JODOIN NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for April 11-17.
A freshman from Varennes, Quebec, Jodoin went undefeated at No. 1 singles and went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles last week as the Bulldogs picked up two more WAC wins to remain atop the WAC standings. In singles, she posted straight-set victories over Idaho’s Victoria Lozano (6-1, 6-3), San Jose State’s Sabastiani Leon Chao (7-5, 6-2) and Cal Poly’s Alex Lee (6-2, 6-0). In doubles, she and partner Laura Pola picked up a pair of WAC wins before falling to No. 47 Cal Poly’s top duo, 8-5.
Other nominees included: Molly Knox, Idaho; Vivian ten Dolle, Louisiana Tech; Aodhnait Lombard, Nevada; and Brianna Harris, Utah State.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the April 19 ITA team rankings, Fresno State and Boise State are ranked in the top 75, coming in at No. 71 and 72, respectively. Meanwhile, in the individual rankings, Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin is ranked No. 54. There are currently no doubles teams in the WAC ranked in the top 100.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN BOISE
The 2011 WAC Women’s Tennis Tournament will be held April 28-30 in Boise, Idaho.
Top-seeded Boise State earned its first-ever WAC Women’s Tennis Championship last season with a 4-3 win over No. 3-seed Fresno State in the title match. The Broncos’ victory ended the Bulldogs streak of eight straight titles.
