Stateline, Nev. -- The seventh-ranked San Jose State University men's golf closed a ten-stroke gap in the final 18 holes to win the Wolf Pack Classic and notch their third consecutive victory in as many tournaments this season.
Entering the day trailing Nevada by ten strokes, the Spartans shot a two-under 286 in the final round making their 54-hole total 881 (+17), five strokes ahead of the second place Wolf Pack.
It is the first time in over twenty years since the San Jose State men's golf team has won three tournaments in a season, nonetheless three in a row.
The Spartans were fueled by senior Jay Myers who fired a final-round 70 on the 7,445-yard par 72 Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in route to his first career individual win. Myers shot 72-73-70-215 (-1) and was the only individual in the field of 81 to finish in red figures. He topped Nevada's Brian Knoll by two strokes for the victory.
Myers and teammate Justin Estrada were two of four players in the field to shoot the low score of 70 on the final 18 holes. Estrada finished the tournament with a six-over par 222 and in a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Daniel Semmler also finished in the top ten individually. He shot a three-over par 74 in the final round and a 221 (+5) for the tournament putting him in a tie for tenth.
Matthew Hovan put up a level-par 72 on the final 18 to shoot 222 (+7) for the tournament and finished in a tie for 15th while Christopher Lang rounded out the Spartans' five in a tie for 60th at 233 (+17).
San Jose State and the University of San Diego were the only two schools to shoot under par as a team on a cold and windy final day at the Wolf Pack Classic.
The Spartans topped Western Athletic Conference foes: Nevada by five strokes, Fresno State by 29 strokes and Hawai'i by 36 strokes.
San Jose State men's golf will be back to action on October 17-18 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
