Boise State Defends WAC Swimming & Diving Title
Saturday Results
Boise State University won its second consecutive Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday night at the Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. The Broncos finished the meet with 835 points, followed by Hawaii with 577.  Northern Arizona was third with 535, while San Jose State placed fourth with 499. New Mexico State finished fifth with 405, followed by Nevada (326), Fresno State (276) and Idaho (213).

Boise State junior Amber Boucher earned WAC Swimmer of the Year honors for the second straight season.  Hawai'i senior Emma Friesen was named the WAC Diver of the Year, giving the Rainbow Wahine that award in nine of the last 10 seasons.  It was also the second time Friesen has received the award after winning it in 2009. Boise State head coach Kristin Hill earned the WAC Coach of the Year award, while Mike Brown of Hawai'i was voted Diving Coach of the Year for the sixth year in a row and seventh time in his career.  New Mexico State's Tricia Kiss was awarded Freshman of the Year, the first such award for an Aggie.

In the first race of the night, Nevada's Jiao Jiao Mi won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:35.57.  Northern Arizona's Emma Lowther was second (16:39.56) and Boise State sophomore Jennifer Cahill placed third (16:51.62).

Northern Arizona's Fi Connell repeated as WAC champion in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA provisional time of 1:57.05. Boise State's Denise Green was second with a time of 1:58.74, also a provisonal mark.  New Mexico State's Tricia Kiss took bronze medal honors (2:00.05).

Boise State went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle for the second year in a row as Amber Boucher and Stephanie North swapped finishes from a year ago.  Boucher won with a time 48.33 to set a new pool record while North finished in a time of 48.82.  Hawaii's Maura Barrett was third (49.96).  All three times were NCAA provisional marks.

Hawaii's Taylor Ritenberg won her second event of the meet with a time of 2:11.27 in the 200 breaststroke.  Boise State freshman Chelsea Miller was second in 2:14.26.  Both times were NCAA provisional marks.  Northern Arizona's Jaclyn Branning out-touched her teammate Jordan Burnes for third place (2:18.05).

Boise State freshman Rachel Heaney won the title in the 200 butterfly in 1:58.59.  Nevada's Gabby Guieb placed second for the second straight year with a time of 2:00.42.  Boise State's Christine Raininger, last year's champion, was third with a time of 2:01.20.

Stephanie De Lima of Hawai'i won the platform diving for the second straight year and third time in four seasons with a score of 234.60.  Nevada took the next three spots as Grace Huang was second (219.60), Heather Ramirez third (213.15) and Stephanie Hansen fourth (209.10).

Boise State topped off the competition by winning the 400 free relay in a pool and meet record time of 3:18.25 with the team of North, Stevie Hughey, Kelsy Diener and Boucher.  Hawaii took the silver (3:21.02) and San Jose State won the bronze in 3:22.29.

Friday Results
Boise State had another strong day to remain in the lead at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships being held at the Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. The Broncos are looking to repeat as WAC champions with one more day of competition remaining.

In Friday's finals, New Mexico State freshman Tricia Kiss won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.62. Christine Raininger of Boise State earned the silver medal with a time of 4:16.75. Both times were NCAA "B" cuts. Boise State's Chelsea Miller was third, clocking a time of 4:21.71.

Boise State's Amber Boucher repeated as WAC champion in the 100 butterfly in an NCAA provisional time of 52.05, and also set a new pool record. The race for second was a tight one between three swimmers. Boise State's Stevie Hughey swam a time of 54.64 to edge out New Mexico State's Beth Cate (54.68) and Boise State's Rachel Heaney (54.70).

In the 200 freestyle, Boise State's Stephanie North improved on her second place finish last year with a gold medal after swimming a time of 1:46.96. Nevada's Jiao Jiao Mi was second after posting a time of 1:48.64 while Hawaii's Maura Barrett took the bronze in 1:48.72. All three swam NCAA provisional times.

New Mexico State senior Alannah Lawrence won the 100 breaststroke for the second straight year with an NCAA provisional time of 1:01.35. Hawaii's Taylor Ritenberg was second with a time of 1:01.70 while Boise State's Kelly Forrester garnered third place honors with a time of 1:02.04.

Idaho freshman Shana Lim swam the performance of the night when she broke the 14-year-old WAC record and 12-year-old WAC championship meet record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.00. SMU's Lia Oberstar set the previous WAC record of 53.22 in 1997 and the meet record of 53.38 two years later. Last year's champion, Northern Arizona's Fi Connell was second in a time of 54.23 and Boise State's Denise Green took third in 54.53. All three medalists swam NCAA provisional times.

