DENVER - Hawai'i's T.J. Kua
and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro have been named the Verizon Western Athletic
Conference Golfers of the Month for October.
Kua, a senior from
Lihue, Kaua'i (Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama), finished in a tie for fourth and
won a title in the two events he competed in October. He opened the month with a tie for fourth
place at the Wolf Pack Classic with a two-over par 218 (75-73-70), just three
strokes behind the winner. He then took
titlist honors at the Kaua'i Invitaitonal with a career-best 14-under par 202
(69-67-66). It was the first individual title
for a Hawai'i golfer since 1992. Kua ended
the month with a WAC-best 70.0-stroke average and carded four of his six rounds
under par.
Mortellaro, a senior
from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mesa Distance Learning), played in three tournaments during
the month and averaged 72.3 strokes over nine rounds. Mortellaro opened with a tie for 21st in the
Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in early October before tying for first at the
Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate with a five-under par 211 (70-70-71) to
help her team to a second place finish.
She then took second place at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, just
two strokes behind the winner, with another five-under 211 (68-68-75).
