Oregon 74, Fresno State 70

EUGENE, Ore. -(FS Media Relations) Fresno State came into Duck Country and ruffled Oregon's feathers all night long, but the exacerbated Ducks held on to clip the Bulldogs 74-70 in an exciting Saturday night non-conference game on the hardwood of Matthew Knight Arena.

"Our effort was terrific, but we talk about basketball being a game of inches and we have to want those inches," first-year Bulldogs head coach Rodney Terry said. "We are right there. However, we never are going to be satisfied with being right there. Our goal is to win games and this one ended up in the loss column."

And the 'Dogs were right there for the duration as the game featured 10 lead changes, 10 ties and an up-tempo, aggressive attack on both ends of the floor by both squads.

Southern Miss 78, Louisiana Tech 62

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -(LT Media Relations) The Louisiana Tech men's basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Southern Miss squad 78-62 Saturday night in front of 2,714 fans at Reed Green Coliseum as senior guard Trevor Gaskins (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored 15 points to pace the Bulldogs.

"We faced a high-level team that was firing on all cylinders tonight," said head coach Michael White. "In the interior, Southern Miss was really good offensively and showed a lot of athleticism on the defensive side of the ball."

Tech took an early 4-2 advantage on a layup from freshman guard Raheem Appleby (Jacksonville, Ark.) that resulted in the Golden Eagles calling a timeout. Afterwards, USM went on a 7-0 run over the next 2:37 to put Tech down 9-4.

Three-point baskets from sophomore guard Cordarius Johnson (Coushatta, La.) and Gaskins the next 1:25 of action gave the Bulldogs a 10-9 advantage with 13:30 left in the first half.

Cal Poly 47, San Jose State 40

San Jose, Calif.-(SJSU Media Relations) It was a tough week for San Jose State when it came to making baskets. The Spartans went the final 14:37 without a hoop losing to Cal Poly, 47-40, in an offensive struggle at The Event Center.

Unlike the Cal game three nights earlier when San Jose State (3-7) had trouble getting open looks at the basket against the Pac-12 Conference preseason favorite, the Spartans were able to set their feet along the perimeter, take good shots inside the paint and drive to the basket with a chance for a positive result. Yet, San Jose State made only 24.4 percent of its field goal tries, slightly better than the 20 percent mark at Cal.
