Verizon WAC Women' Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER – Nevada’s Samantha Diaz and Louisiana Tech’s Chelsea Hayes have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 28-April 3.

Diaz, a sophomore from Shingle Springs, Calif. (Ponderosa HS), won the 1,500-meters at the USC Quad Meet in Los Angeles, Calif. last weekend by more than 12 seconds. Her time of 4:28.22 was a lifetime best for the sophomore who led the race from start to finish. Her time currently leads the WAC and stands as the fourth-best in school history.

Hayes, a senior from New Orleans, La. (Butler County CC), set a school and facility record in the long jump Saturday at the Jim Mize Invitational in Ruston, La. with a leap of 20 feet, 11.25 inches (6.38 meters). Her mark currently leads the WAC by nearly ten inches and ranks 2nd in the nation. She broke the previous facility record of 20-5 set by Boise State’s Eleni Kafourou at the 2010 WAC Outdoor Championship.

Other track nominees included: Alexi Morton, Boise State; Shanelle Stephens, Fresno State; Liga Velvere, Idaho; Kim Francis, Louisiana Tech; LaSasha Aldredge, New Mexico State; and Kylie Hirschi, Utah State.
