Verizon WAC Soccer Players of the Week Announced

DENVER - Fresno State's Callie Hancock and San Jose State's Meghan Maiwald have been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of October 17-23.

Hancock, a junior from Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield HS), helped Fresno State to an unbeaten weekend with three goals in two games.  Her two goals against New Mexico State secured the tie, and she scored the insurance goal against Louisiana Tech. She finished the weekend with a .714 SOG percentage, having played a full 200 minutes on the pitch. Hancock set a new career-high with 11 goals on the season. She currently leads the WAC in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. Of the last eight goals scored by Fresno State, Hancock has seven of them, including four-of-six goals for the Bulldogs during conference play.

Maiwald, a senior from Santa Barbara, Calif. (Santa Barbara CC), made 13 saves and ended the week with a scoreless streak of 137 minutes, 17 seconds, including a solo shutout of Louisiana Tech Sunday on Senior Day She led the Spartans to two WAC wins, helping the team secure a place in the WAC Soccer Championship. Maiwald made nine saves against the Louisiana Tech on Sunday, and had four against New Mexico State on Friday, including a critical stop in double overtime that extended the game, which the Spartans would later in the last second of overtime.

New Mexico State forward Layla Todd scored the game-tying goal vs. Fresno State ... San Jose State forward Kelsey Lord had two goals and set the SJSU career record for assists ... Utah State midfielder Jennifer Flynn scored two goals, including the game-winner, vs. Idaho.

Other defensive nominees included: Fresno State defender Lauren Lindstrom helped shutout Louisiana Tech and scored the game-winning goal ... Idaho defender Chelsie Breen helped limit chances on Idaho's emergency keeper ... Nevada defender Annabelle Allen tied the Nevada career record for starts made, with her 77th ... New Mexico State goalkeeper Erin Wosick made nine saves against Fresno to secure a tie ... Utah State goaltender Molli Merrill picked up a shutout vs. Idaho.
