WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Boise State Broncos (3-5-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Boise State went 0-1-1 last week with a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Montana before taking a 1-0 setback against New Mexico ... Lindsay Roberts gave BSU the early lead with an eighth minute goal only to see Montana comeback seven minutes later to knot the score, which would be all the scoring in the contest ... BSU battled hard Sunday afternoon, but lost another close contest when New Mexico scored in the 71st minute to hand the Broncos a 1-0 defeat in Missoula, Mont. ... Boise State played nearly the entire match down one player when Brianne Favatella was red carded in the third minute ... BSU will play at Wyoming on Friday, followed by a match at Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 26.
Fresno State Bulldogs (4-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs went 2-0 over the weekend after playing UC Irvine at home and Sacramento State on the road ... the ‘Dogs have an overall record of 4-5 ... Fresno State rocketed off 15 shots in two games last week ... Megan Ashjian, Krissy Looney, Claudia Cardenas, Molly Nizzoli and Nicole Duff all had two shots each ... Kaitlyn Revel had eight saves over the weekend ... the Bulldogs host UCSB on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (2-7-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i suffered a pair of losses last week ... UH dropped a 3-0 decision to Washington State before falling 2-0 to Pepperdine ... Washington State scored a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead into the break, then cruised to victory in the second half ... the Rainbow Wahine—seeing their first action in 11 days and hosting their first home match in nearly three weeks—couldn’t find a rhythm and were shutout for the second straight time ...
Pepperdine scored a goal in each half to take down UH, 2-0, in the Outrigger Hotels Soccer Classic Sunday night ... UH will now head to the mainland for its second road trip of the year with a pair of games in Northern California.
Idaho Vandals (6-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Idaho tied, then broke the team record for single-season win streak last week … Tuesday’s double-OT victory at Weber State was the team’s fourth win in a row, then its 1-0 home-opening win over Gonzaga made it five straight … sophomore Chelsea Small scored her team-leading 13th career goal on Friday against GU, while junior Liz Boyden’s assist against the Zags was the first in Idaho history by a goalkeeper … the team’s 6-2-0 start is the best in school history ... this week, Idaho travels to play at Eastern Washington on Friday before playing at Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (9-2-0, 0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 3-0 on the week with wins at Tennessee Tech and Murray State and a win at home over Jacksonville State ... the Lady Techsters have won seven-straight matches, the second-longest winning streak in school history ... Rachel King continues to lead Tech in goals with nine, while Kiva Gresham leads the team in assists with six ... Gresham had two goals and two assists on the week including the game winner in double overtime at Tennessee Tech ... the Lady Techsters host Nicholls State on Friday before opening WAC play.
Nevada Wolf Pack (5-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevada went 2-0 at home last week with wins over Idaho State and Eastern Michigan in the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno ... in the 2-0 win against Idaho State, Raylene Larot picked up a failed clear by Idaho State and put a shot in goal in the 60th minute to put Nevada up 1-0 ... Nevada added another goal five minutes later when Natalie Ratnavira put away her first of the year to secure the win against ISU ... Nevada defeated Eastern Michigan by a final score of 3-0 on Saturday ... the win was Nevada’s fourth in a row and second straight at home ... Ratnavira scored goals number two and three on the season, while Kori Disarufino scored in the 76th minue to put the game out of reach.
New Mexico State Aggies (5-1-2, 0-0-0 WAC)
New Mexico State went 2-0 last week with an 8-0 win over Alabama A&M and a 4-0 victory over Lamar ... NM State defeated Alabama A&M, 8-0, and tied the school record for goals in a match ... sophomore midfielder/forward Crystal Burns scored a match-high two goals for NM State ... in its final non-conference home match of the season, the New Mexico State soccer team overpowered Lamar, 4-0 ... the Aggies recorded their third consecutive shutout and improved to 5-1-2 while the Cardinals fell to 2-6-0 ... for the second consecutive contest, Burns guided the Aggies with a pair of goals ... this week, NM State travels to play at Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
San Jose State Spartans (4-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
San Jose State won both of its matches last week ... the Spartans defeated Eastern Michigan 2-1 in overtime and then handed Idaho State a 4-1 loss at the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno ... SJSU needed extra-time to put Eastern Michigan away, earning the win in overtime ... with 67 seconds into the first overtime session, freshman Kayla Santacruz put the match to rest with her first goal of the season ... SJSU exploded for a season-best four goals in a 4-1 rout over Idaho State ... the win extended the Spartans’ unbeaten streak to four games ... four different Spartans scored goals against ISU ... San Jose State travels back home, hosting Saint Mary’s on Sunday,
Utah State State Aggies (3-2-4, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State finished last week with a 0-1-1 record ... Utah State dropped a 2-0 decision at Loyola Marymount before tying UC Riverside 0-0 in double-overtime ... both games were on the road ... after a scoreless first half, regionally-ranked Loyola Marymount netted a pair of goals in the second half to top Utah State on Friday ... sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford recorded her first career shutout as the Utah State soccer team tied UC Riverside, 0-0, in double overtime on Sunday ... this was the fifth overtime match this season for the Aggies, which surpasses the four from last season ... the most overtime matches a Utah State soccer team has had in a season is seven in 2006.
WAC NOTES
NEW MEXICO STATE’S BURNS NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
New Mexico State’s Crystal Burns has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 13-19.
Burns, a sophomore forward/midfielder from Overland Park, Kan. (Shattuck St. Mary’s), scored four goals and added three assists as New Mexico State went 2-0 in two home matches last week. Against Alabama A&M, she scored two goals and added an assist. It was her first-ever multiple-goal contest at NM State. In a 4-0 win over Lamar, Burns tallied two goals and two assists, including her second game-winning goal of the season. She posted an impressive .833 shots on goal percentage in the final two non-conference matches of the season and currently leads the team with six assists and 16 points.
Other offensive nominees included: Idaho freshman midfielder Christina Boddie … Louisiana Tech senior forward Kiva Gresham … Nevada junior midfielder/forward Natalie Ratnavira … San Jose State sophomore forward Kelsey Lord.
NEVADA’S COVE NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nevada’s Marie Cove has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 13-19.
Cove, a senior goalkeeper from Garden Grove, Calif. (Pacifica HS), posted her second and third shutouts of the season last week against Idaho State and Eastern Michigan. She tallied eight saves against Idaho State and four save against Eastern Michigan to lower her season goals-against-average to 0.52.
Other defensive nominees included: Idaho junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden … New Mexico State sophomore defender Courtney Irwin … Utah State sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford.
WEEK FIVE HIGHLIGHTS
Five WAC teams went undefeated last week. Louisiana Tech went 3-0, while New Mexico State, San Jose State, Nevada and Idaho each went 2-0. Both Boise State and Utah State went 0-1-1, while Fresno State and Hawai‘i each finished last week with 0-2 marks. For LA Tech, Kiva Gresham made the most of her two shots on goal with two goals scored to go along with two assists in Tech’s 3-0 week. Crystal Burns led NM State to its 2-0 record with four goals and three assists. Kelsey Lord led San Jose State to its 2-0 mark with four goals and two assists. Natalie Ratnavira scored her first three goals of the season as Nevada went 2-0. Liz Boyden earned her second shutout of the season as Idaho defeated Gonzaga 1-0. Boyden also directly contributed to the win with her first career assist – the first in school history by a goalkeeper.

The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
