WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Boise State Broncos (3-7-1, 0-0-0 WAC)

Boise State opens WAC play at Hawai’i on Friday in its lone match of the week ... BSU closed non-conference action at 3-7-1 overall ... The Broncos enter the WAC portion of the schedule this week  coming off a pair of losses last weekend dropping two one-goal decisions, the first 1-0 at Wyoming followed by a dramatic 3-2 loss at Northern Colorado ... against the UNC, Boise State rallied from two goals down to tie the match only to lose on a goal with five seconds remaining in regulation ... in both contests Boise State out shot their opponent in shots on goal but could not finish them with scores as they have now lost three-straight matches.

Fresno State Bulldogs (4-5-1, 0-0-0 WAC)

The Bulldogs played 110 minutes against UC Santa Barbara and ended the game in a 0-0 tie after double overtime periods ... it was the team’s first tie under head coach Brian Zwaschka ... the ‘Dogs improve to 4-5-1 on the season ... Kaitlyn Revel and the defense recorded their second shutout of the season ... Revel had three saves on the night ... Vanessa Gonzalez recorded three shots and had on goal percentage of 1.000 percent ... Megan Ashjian also had three shots against UCSB ... the Bulldogs open WAC play on Thursday, Sept. 30 against San Jose State.

Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (2-8-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 0-1-1 last week with a 9-0 loss at Stanford and a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Pacific ... UH suffered its worst loss in school history with a 9-0 setback to No. 2 Stanford Thursday night at Cagan Stadium ... UH has not scored since a first-half goal by Chelsea Deptula in a loss to Cal on Sept. 5 ... UH posted its second shutout of the season in the 0-0 tie against Pacific ... sophomore goalkeeper Kanani Taaca played a key role in the shutout, recording a career-high nine saves while playing the full 110 minutes ... this week, Hawai‘i opens WAC play at home against Boise State and Idaho.

Idaho Vandals (8-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)

Idaho had a 2-1 record in three games this past week ... Idaho’s win over Eastern Washington on Tuesday gave the Vandals a school-record six-match win streak ... the 2-0 shutout of Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday was Idaho’s third shutout in its last four games ... tthe team’s 8-3-0 record stands as the best start in school history ... four different players scored a goal and three different players earned assists during the week ... this week, Idaho hosts Portland State before opening WAC play at Hawai‘i.

Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (10-2-0, 0-0 WAC)
Louisiana Tech went 1-0 on the week with an 8-0 win over Nicholls State on Friday ... the win extended Tech’s win streak to eight games, its second-longest winning streak in its seven year history ... in the win, freshman Taylor Dennis recorded Tech’s second hat trick of the season and the eighth in Tech history ... junior Rachel King added another goal to her WAC leading total of 10 ... the Lady Techsters open conference play on Friday at home against Utah State before hosting Nevada on Sunday.

Nevada Wolf Pack (5-4-2, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevada went 0-1-1 last week with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against UC Riverside and a 4-2 loss at UC Irvine ... against UC Riverside, Marie Cove posted her fourth straight individual shutout for the Pack, making her the programs all-time leader with nine ... Cove made five saves on 10 Highlander shots ... in the loss to UC Irvine, Danielle Green scored her third goal of the season, while Jill Erickson put in her third goal of the year ...  Green, along with Cristen Drummond, was named to the all-tournament team for the weekend ... this week, Nevada hosts New Mexico State on Friday before traveling to play Louisiana Tech on Sunday.

New Mexico State Aggies (6-2-2, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Aggies concluded non-conference play with a 2-1 win at Wyoming, Sept. 26, and a 1-0 overtime loss at Northern Colorado, Sept. 24 ... sophomore forward/midfielder Crystal Burns gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead on a 30-yard strike with only 10 minutes left in regulation at Wyoming ... the goal was her sixth of the season, and she now has a team-high three game-winning goals in 2010 ... the Aggies tied the match, 1-1, in the 63rd minute on sophomore midfielder/forward Lauren Cope’s first goal of the season ...  NM State’s four-match unbeaten streak was snapped at Northern Colorado. This was the Aggies’ third overtime match of the season and first goal allowed in 429 minutes.

