Nevada 78, Portland 60


RENO, Nev. (AP) - Dario Hunt had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Nevada over Portland 78-60 on Thursday.

Olek Czyz had 15 points, Jerry Evans Jr. 11 and Malik Story 10 for the Wolf Pack (9-3), who won their sixth consecutive game.

Kevin Bailey scored 15 points and Tim Douglas had 12 for the Pilots (3-10), who have lost six straight.

Nevada never trailed in the game. With a 12-8 lead, the Wolf Pack went on a 22-0 run to go up 34-8 with 8:27 left in the first half.

Utah State 81, Kent State 62


LOGAN, Utah
– (USU Media Relations) Junior forward Kyisean Reed scored a career-high 27 points and sophomore guard Preston Medlin added 20 as Utah State rolled to an easy 81-62 home win against KentState here Thursday to claim its own Athletes In Action Classic championship.
 
Medlin, who was 6-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 5-for-7 at the free throw line, added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in earning Most Valuable Player honors. Reed was an amazing 12-of-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line as he was named to the all-tournament team. Reed, who had three dunks in the contest, added four rebounds and a career-high tying two blocked shots.
 
Senior forward Morgan Grim was also named to the all-tournament team for Utah State after recording his second double-double in as many nights as he finished with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

UC Riverside 66, San Jose State 64


Riverside, Calif.--(SJSU Media Relations) Second-chance baskets by UC Riverside guard Kareem Nitoto and forward B.J. Shearry in the final minute gave the Highlanders a 66-64 win over San Jose State in a non-conference men's basketball game.

The two follow-up scores gave UC Riverside (5-7) a 64-59 advantage that was just enough to hold off a San Jose State (4-8) free throw flurry by Keith Shamburger in the final 17.6 seconds. Shamburger led all players with 24 points and made five straight free throws leaving San Jose State trailing, 65-64, with 9.3 seconds to go.

Reserve guard Daymond Cowlah made the first of two free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining. James Kinney's 3-point shot for the win hit the side of the rim leaving the Spartans winless in six road games this season.

Arkansas 77, Louisiana Tech 63



FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -(LT Media Relations) Louisiana Tech fell to Arkansas 77-63 Thursday night at Bud Walton Arena as freshman guard Raheem Appleby (Jacksonville, Ark) scored 23 points, his third straight 20-point game, on 10-of-22 shooting to pace the Bulldogs.

The defeat ends Tech's three-game winning streak as the Bulldogs fall to 7-6 on the year while the Razorbacks improve to 8-3.

The Bulldogs started out hot from the field making six of their first eight shots as they took a 17-6 lead at the 13:41 mark of the first half.

A jumper from Arkansas' Rashad Madden gave the Razorbacks their first lead of the game but a three-pointer from senior guard Trevor Gaskins (Alpharetta, Ga.) on Tech's next possession gave the Bulldogs a 22-20 advantage.

Green Bay 63, Idaho 61


GREEN BAY, Wisc. –(UI Media Relations) Similar game, similar heart-wrenching result for Idaho men’s basketball on Thursday in a 63-61 loss at Green Bay.

Just two days removed from a last-second overtime loss at Wright State, the Vandal men played another tightly-contested, back-and-forth game and couldn’t make the plays they needed to down the stretch. With the loss, Idaho slips to 7-6 on the season, while Green Bay moved to 6-6 overall and 6-0 in home games in 2011.

“I thought our guys gave a heck of an effort,” Idaho head coach Don Verlin said after the game. “We had some executional errors – we turned it over 11 times in the second half and we can’t do that. The other night was free throw shooting, tonight it was turnovers in the second half.”

Auburn 65, Hawai‘i 62



HONOLULU –(UH Media Relations) The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team gave all its guts but got none of the glory in a 65-62 loss to Auburn in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH saw its modest three-game win streak snapped in dropping to 5-5 on the season.
 
With the loss, the Rainbow Warriors were relegated to the tournament's consolation bracket where they will face No. 14 Xavier at 8:30 p.m. Auburn advanced to the tournament semifinals and will meet Long Beach State.
 
UH trailed for the entire game, including by eight points with a little more than two minutes remaining. But  a gritty Rainbow Warrior squad wouldn't quit and seized the lead for the first time with 8.6 second left on a Vander Joaquim bucket, sending an energetic home crowd into a frenzy. However, the Tigers (8-1) raced down the court on the ensuing possession and got a dunk from Rob Chubb with 3.5 seconds to deny UH the comeback win.
