DENVER - Fresno State's Breeauna Thompson and Nevada's La Tijera Avery have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 7-13.
Thompson, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif. (Edison HS), won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes as Fresno State hosted Cal Poly last weekend. She took first place in the 200-meters with a time of 24.83 seconds, and clocked a personal-best time of 55.29 in the 400-meters. Her victories earned crucial points to help the Bulldogs win the meet, 100-97.
Avery, a junior from Inglewood, Calif. (Culver City HS), was the top collegiate finisher in the high jump at the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis over the weekend. Avery's mark of five feet, 9.75 inches (1.77 meters) is a personal record and the second-best in school history in the event.