San Jose State Spartans (5-5-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
San Jose State kept Saint Mary’s College scoreless in a 1-0 victory on Sunday night, keeping their unbeaten streak at four ... in a shooting frenzy, the Spartans’ game-winning goal came in the 80th minute, and came off the foot of Sophomore Kelsey Lord ... Spartan goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald launched through the air, making a fabulous save with three minutes remaining in the game, robbing the Gaels of the equalizer ... the Spartans controlled possession and shots in the game holding a 21-10 advantage, with fifteen coming in the second ... the SJSU win ends a two-game winning streak for Saint Mary’s in the series and the Spartans climb to .500 for the season at 5-5.

Utah State State Aggies (3-4-4, 0-0-0 WAC)

Utah State lost a pair of matches against in-state rivals this past week ... Utah State dropped a 2-1 decision at Utah before falling 3-0 to BYU at home ... against Utah, Utah State tied the score in the 54th minute of the second half when freshman Kendra Pemberton delivered a ball from the right corner of the field to the foot of senior forward Lauren Hansen ... the goal was Hansen’s fourth of the season and 29th of her Utah State career ... Hansen is now three goals from tying Brigid Turner (1999-2002) for third all-time in goals scored ... Utah State opens WAC play this week on the road at LA Tech and NM State.


WAC NOTES

LOUISIANA TECH’S DENNIS NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Louisiana Tech’s Taylor Dennis has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 20-26.

Dennis, a freshman forward from Albuquerque, N.M. (Highland HS), became the sixth Lady Techster in school history to record a hat trick with three goals, all in the second half, in Louisiana Tech’s 8-0 victory over Nicholls State. The freshman forward is the second LA Tech player to score three goals in a single game this season. Dennis’ six points in the victory extends Louisiana Tech’s win streak to eight games, the second-longest streak in Tech’s seven year history.

Other offensive nominees included: Boise State freshman midfielder Katy Oehring … Idaho sophomore midfielder Jill Flockhart … Nevada freshman Danielle Green … New Mexico State sophomore forward/midfielder Crystal Burns.

SAN JOSE STATE’S MAIWALD NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

San Jose State’s Meghan Maiwald has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 20-26.

Maiwald, a junior goalkeeper from Santa Clara, Calif. (Santa Barbara CC), completed her second shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary’s this past week. Maiwald registered five saves, including a tough stop with just three minutes remaining in the match. Maiwald has played every minute of San Jose State’s 10 matches this season and holds a current four-game unbeaten streak.

Other defensive nominees included: Fresno State senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel … Idaho sophomore midfielder Amber Pimley … Nevada senior goalkeeper Marie Cove … New Mexico State freshman goalkeeper Mikaela Bitner.

WEEK SIX HIGHLIGHTS
Louisiana Tech went 1-0-0 last week, defeating Nicholls State 8-0. Taylor Dennis recorded the school’s sixth hat trick in the victory. San Jose State also went 1-0-0 with a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary’s. Kelsey Lord scored the game-winner for San Jose State in the win. Idaho picked up wins over Eastern Washington and Cal State Bakersfield last week, while taking a loss to Seattle. Erica Hart and Jill Flockhart each had a goal and an assist on the week for the Vandals. New Mexico State went 1-1 with a 2-1 road win over Wyoming.

2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS
Excluding last year’s WAC representitive Boise State, WAC teams played in 11 matches against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Six of the matches were played at WAC home sites. WAC teams combined for a  2-6-3 record in thos matches.

COLLEGE CUP

The 29th Annual Women’s College Cup will be held Dec. 3 and 5, 2010, in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Soccer Park. Last season, the WAC had one team compete in postseason play with Boise State falling in the first round to UCLA. The following is a list of sites and dates for the 2010 NCAA Tournament:
