SJSU Wins Third Straight Club Glove WAC Women's Golf Championship

MESA, ARIZ. -- San Jose State defeated New Mexico State by two strokes on Sunday to win the Club Glove WAC Women's Golf Championship at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.  The Spartans won their third consecutive title and fifth as a member of the WAC by posting a three-round total of 884 (+32).

"This was quite a day today," said San Jose State head coach John Dormann.  "We kind of had a nice 12 holes to start the tournament, but winning is never easy.  I'm very proud of this group.  It was very rewarding to see this team come together throughout the year."

Idaho junior Kayla Mortellaro (68-72-72-212) won the individual title after starting today's round in second place.  Mortellaro won by three strokes over round two leader, Madeleine Ziegert (72-67-76-215).  San Jose State's Katrina Delen-Briones (73-78-70-221), New Mexico State's Demi Mak (74-73-74-221) and New Mexico State's Apinporn Swaschuto (73-72-76-221) all tied for third at 8-over par.  Delen-Briones posted the best round of the day with a 1-under 70 on Sunday.

Fresno State's Christine Uhalde posted an even-par 71 on Sunday with seven birdies and seven bogeys. She finished the three rounds with a tournament-best 13 birdies.

In the rest of the team competition, New Mexico State was second (886), Fresno State third (913), Boise State fourth (921), Nevada fifth (922), Idaho sixth (926) and Hawaii seventh (929).  The Bulldogs posted the best round of the day with a 290 to move from seventh place to third for the tournament.

Also announced today were the all-WAC teams and top awards.  Idaho junior Kayla Mortellaro was voted the WAC's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season by the seven head coaches. Freshman of the year honors went to New Mexico State's Demi Mak and Coach of the Year honors went to New Mexico State's Paul Brilliant and Jackie Booth.

Mesa, Ariz. -
Two-time defending champion San Jose State has a one stroke lead over New Mexico State after the second round of the 21st annual Club Glove Western Athletic Conference women's golf championship. The Spartans followed up yesterday's 302 with a 288 on Tuesday at the 6,121-yard, par-71 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.

New Mexico State (305-286--591) had the biggest improvement of the day, shooting two-over par as a team to move up from a tie for third to second.  Nevada (301-312—613) dropped from first to third.

San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert began the day tied for second, but moved into first with an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. Ziegert carded a 4-under par 67 in round two, the best score of the tournament after two rounds.  She is 3-under (72-67—139) for the tournament and has a one stroke lead over Friday’s leader, Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho.  New Mexico State has the next three best golfers in Apinporn Swaschuto (73-72—145, +3), Demi Mak (74-73—147, +5) and Lauren Bowerman-Ritchie (77-71—148, +6).  San Jose State’s Jennifer Brumbaugh is tied for fifth with Bowerman-Ritchie.  New Mexico State’s Ashley Elias was the only other player to shoot under par today after carding a 1-under 70 to move into a tie for ninth.

Hawaii (305-311—616) is in fourth place, while Boise State (310-309—619) and Idaho (314-305—619) are tied for fifth.  Fresno State is seventh (308-315—623).

The three-day tournament concludes on Sunday with final-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.

MESA, Ariz. – Nevada has a slim one-stroke lead over two-time defending champion San Jose State after the first round of the Club Glove Western Athletic Conference women's golf championship. The Wolf Pack shot a total of 301 in the first round at the 6,121-yard, par-71 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.  Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro is the indivdiual leader after posting a three-under par 68 in a round that included four birdies and one bogey.  Nevada has three players in the top eight led by Joyce Chong who carded a one-over par 72 to finish tied for second place with San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert.

In the team competition, San Jose State is in second place at 302, followed by Hawaii and New Mexico State in a tie for third at 305. Fresno State sits in fifth place with 308, Boise State is sixth at 310 and Idaho is seventh with 314.

The three-day tournament continues on Saturday with second-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The 21st annual Western Athletic Conference women's golf championship is April 15-17 at the 6,121-yard, par-71 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. San Jose State is the two-time defending champion after placing three players in the top six last year.  Last year's individual champion, Hali Coppin of Fresno State, is gone, but Hawai‘i's Kaili Britos and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro return after finishing second and third, respectively, last year.  Mortellaro has averaged a WAC-best 71.71 strokes per round and is currently ranked 15th in the nation by Golfstat after winning two individual titles this season.  Nevada's Lauren Hernandez is also a multiple winner this year with two victories while New Mexico State freshman Demi Mak has a tournament victory on the season as well.
