VERIZON ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
San Jose State's Kirsten Trammell and Nevada's Grace Huang have been named the Verizon WAC Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively, for the week of Oct. 24-30.
Trammell, a senior from Goodyear, Ariz. (Xavier College Prep), won six events over two meets last week, swimming some of her top times personally and ranking nationally, as she helped lead San Jose State to a 2-0 record with dual meet wins over UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. Against UC Santa Cruz, Trammell won four events as she was part of two winning relays (200 medley and 200 freestyle). She also turned in victories in the 200 backstroke and a personal-best 58.67 in the 100 butterfly.
Against UC Davis, Trammell won the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best 1:03.31. The time was a pool record for the SJSU Aquatics Center and ranks 25th nationally and first in the WAC. She also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay, which swam a pool record 1:43.16, a time that ranks first in the WAC and 16th nationally. Trammell was also second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.70 (second in the WAC).
Huang, a sophomore from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan (Jhong Jheng HS), was the only competitor to score more than 300 points in the one-meter and three-meter dives against Fresno State this past week. Huang recorded scores of 340.20 and 309.15, respectively in those events. Her first place finishes in both events earned Nevada a total of 19 points.

Fresno State Bulldogs (1-1)
Fresno State lost to conference-foe Nevada 158.5-141.5 on Saturday to fall to 1-1 on the season ... sophomore diver Hannah Prigge scored a 295.73 on the 3-meter dive, breaking the eight-year-old Fresno State school record, previously held by Ashleigh Raley's 288.15 ... the Bulldogs won both the 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter medley relays ... senior Heidi Gjoen picked up two wins in the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke ... the Bulldog swimmers will travel to Stockton, Calif. on Friday to compete at University of the Pacific and the Fresno State divers will compete at the USC Diving Invite in Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday and Saturday.
Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (0-0)
Hawai'i was off this week ... UH began the season with a third-place finish at the George Haines Invitational on Oct. 14-15 ... the Rainbow Wahine scored 198 points, topping one WAC foe, Nevada, but falling behind another, San Jose State ... senior Christa Prior finished first in the 100-meter backstroke, while junior Rachel Cote came in fourth ... senior diver Daniella Nero finished second in the 1-meter springboard and grabbed third place in the 3-meter diving competition ... junior Taylor Ritenburg and senior Valerie Pagett finished No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the 100-meter breaststroke ... Hawai'i returns to action this week, hosting the Sunshine Diving Invite on Saturday and Sunday.
Idaho Vandals (1-2)
Idaho was off last week ... the Vandals travelled to Seattle for a double-dual meet on Oct. 22, defeating Seattle 159-103 and falling to UC Davis 169.5-92.5 ... freshman Rachel Millet won the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter freestyle and 500-meter freestyle ... her times in the 100-meter butterfly (56.66) and 200-meter freestyle (1:52.14) were pool records ... she was named WAC Swimmer of the Week ... freshman Erica Anderson won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:06.71 ... Anderson, Millet and seniors Kelsie Saxe and Calleagh Brown finished second in the 200-meter medley relay ... Idaho is back in action next against conference foe Northern Arizona on Saturday.
Nevada Wolf Pack (2-1)
The Wolf Pack won two meets on the weekend, defeating Pacific _ on Friday and WAC-foe Fresno State 158.5-141.5 on Saturday ... junior Jojo Mi won six events on the weekend, three during each meet ... vs. Fresno State, sophomore Grace Huang was the only competitor to score more than 300 points in the one-meter and three-meter dives, with totals of 340.20 and 309.15, respectively ... her first place finishes in both events earned Nevada a total of 19 points ... the next time the Wolf Pack compete will be at the Wildcat Diving Invitational from Nov. 18-20 ... the whole team will next compete on Dec. 3 at Cal State East Bay.
New Mexico State Aggies (1-2)
The New Mexico State swimming and diving team defeated Northern Colorado, 174-110, in the home opener for its first victory of the season ... freshman Jessica Leggewon the 100-meter breaststroke, the 200-meter backstroke and was a member of the winning 400-medley relay ... senior Carly Smith swept the 1-meter diving competition (241.50) and 3-meter (251.40) spring board ... this is the second time in three meets that Smith has won both events ... the Aggies are in action next at the Houston Cougar Invitational from Nov. 17-19.
North Dakota Fighting Sioux (4-1)
North Dakota picked up two wins during a double-dual at South Dakota State on Friday ... the Fighting Sioux edged the hosts 151-148 and topped Western Illinois 246-47 ... sophomore Kelsey Richels won the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle ... senior Megan Keidel swept the diving events with a mark of 247.25 on the 1-meter and a season-best score of 250.58 on the 3-meter ... the Fighting Sioux off this week ... UND are in action again on Nov. 12 for a quad meet hosted by Northwestern, also featuring Illinois-Chicao and Wyoming.
Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (0-0)
Northern Arizona has yet to compete against another squad, but the Lumberjacks have been busy with intrasquad meets ... sophomore Rachel Palmer set a meet record with a time of 2 minutes, 23.41 seconds in the 200 individual medley and finished second in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 100 breaststroke to win the 2011 NAU Pentathlon on Sept. 23 ... in the annual Blue vs. Gold split-squad meet, swimmers Chalene Dirks-Ryan and Emma Lowther each won two events, as did diver Kristy Ardavanis, to lead the Blue team to a 60-44 win ... the Lumberjacks first action of the season comes against conference-opponent Idaho on Saturday.
San Jose State Spartans (3-1)
The Spartans won two dual meets this week, topping UC Santa Cruz 180-105 on Friday and UC Davis 178-122 on Saturday ... senior Kirsten Trammell won six events over the two meets ... against UC Davis, her 100-meter breaststroke time was 1:03.31, a pool record for the SJSU Aquatics Center and was ranked 25th nationally this season, first in the WAC ... junior diver Amy Kilby won three of the four diving competitions she competed in, set a school record and posted two other top-three all-time scores on the weekend ... the Spartans next competitions will be split squad, as the swimmers head to the Arena Invitational from Nov. 17-19 and the divers travel to the Wildcat Diving Invitational from Nov. 18-20.
