DENVER –
New Mexico State second baseman Paker Hipp and
Louisiana Tech pitcher Ben Carlisle have been named the Verizon Western
Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for
February 28-March 6.
Hipp, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif. (Cathedral
Catholic HS), helped the Aggies to a 2-2 record last week with wins over Cal
State Northridge and San Francisco. Hipp batted .571 (8-of-14) and struck out
only once in four games during the YMBL/Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas.
Hipp tallied a double, a grand slam and nine RBI to go along with three walks
and two runs scored. Defensively, he came up with 13 assists, seven putouts and
committed only one error. Against Cal State Northridge, Hipp hit a game-winning
single with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory for
the Aggies.
Carlisle, a freshman from Shreveport, La. (C.E. Byrd),
made two appearances for the Bulldogs last week. In 5.0 innings of work,
Carlisle recorded seven strikeouts without giving up a run or a walk against 18
batters faced. He picked up the win against Middle Tennessee State after
entering the game with the score tied 2-2 with two runners and just one out in
the seventh inning. Carlisle used just five pitches to record the final two
outs, ending the scoring threat and picking up a strikeout. In the eighth
inning against MTSU, he retired the side in order, striking out one and using
just six pitches. The win against MTSU was the first of his career.
