WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES


Boise State Broncos (3-4-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

Boise State improved to 3-4 on the year with a 2-0 victory over Seattle University in the Broncos home opener on Sunday ... freshman Katy Oehring scored the game-winner in the 20th minute followed by Ashley Walsh’s insurance goal in the 59th as the Broncos defeated NSCAA’s No. 9 ranked West Region team for the first time in the three game series ... next up for Boise State is the Montana Invitational this weekend in Missoula where the Broncos will play their host Montana on Friday followed by a Sunday encounter with the University of New Mexico ... sophomore forward Erica Parks continues to lead Boise State in points with five on two goals and one assist.

Fresno State Bulldogs (4-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs lost a hard fought overtime battle to UC Davis on Sunday afternoon ... the Aggies came back and scored three goals winning the game 3-2 ... Fresno State outshot UC Davis 23-11 and had 16 shots on goal ... Laura Dodd and Nicole Duff scored goals for the Bulldogs ... Molly Nizzoli, Tara Boynton and Bianca Lopez recorded assists in the match ... the ‘Dogs head into the fourth week of play with a 4-3 record ... Fresno State hosts UC Irvine Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.

Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (2-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

Hawai‘i suffered its second straight road defeat with a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary’s last week ... two days after surrendering a program record eight goals in a loss to nationally ranked California, UH looked to rebound against an undefeated Gaels squad ... however, the Rainbow Wahine gave up thee goals and couldn’t counter back as Saint Mary’s moved to a perfect 5-0 on the year ... the Rainbow Wahine now return home to the Waipi‘o Peninsula Soccer Stadium to host the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic, Sept. 17-19 ... UH opens the tournament against Washington State on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m.

Idaho Vandals (4-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Idaho went 1-0 over the weekend with a 2-1 win at South Dakota in which the team tied a school record with 36 shot attempts … in the game, freshman Christina Boddie became the fifth Vandal to score a goal this year and the eighth to score a point so far … after starting the year 1-2, Idaho has won three straight, all on the road … Idaho beat South Dakota by a 2-1 score for the second year in a row.

Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (6-2-0, 0-0 WAC)

Louisiana Tech went 1-0 on week, defeating Texas State 2-1 ... Tech is outscoring their opponents 21-6 while outshooting them 127-61 ... Caitlyn Updyke had another solid day in goal for Tech with 10 saves and leads the WAC in goals against average at 0.67 ... Louisiana Tech takes its four-match winning streak on the road to face Tennessee Tech and Murray State on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Nevada Wolf Pack (3-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC)

Nevada won two games on the road for the first time since mid season last year ... the team’s back-to-back victories is also a first for the pack this year ... Marie Cove’s shutout marks the first full game individual shutout of the year for Nevada ... despite getting out shot 124-79, Nevada is outscoring their opponents 12-11, 12-10 in regular time ... this week, Nevada hosts the Wolf Pack Invitational ... the team will take on Idaho State and Eastern Michigan at the event, which is scheduled for Sept. 16 and 18.

New Mexico State Aggies (3-1-2, 0-0-0 WAC)
In the only match of the week, the NM State soccer team defeated North Dakota, 1-0, Sept. 10 in Las Cruces ... ophomore forward/midfielder Crystal Burns scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of the game ... the Aggie defense also recorded its second shutout of the year with a season-high nine saves ... this week, New Mexico State hosts Alabama A&M before welcoming Lamar ... matches are set for Sept. 17 and Sept. 19.

San Jose State Spartans (2-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
San Jose State split a pair of matches last week ... the Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision to San Diego State before defeating UC Riverside, 3-0 ... against SDSU, San Jose State’s lone score came off a header from junior Amanda Martin, off the corner, inside the near post ... Megan Molina was credited with her first collegiate-career assist ... Shanelle Furner, Lauren Sanchez and Jessica Ingram each tallied goals for the Spartans in the 3-0 shutout against UC Riverside ... Meghan Maiwald was credited with the shutout in goal for SJSU ... this week, San Jose State travels to Reno to play in the Wolf Pack Invitational ... the team will take on Eastern Michigan and Idaho State.

Utah State State Aggies (3-1-3, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State heads to the Golden State for the second time this season when it heads to Loyola Marymount on Sept. 17 and UC Riverside on Sept. 19 ... the Aggies will take on their third-straight regionally-ranked opponent when USU takes on LMU which is ranked fifth in the West Region ... freshman forward Mari Miyashiro scored her first collegiate goal in the Aggies’ win over Cal Poly ... the goal was the golden goal in USU’s overtime win.


WAC NOTES

UTAH STATE’S FLANARY NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Utah State’s Shantel Flanary has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 6-12.

Utah State’s Flanary, a junior forward from Highland, Utah (Lone Peak HS), scored two goals and added an assist as Utah State went 1-0-1 in two home matches last week. In Utah State’s tie against Colorado College, Flanary connected on a penalty kick to tie the score with less than a minute remaining in regulation. In the Aggies’ 3-2 overtime victory over regionally-ranked Cal Poly, Flanary scored USU’s second goal and had an assist on the game-winning goal. This season, Flanary leads the team in points scored with nine with four goals and one assist.

Other offensive nominees included: Boise State freshman forward Katy Oehring … Fresno State junior midfielder Laura Dodd … Idaho sophomore forward Chelsea Small … Nevada senior forward Cristen Drummond … New Mexico State sophomore forward/midfielder Crystal Burns.

NEW MEXICO STATE’S BITNER NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State’s Mikaela Bitner has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 6-12.

Bitner, a freshman goalkeeper from Albuquerque, N.M. (Sandia HS), anchored the NM State defense to a 1-0 shutout victory over North Dakota. Bitner collected her first career shutout in goal behind a season-high nine saves. She also posted a 1.000 save percentage in 90 minutes of play.

Other defensive nominees included: Boise State junior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz … Fresno State junior midfielder Molly Nizzoli … Louisiana Tech freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Updyke … Nevada senior goalkeeper Marie Cove … Utah State junior midfielder Chandra Salmon.

WEEK FOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Nevada went 2-0-0 last week with road wins at Sacramento State and San Francisco. Cristen Drummond scored a pair of goals on the week for the Wolf Pack. Louisiana Tech, Idaho, Boise State, and New Mexico State each went 1-0-0 on the week, while Utah State went 1-0-1. LA Tech downed Texas State 2-1 with Caitlyn Updyke recording 10 saves in goal. Idaho defeated South Dakota 2-1 with Chelsea Small registering a point in her third-straight match. BSU defeated Seattle in its home opener with the help of Katy Oehring, who scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute. NM State got past North Dakota 1-0 with Crystal Burns scoring the game winner. San Jose State picked up a win over UC Riverside and finished 1-1 on the week.

COLLEGE CUP

The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