Hawaii's Emma Friesen won her second straight diving event, this time taking gold on the three-meter board with a score of 344.55. Friesen was also the 2009 champion. Nevada's Grace Huang was second with 309.60 points followed by Northern Arizona's Lanette Christensen (291.95).

In the final event of the evening, Boise State broke both the WAC meet and pool records with a time of 3:37.88 in the 400 medley relay. The defending champion in the event consisted of the same team from last year: Denise Green, Kelly Forrester, Boucher and North. New Mexico State was second (3:42.24), while Hawaii placed third (3:3:43.36).

After three days of competition, Boise State leads with 585 points, while Hawaii is second with 404. Northern Arizona is third with 353 points, followed by San Jose State with 336, New Mexico State (293), Nevada (198), Fresno State (170) and Idaho (146).

Action concludes tomorrow at the Palo Alto College Natatorium with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m., the first three heats of the 1650 free begin at 4:30 p.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday Results
Boise State and Hawaii each won two events on day two of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
The night began with Nevada’s Jiao Jiao Mi repeating as champion in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.16.  San Jose State's Julia Koch was second in a time of 4:51.41 while Boise State's Jennifer Cahill took third in 4:51.96.  All three swimmers earned NCAA provisional times.
 
In the 200 individual medley, Hawaii's Taylor Ritenberg swam an NCAA 'B' cut in 2:00.66 to take the gold medal.  Boise State's Kelsy Diener was second in 2:01.95 while Fi Connell of Northern Arizona earned the bronze with a time of 2:03.05.
 
Boise State swept the top three places in the 50 free.  Last year's champion, Amber Boucher, set a new meet and pool record with a time of 22.30.  Earlier in the day, Boucher had tied the mark with a time of 22.51 in the prelims.  For the second year in a row, Stephanie North was second with a time of 22.75 while Stevie Hughey was third (23.01).  All three swam NCAA provisional times.
 
Hawaii's Emma Friesen won the one-meter diving for the fourth time in five years with a score of 292.20.  Boise State's Ciera Cortney was second with 288.75 points followed by Hawaii's Hannah Bosnick with 274.35 points.  It was the eighth straight year that a diver from Hawaii has won this event.
 
Boise State won the final event of the day swimming a 1:30.63 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, setting a new pool record. The team consisted of Amber Boucher, Stevie Hughey, Kelsy Diener and Stephanie North.  San Jose State was second (1:32.40) just edging out Hawaii (1:32.44).
 
After two days of competition, Boise State leads the meet with 281 points, while Hawaii is in second with 215.  San Jose State is third with 193 points, just ahead of Northern Arizona with 190.  New Mexico State is fifth with 136 followed by Fresno State (102), Nevada (86) and Idaho (79).
 
Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 1-meter diving and 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday Results
The 2011 Western Athletic Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship began today with Boise State winning both the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.

Boise State’s team of Denise Green, Kelly Forrester, Stevie Hughey and Kelsy Diener took first in the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA consideration time of 1:41.36. New Mexico State was second with a time of 1:41.63, also an NCAA “B” cut while San Jose State, Idaho and Hawaii earned provisional times as well.

In the only other race of the day, the Broncos took the gold medal with a win in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Amber Boucher, Jennifer Cahill, Stevie Hughey and Stephanie North won with an NCAA consideration time of 7:12.91.  Hawaii, Northern Arizona and San Jose State finished within two seconds of each other and all recorded NCAA provisional times.

After one day of competition, Boise State is the leader with 80 points.   Hawaii, New Mexico State and San Jose State are all tied for second place with 62 points.  Northern Arizona is in fifth place with 56 points, followed by Fresno State with 52 points. Idaho is in seventh with 30 points followed by Nevada with 22 points.

Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas with the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.

Preview
The 2011 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships get underway in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 23-26. Over the four days, eight teams will compete for the conference championship at Palo Alto College Natatorium. Boise State is the defending champion after beating New Mexico State by nearly 100 points last year.

The championship begins on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. (CT), with both the finals of the 200 medley and 800 free relays.  Prelims will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday while finals will start at 6:30 p.m. each night.

The WAC will be streaming the finals of all four nights.  Viewers can sign up by visiting www.WAC.tv . Viewers that sign up, will be able to watch Wednesday relays for free.  The remaining three nights can be viewed for a subscription of $5.95 per night or a full championship package can be purchased for $9.95.
