Patel and Nevada's Joyce Chong have been named the Verizon Western Athletic
Conference Golfers of the Week for March 28-April 3.
Patel, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield
HS), matched his best finish of the year by tying for third place at the OGIO
Santa Barbara Invite, March 28-29. Patel
shot a 3-under par 213 (71-72-70) finishing just one stroke behind the
leaders. He carded 14 birdies over the
three rounds after coming into the tournament leading the nation in birdies
with 114. Patel's finish helped the
Bulldogs place third in the 16-team field, matching their best performance of
the year. It is the fifth time in his
career that Patel has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
Chong, a freshman from Velserbroek,
Netherlands, finished in a tie for second place at the Anteater Invitational
last week after carding a 7-over par 220 (71-79-70). Her even-par 71 in the first round set a new
career-best which she then beat by a stroke in the third round. Chong finished just two strokes behind the
leader and helped Nevada to its best team finish of the year when the Wolf Pack
took second place at the tournament. It
is the first time in her career that Chong has won a WAC golfer of the week or
month award.
