Hello again and for the last time,

The Aggies struggled this weekend in Reno, Nevada, dropping four games to the Wolf Pack.  A mix of inclement weather, a struggle at the plate, below averages pitching, and a pretty good UNR team.... we just couldn't make the cards line up all weekend. We had our moments of the team that swept last weekend, but overall we were not nearly as consistent as we needed to be to win.

Ryan Beck had a pretty good outing in the 7 inning game on Friday, only allowing 4 runs throughout the game, but our hitters couldn't seem to string multiple hits together and manufacture runs. We hit some balls hard all weekend, but either their outfield tracked them down or they were right to a guy. It will be nice to have Parker Hipp back fulltime next weekend. He is a major part of our line-up and without him it showed this weekend.

Our pitching staff had an off weekend it seemed.  Not that we pitched poorly, but it seemed like everything we threw they hit a seeing-eye ground ball or a ball in the gap.  No disrespect to UNR, they are a good team with a lot of talent. But, I personally feel we are better than we showed this weekend.

The upcoming week is our bye week, so it will be nice to walk away from conference play for a while and regroup before we get Sacramento State at home for a four game series. We will rebuild this week and be ready to finish out the season the best way we know how.

Good luck to everyone the rest of the way, and see you in Mesa, AZ.

Best Regards,

Scott Coffman

Hello everyone,

The second week of conference play is over. We moved to 5-3 in WAC play this weekend, beating a tough San Jose team 3 out 4 games. We won the Friday night game, which was huge and the first game of the double header on Saturday. We lost the second game on Saturday; San Jose's starter had a really good outing and we couldn't figure out how to get to him soon enough. We did put up a late fight in the 7th inning, scoring three, but it wasn't enough. We won the Sunday game, after a rocky start. We were trailing into the 4th inning and we managed to put up some big time numbers. That game finished in a run rule after seven innings.

Looking back on the weekend we played pretty well for the most part. Without our starting second baseman, Parker Hipp, we were forced to make some changes, which we ajusted to, and managed to come away with three W's. Tyler Forney really had a great weekend, and was named WAC hitter of the week! Ryan Beck had another really good performance on Friday night, and it was nice to see Dan Ried back on the mound after two straight weekends of getting hit by comebackers. Although it happened a third time this weekend, he got enough glove on it to slow it down.

We head to Reno, Nevada this weekend to take on the Wolf Pack. Last year, we went 2-1-1 with Reno, and the tie could have meant a higher seed in the tournament. It should be four really good games this weekend.

Hope everyone is healthy and if not, then a speedy recovery.

Thanks again, and Go Aggies!!

Hello again,

The NMSU baseball team wrapped up a four game series in Ruston, Louisiana today, splitting the series 2 to 2 with the Bulldogs.  We played well for the most part, but dropped the ball in the last game. Unfortunately our offense went cold, but their pitcher did have a pretty good game on the bump.

We won the Friday night opener 4 to 2 and the second game of the double header 7 to 5. We lost the first game of the double header 7 to 0 and the Sunday game 10 to 0.  Ryan Beck had an outstanding performance on Friday, pitching 8 innings, his longest appearance of the season.

The second game of the double header was a tough win for us. Our starter struggled in the first, giving up four runs, but sophomore Randy Montoya, who had several key appearances throughout the weekend, came into the game and stopped the bleeding. We fought back, behind Tyler Mack who kept the game in hand, and us the lead going into the ninth inning, as we held on to win.

Even though we struggled scoring runs in the final game, and our starting pitcher suffered an injury and had to come out of the game early, we left feeling pretty good about the weekend. It is key to at least win two games when on the road in conference. Louisiana is a tough place to play at, and the Bulldogs have a good team this year, I expect them to be in the top four heading into the tournament in May.

Next weekend we play San Jose State in Las Cruces. San Jose, historically, has been pretty good. They have always been sound defensively and can swing the bat a little. We are looking forward to playing at home and it should be an exciting weekend of baseball. Good luck to everyone as we head into week two of conference play.

Go Aggies!!!

Hello, this is Scott Coffman, relief pitcher for the New Mexico State Aggies baseball team. As of right now the team is 22-6 with only one home loss. We recently finished up a four game series with the Northern Colorado Bears, winning 3 out 4 games. We head into WAC play this next weekend with an away series at Louisiana Tech. The team is very confident, and ready to start the part of the season that matters the most.

So far we have been playing well, but there is always room for improvement. We feel that if we clean up the defense some and start pitching smarter we can certainly make a run at the WAC championship. For the most part everyone is healthy. We have a couple key players down at the moment, but by Thursday we should be back to full strength.

Parker Hipp, starting second baseman, is having a great year thus far batting .424 and Tanner Wait has really opened some eyes hitting .486. Dan Reid, one of our five starting pitchers, is off to a good start boasting a 5-0 record and a 2.59 ERA. These key guys among others will need to continue what they have done heading into conference for us to continue to be successful.

Again, everyone is ready and anxious for the upcoming weekend series. Us and Louisiana have had some great baseball games the past few years and it would not surprise me if this weekend was no different. So stay tuned in for some awesome upcoming WAC baseball over the next month and half. It's a whole new season starting Friday, and marks the start of who ends up in Mesa, AZ for the WAC tournament in May.

Thank you for reading the blog and see you next week! Go Aggies!
