DENVER – Hawai’i’s Leo Rosenberg
and Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin
have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 28-March 6. This is the first honor of the season for both.
Rosenberg, a junior from Manhattan, Kansas (Homeschool), finished the week with a 3-1overall record as Hawai’i swept Loyola Marymount and narrowly lost to No. 8 Michigan. At No. 2 singles, he recorded victories against No. 45 Jason Jung of Michigan, 7-6 (4), 7-5, and Loyola Marymount’s Sebastian Bustamante, 6-3, 6-3. Playing in the No. 1 doubles spot, Rosenberg and partner Danilo Casanova aided the Rainbow Warriors’ sweep of LMU, defeating the Lions’ Daniel Simko and Nicholas Bjerke, 8-6, before dropping their lone loss of the week to Michigan’s Jason Jung and Shaun Bernstein.
Jodoin, a freshman from Varennes, Quebec (Ecole Georges High School), went undefeated in both singles and doubles last week, as No. 60 Fresno State defeated BYU and lost to No. 42 UNLV. In No. 1 singles action, she swept the Cougars’ Megan Price and went on to defeat No. 68 Lucia Batta of UNLV, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. Jodoin and partner Bianca Modoc won twice at the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating BYU’s No. 78 team of Callie Craig and Megan Price, 8-5, and UNLV’s top pairing of Nives Pavlovic and Aleksandra Josifoska, 8-6.
