno State Bulldogs (0-2, 0-0 WAC)
Fresno State opened the season with a pair of losses this past week ... the Bulldogs opened the season on Friday with a 2-0 setback at Pepperdine ... the team then dropped a 1-0 decision at home against Long Beach State on Monday ... in the loss to Pepperdine, preseason All-WAC goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel recorded four saves in the first 45 minutes and added another two saves in the second half ... against Long Beach State, junior Molly Nizzoli led the team with four shots on the night and two of her shots were on goal ... Revel ended the night with two saves ... this week, Fresno State travels to El Paso to play in the UTEP Tournament against Texas State on Sunday.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (1-1, 0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i captured the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout championship after blasting Wagner 4-0 Sunday night at the Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium ... UH, Pacific and Wagner finished with identical 1-1 records during the three-day, round-robin tournament ... however, the Rainbow Wahine won the tie breaker by virtue of goal differential ... Pacific defeated UH 1-0 on Friday, while Wagner took down Pacific by the same score on Saturday night ... Mari Punzal was named MVP of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout … Punzal orchestrated an offense that exploded for four goals and 23 shots against Wagner, including seven shots and the tournament-clinching goal.
Idaho Vandals (0-1, 0-0 WAC)
Idaho fell by a 2-1 margin in their season-opener after a slow opening half ... sophomore Chelsea Small netted her ninth career goal in the second half off a cross from freshman Nitalia Zuniga in the 57th minute, but by that time, Idaho was already down by two scores ... the Vandals gave up a pair of scores in the 29th and 39th minutes to fall into a deep hole before half ... in the second half, the Vandals outshot UCI, 6-5, earned one corner and gave up three, and held steadier possession, but it wasn’t quite enough to earn an equalizing goal ... Small led all players with four shots, all on goal ... junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden made five saves in 90 minutes while allowing two scores.
Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (1-1, 0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech finished the week 1-1 with a 2-1 loss at Stephen F. Austin and a 1-0 win at Lamar ... freshman midfielder Taylor Dennis started in both games and scored both goals for the Lady Techster ... Louisiana Tech opens the 2010 home schedule this weekend starting on Friday with a 5 p.m. CT match against Sam Houston State followed by a 12 p.m. CT meeting with Arkansas State on Sunday.
Nevada Wolf Pack (0-1, 0-0 WAC)
Nevada fell 1-0 to the Saint Mary’s Gaels Friday in their first contest of the year ... Alyssa Doniak scored at 5:03 of the first half for the Gaels with a shot from 30 yards, finding room inside the left post ... the Pack worked to even the game after falling behind, but could not cash in on any of their five shots ... Sarah Voss led the Pack with three shots and goalkeeper Dana Moreno played all 90 minutes, making eight saves ... Erin Smith and Kori Disarufino also attemted shots for Nevada, with Sisarufino finding the target on one occasion.
New Mexico State Aggies (0-0-1, 0-0 WAC)
In the 2010 season opener, the New Mexico State soccer team posted a 1-1 tie against Montana in double overtime, Aug. 22, in Las Cruces, N.M. ... the tie was only the second in school history and first recorded in Aggie Memorial Stadium ... sophomore forward Yolanda McMillion evened the score a 1-1 with the Aggies’ first goal of 2010 when sophomore midfielder/forward Crystal Burns found her in the middle of the box ... defensively, redshirt freshman Mikaela Bitner paced NM State with a game-high five saves in 110 minutes.
San Jose State Spartans (0-2, 0-0 WAC)
San Jose State opened the season with a 0-2-0 record last week ... Kelsey Lord’s late second-half goal was all the offense SJSU was able to produce in a 2-1 season-opening loss to the University of San Francisco ... Lord’s goal was generated by teammate Kayla Santacruz gaining an advantage on two USF (1-0) defenders ... Katie Knopp scored her first goal of the season and gave SJSU a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute against Santa Clara Sunday afternoon ... however, the ninth-ranked Broncos scored two goals in a three-minute span to win 2-1 ... SJSU will host its home-opener on Friday against Sacramento State.
Utah State State Aggies (2-0, 0-0 WAC)
For the second-straight season, Utah State started the season 2-0 ... the Aggies scored six goals in their first two matches, including four against Utah Valley ... Shantel Flanary continued where she left off last season with two goals as the Aggies started the season 2-0 with wins against in-state foes … against Weber State at Rio Tinto Stadium, Flanary scored the first Aggie goal off the season to give USU the 1-0 lead … in USU’s first true home match of the season against Utah Valley, Flanary scored the third goal of the match ... USU will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 29 in its first road match against Idaho State ... the Aggies are looking to break a two-match losing streak agains ISU.
WAC NOTES
UTAH STATE’S FLANARY NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah State’s Shantel Flanary has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 16-22.
Flanary, a junior from Highland, Utah (Lone Peak HS), scored two goals over two games last week as the Aggies started off the season with a 2-0 record with wins over in-state foes Weber State and Utah Valley. Flanary scored the first Utah State goal of the season in a neutral-site 2-1 victory against Weber State on Friday. She also scored a goal in USU’s 4-0 shutout over Utah Valley at home.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State senior forward Shannon Saxton; Hawai‘i senior midfielder/forward Mari Punzal; Idaho sophomore forward Chelsea Small; Louisiana Tech freshman midfielder Taylor Dennis; and New Mexico State sophomore forward Yolanda McMillion.
LOUISIANA TECH’S UPDYKE NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Louisiana Tech’s Caitlin Updyke has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 16-22.
Updyke, a freshman from Broomfield, Colo. (Broomfield HS), was flawless in her first collegiate action on Sunday, helping the Louisiana Tech defense to a 1-0 shutout against Lamar. Updyke held the Cardinals scoreless with six saves in her collegiate debut.
Other defensive nominees included: Boise State junior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz; Hawai‘i junior defender Coleen Burns; New Mexico State freshman goalkeeper Mikaela Bitner; and Utah State defender Natalie Norris.
WEEK ONE HIGHLIGHTS
Utah State opened the season with a perfect 2-0-0 record, defeating in-state rivals Weber State and Utah Valley. The Aggies defeated Weber State on a neutral site at Rio Tinto Stadium, home of MLS team Real Salt Lake. Boise State, Hawai‘i and Louisiana Tech each split their two games last week. Boise State picked up a road win at Portland State, Hawai‘i defeated Wagner, and LA Tech downed Lamar.
2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS
Excluding last year’s WAC representitive Boise State, WAC teams will play in 12 matches against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Six of the matches will played at WAC home sites. Utah State plays four games against non-conference opponents that competed in the NCAA Tournament last year.
