WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Boise State Broncos (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Boise State improved to 2-2 on the year with a weekend road split in Colorado losing on a 106th minute penalty kick at Air Force before regrouping for a 3-1 victory at Colorado College ... four different Broncos scored goals on the weekend Erica Parks, Gabby Garcia, Tylyn Hughes and Katy Oehring ... Boise State allowed three combined goals during over the weekend, two of them were on penalty kicks ... the Broncos will continue their six match road swing to open the season this weekend when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the 2010 Governor’s Cup where they will face Utah Valley University on Friday before playing a big instate rivalry game with Idaho State on Sunday.

Fresno State Bulldogs (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

The Bulldogs won back-to-back games at the 2010 Miner Classic last week ... the ‘Dogs opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over host UTEP ... Laura Dodd provided the game-winning goal lifting the Bulldogs to their first win of the season ... Sunday’s match went into double overtime before Janna Sadowitz scored her first goal of the season giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 win ... Bradlee DeShane set up both game-winning goals earning two assists ... goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel and the defense recorded their first shutout of the year ... Fresno State outshot opponents 33-16 over the weekend and allowed only one goal ... Fresno State heads to Miami this weekend for the FIU Tournament.

Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (1-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i dropped a pair of games last week, falling to Cal Poly and Long Island at the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament ... UH surrendered two first half goals and couldn’t fully recover in a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly ... just 63 seconds after Cal Poly scored its first goal at the 1:50 mark, Mari Punzal responded with UH’s lone goal of the match ... UH then suffered a crushing loss, falling in overtime to Long Island 1-0 ... UH fell to Long Island on a penalty kick 18 seconds into overtime ... this week, Hawai‘i heads out on the road for the first time with matches at San Francisco and California.

Idaho Vandals (1-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Idaho jumped out to a strong start on Friday with a 3-2 win at Northern Colorado … sophomore Megan Lopez scored her first career goal over the weekend, while sophomore Jill Flockhart earned her second career assist … fellow sophomore Erica Hart earned her first career game-winner and third career goal against UNC ... the Vandals then dropped a 2-0 decision at Wyoming on Sunday ... this week, Idaho travels to Pocatello, Idaho to participate in the Governor’s Cup with matches against Idaho State and Utah Valley.

Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (2-2-0, 0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 1-1 this past week with a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State and a 1-0 loss to Arkansas State ... down 1-0 against SHSU, Olivia Lukasewich scored a goal in the 85th minute to tie the game 1-1 before Rachel King scored the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute ... in the two games combined, Tech outshot its opponents 31-8 ... both goals allowed this weekend were on corner kicks as now three of Tech’s four goals allowed have come off of corner kicks ...Tech plays at Grambling State on Wednesday before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff and McNeese State over Labor Day weekend.

Nevada Wolf Pack (0-2-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevadawent 0-1-1 last week, tying Gonzaga 1-1 in double overtime before dropping a 2-1 decision against Iowa State ... both games were played at the University of Montana in Missoula ... against Gonzaga, freshman Aleina Dominguez scored in the 17th minute of the first half on a shot that deflected off the cross bar and off Bulldogs keeper Lauren Ames before crossing the end line ... the goal was the first of the season for the Pack ... against Iowa State, trailing 2-0 at the half, Nevada fought hard to get back in the game, pulling to within one goal when Erin Smith scored from 15 yards out in the 60th minute ... this week, Nevada hosts Montana  and South Dakota State.

New Mexico State Aggies (2-0-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
NM State claimed its second tournament title in two years following a pair of wins over Prairie View A&M, 8-0, and Jacksonville State, 2-1, in the inaugural Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic in Las Cruces ... forward Yolanda McMillion led the Aggies with the first hat trick in school history with three goals in the tournament finale against Prairie View A&M ... NM State posted its first shutout of the season in freshman goalkeeper Erin Wosick’s first career start ... the eight goals also set a school record for goals in a match ... the Aggies won thier first match of the season with a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville State and McMillion scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute. 

San Jose State Spartans (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
In her first-ever home collegiate match, Megan Molina made her time on the pitch memorable with her first San Jose State goal just two minutes into the second half ... however, a free kick by Sacramento State’s Laura Bahno from 30 yards away on the right side gave the Hornets the 2-1 win in the second overtime Friday night at Spartan Stadium ... it was San Jose State’s lone match of the week ... this week, San Jose State travels to play Cal Poly and hosts Cal State Bakersfield.

Utah State State Aggies (2-0-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State went 0-0-1 last week with a 0-0 tied in double-overtime against Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho ... Utah State continues its road trip heading to the Golden State for the first of six matches in California ... USU will take on Long Beach State on Friday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. and San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. ... the Aggies will also take on UC Riverside, LMU as well as WAC opponents Fresno State and San Jose State ... USU is 2-7 against Long Beach State last facing them in 2008 in Logan ... this is the first meeting between the Aggies and the Aztecs of San Diego State.


WAC NOTES

NEW MEXICO STATE’S MCMILLION NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State’s Yolanda McMillion has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 23-29.

McMillion, a sophomore forward from Alamogordo, N.M. (Alamogordo HS), led New Mexico State to the Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic title with the first hat trick in school history. McMillion scored three goals in NM State’s 8-0 victory against Prairie View A&M on Sunday. She also scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville State on Friday. For the week, McMillion posted a team-high four goals, two game-winning goals, and eight points with a .714 shots on goal percentage. She also became the first Aggie in school history to score multiple goals in a single match this past week.

Other offensive nominees included: Boise State freshman midfielder Tylyn Hughes … Fresno State senior midfielder Bradlee DeShane … Idaho sophomore midfielder Jill Flockhart … Louisiana Tech junior forward/defender Olivia Lukasewich … Nevada freshman midfielder Aleina Dominguez … San Jose State freshman midfielder Megan Molina.

UTAH STATE’S MERRILL NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Utah State’s Molli Merrill has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 23-29.

Merrill, a junior goalkeeper from Bountiful, Utah (Bountiful HS), registered her second-straight shutout as the Aggies tied Idaho State, 0-0, in double overtime in Pocatello on Sunday. Merrill had two saves in 110 minutes of action, facing 13 shots, including seven in the first half. It marks the first time in her USU career that she has had back-to-back shutouts. She has now gone 202 minutes without allowing a goal.

Other defensive nominees included: Boise State junior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz … Fresno State senior defender Katie Lee … Idaho junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden … New Mexico State freshman goalkeeper Erin Wosick.

WEEK TWO HIGHLIGHTS
New Mexico State and Utah State now sit atop the WAC’s non-conference overall standings. New Mexico State swept a pair of games last week, defeating Jacksonville State and Prairie View. With the wins, NM State won the Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic title in Las Cruces. NM State’s Yolanda McMillion recorded the first hat trick in school history in the win over Prairie View. Utah State tied Idaho State in double-overtime in Pocatello. Boise State split a pair of games at the Air Force Invitational. Fresno State went a perfect 2-0-0 with wins over UTEP and Texas State at the Miner Classic in El Paso. Louisiana Tech defeated Sam Houston State at home, while Idaho split a pair of games with a win against Northern Colorado.

2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS
Excluding last year’s WAC representitive Boise State, WAC teams will play in 12 matches against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Six of the matches will played at WAC home sites.

COLLEGE CUP
The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
