Brittany Hewitt broke the Hawai'i rally-scoring record, hitting .917 with 11 kills, as No. 6 Hawai‘i swept through New Mexico State 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14 in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU at the Pan American Center Wednesday. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine improve to 13-1 on the year and 3-0 in the WAC. The Aggies drop to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Hawai'i out-hit NM State .383 to .078 and out-blocked the Aggies 7-0. The Rainbow Wahine also had more kills (41-29), assists (39-29) and digs (48-27) than New Mexico State.
Hewitt, who was perfect until the last few points of the match, posted 11 kills on 12 swings, adding five blocks and one ace. She broke Victoria Prince’s rally-scoring record of .867 (vs. SMU on Nov. 19, 2004), while falling one attempt short of becoming just the second UH player ever to have a perfect hitting night with at least 10 attempts. Chanteal Satele hit .474 with 11 kills, six digs and five blocks. Kanani Danielson added nine kills and 11 digs, while Elizabeth Kaaihue had a match-high 16 digs.
The Aggies were led by Kayleigh Giddens, who finished with 12 kills.
Boise State 3, Idaho 2
Boise State defeated instate rival Idaho 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 19-25, 15-10) in front of 1,489 fans Wednesday. With the win, the Broncos improves to 14-3 overall and 2-1 in the WAC. The Vandals fall to 6-8 on the year and 1-2 in WAC play.
Boise State edged Idaho in hitting percentage on the night (.185 to .174) and also had more kills (65-58), assists (58-54) and service aces (4-2). Idaho won the blocking battle 20.5-13 and tallied more digs (70-58).
Alisha Young led the Broncos with a match-high 21 kills, while Sadie Maughan added 14 kills and 10 blocks for her first double-double of the season. Breann Nesselhuf also posted a double-double of 53 assists and 10 digs.
Idaho was led by Allison Walker, who tallied 16 kills and 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. Kelsey Taylor added 11 kills and a match-high 11 blocks, while Cassie Hamilton posted a match-high 25 digs.
